THE Hun HNH wHm .. EFEEIEEEE The world today, weary of its fruitless struggles and strifes seeks a way to lasting peace. The Benedictine way of life is one of peace - pax , and this is the spirit that is instilled into the hearts of the boys at Benedictine. ' Pax - Pacellil In presenting this graphic review of life at Benedictine, we were guided by the hopeful prayer that the world would answer the call for peace from one whose name, Pacelli, is synonymous with peace - His Holiness, Pope Pius XII., the vicar of the Prince of Peace. It was in answer to his kind invitation that the late Rev. Gregory K. Vaniscak, O.S.B., and his confreres, came to Cleveland. The Benedictine motto, Ora et labora, guided him in his youthful days and this same motto is characteristic of his episcopal work. In filial appreciation of his constant friendship and in deep gratitude for his part in founding Benedictine, We, the staff of the 1940 Blue and White dedicate this Annual to his Excellency, the Most Reverend Archbishop Joseph Schrembs, S.T.D., D.D., Bishop of Cleveland. l P l Most Rev. Blaha JOHN BAYDIK -- Senior Class president and Whiting's gift to Benedictine, UJ.B. distinguished himself both on the gridiron and in the classroom. Johnny, No. 1 Kyser fan, is going to college, but not to Kay's school of Musical Knowledge. JOHN KULKA - Like father, like son - this is true of Jackie, who hopes to become a lawyer. An honor student, our vice president will some- day defend the principles of justice. Good luck, Jack! We may need your services. JOSEPH ORAVEC -- Hailing from Sharon, Pa., Joe is the editor of the 1940 Blue and White. His actions speak louder than his words. Cardinal Newman's definition of a gentleman fits our Joe, who is Benedictine's ideal of a scholar, and a gentleman. EMERIC SCHMIDT - Schmitty , Benedictine's scoring punch in football, is a by-word in Bengal sports. Unassuming and modest, he will go far in college football. Lakewood is proud of this All-Catholic football star, so is Benedictine 4U we J. Oravec E. Schmidt V J. Blatnica C. Bujmlk JOSEPH MASAR - The play's the thing, says Joe of Soup to Nuts fame. But we think Joe's ability as a writer is as great as his dramatic talent. With your speaking ability, Joe, you should be a successful business man. BERNARD BLAHA - Our f'Minnie wants to be- come a druggist, so they say. Judging from the way he handles that powerful stuff in the chem lab, Minnie should be a good mixer of drugs. Do you know your latin, Min? JOHN BLATNICA - B1atts is the tallest of the Nativity trio. You can't blame him for shooting the Ferdinand, for he works in a meat market. Tall, not too dark, - handsome? Better ask her. CHARLES BUJNAK - Buns was a package of dynamite on the football line and what an explosion on the basketball court! His classmates will remember him by his famous words on en- tering first period English class, 'The street-car was late. 37 H. Cabala J. Chovanec L. Eidam J. Fristik HENRY CABALA - Besides being famous for its athletes, Lakewood has given us Henry Cabala, Benedictine's Bill Robinson. When the boys feel melancholy, Henry's rendition of Old Man Mose chases away the blues - and also the boys. JOSEPH CHOVANEC - 'Kid Tornado' from Lo- rain, whose fluency in speaking Slovak led to his appointment as honorary president of the Hlinka Club. In addition, Joe is the amateur Sherlock Hol- mes of the boarders. Send all clues to G-man Joe. CLARENCE DEININGER - Clean cut and ge- nial, Clarence is an ideal student. His neat appear- ance has commanded the respect of every one, be he freshman or senior. An orchid to Clarence, whom We nominate as our No-. 1 loyal sports fan. MICHAEL DUDA - Mike, the tall end of the Lorain duet, recently bought himself a second- hand-car. Now Mike can drive the boarders out to see his chicken farm in Lorain. Peep! Peep! C. Deininger M. Duda M. Haburay P. Hudec LEONARD EIDAM - Lennie, Deininger's right hand man, takes his fun in typical boyish fashion. What he lacks in size he makes up in grace on the dance floor and on the roller rink. Will Lennie live up to his reputation at the prom? JOSEPH FRISTIK -- Joe, our student supervisor of the NYA, delights in flossing his Lakewood pals. Having a peculiar sense of humor, Joe should be a hit as a radio gag-man. Fred Allen, look out for your laurels! MICHAEL HABURAY - A twenty-one gun sa- lute to our peace time sergeant, athlete and actor. Spending the summer at Fort Benjamin Harrison has earned him this salute. Just hope we keep out of war, says Mike who enjoys peace time training. PETER HUDEC - When Will Peter reveal the identity of that kid in Lakewood whose fame has spread -outside the Walls of our fourth year religion class? By the way, does Fristik pay Peter to laugh at his gags? Eine J. Kassai A. Kocik M. Lukac J. Massura. JOSEPH KASSAI - Casey at the bat! A blond haired lad with a smile for everyone - that's Kassai from Lakewood. Says he has no ambition - yet! A varsity man in football, Joe is a lover of all sports and a sport to all. ALBERT KOCIK - Al can win an argument even though he takes the wrong side. His gift of gab, along with his ducky choice of clothes combinations, makes Al a popular figure on the campus. EDWARD KOTYUK - Introducing - an honor student and athlete. Together with Palko, this kinky haired lad formed the strongest scoring c-ombination in Bengal cage history. The secret of Eddieis success? - a dead eye and a graceful overhand shot. BERNARD KRAMER - This is station W.B.- H.S., located in the dormitory of the high school, bringing you the music of Guitar Bernie and his merry mountain yodelersf' The prefect walks in and a blackout forces the station to sign off. lure I E. Kotyuk B. Kramer G. Menoes L. Mentel MATTHEW LUKAC - An Eddie Duchin in the making. At 18, Matt is an orchestra leader, com- poser, and arranger. Judging by his performance at the Senior Cotillion, Matt should become the idol of the air-lanes Within a few years. JOSEPH MASSURA - After spending four years With Red , we know Why Chicago is called at windy city. Shifty on the gridiron, Red also gets around on the stage. Hollywood, here comes the actor's actor, and president of the Footlights club. GEORGE MENOES - Georgie's career at Bene- dictine was brief but sensational. The Greeks would have a word for it. They would call him daring, especially on the football field. LEONARD MENTEL - A Scoop! Revealing the indentity of the Benedictine gossip columnist - Leonard Mentel. But don't try to hide your se- crets now, for Lennie already has the inside dope on all Seniors. I l S 6 I L. Nichta J. Okress J. Ozimek W. Palisin LAWRENCE NICHTA - Here he is, boys! Larry, the business manager of the 1940 Blue and White. In class he is an honor student and on the basketball court a smooth dribbler. He wants to become a chemical engineer. Good luck, Larry. JOHN OKRESS -- Johnny, famous for his power- ful physique, was the bulwark of the Bengal foot- ball line. If you have any questions on dance music, orchestras, -or jitterbugs, consult Johnny, our music information bureau. BALTHASAR ORAVEC - Balty has been yell- ing Extra! Extra! on the public square for more than ten years. Why? He wants to start from rock bottom, like Rockefeller. In basketball, Balty prefers to play without a ref. ANTHONY OREHEK - It's true, 'cause Ada- mic sez so, retorts the dynamic promoter of our Senior Cotillion. Tony, when are you going to publish your long awaited best cellar revealing the secret of your success? But remember Tony, no ghost writer. 3 B. Oravec A. Orehek G. Palko E. Panos JOSEPH OZIMEK - Joe smiles. And why shouldn't he? His days of Greek are over. Ozzie is at scholar in the classics and an all-around sportsman on the campus. He says little, but what he says is worth listening to. WILLIAM Bill's snappy handling of the keystone sack help- ed the Bengal-nine to win the division champion- ship last spring. Keep it up, Bill! We'll see you in the big leagues some day. PALISIN - Another Lakewoodite. GEORGE PALKO - Maly has the distinction of being the first Benedictine athlete to attain All-Scholastic, All-Senate basketball honors. George is a high scorer not only in basketball, but also in his studies. EDWARD PANOS - Put your left foot for- ward, then your right in a short slide to your left, says Eddie as he teaches John Kulka the art of dancing. Ed is a slick and handsome fellow whose ambition is to be a professional dancer and instructor. Students, 1e's dance! WIH M. Piunno T. Pluto S. Scaravelli A. Schleimer MICHAEL PIUNNO - Swish! And two more points are chalked up for Mike. His good looks have not spoiled him, for he remains unassuming and modest. Mike is as popular at Benedictine as Benito is in Italy. THOMAS PLUTO -- Tom's pass-snaring in the Parma- game climaxed his football career. By the way, T-om, don't forget to give the Bengals a blow when you become sports editor of the Press. What a slick blue buggy you've got, Tom! JOHNNY PORUBSKY - Oh Sonny, Oh Sonny, how you do shine. In symphony it's Stokowski, on the piano it's Paderewski, and on the accordion it's Porubsky. Johnny also is tops in basketball and in dramatics. Play, Johnny, Play. JOHN SABOL - Munhall's loss, Benedictine's gain. Johnny our faithful bell ringer, still believes it's possible to trisect an angle. As a chess player, we believe John is a better latin scholar. 4U we J. Porubsky J. Sabol L. Slominski J. Soeder SAMUEL SCARAVELLI - Awarded the aca- demy Oscar for his sterling performance in Soup to Nuts. Genial and jovial, Sammy is the find of the year. Rochester Benny, make room for our Scarpoochi. ALBERT SCHLEIMER - Hats off to the cham- pion U. B. Crusader! Efficient and energetic, Al believes that the Catholic press is the strongest weapon against modern evils. Al's training ground was the gridiron where he learned to fight in true Bengal fashion. LEONARD SLOMINSKI - Start the press, here's news! Lennie's mom is the editor of the Cleveland Monitor, so news writing must run in the family. Neat and clean in dress, Len should give Ed Bang keen competition as a sport writer. JAMES SOEDER - To Jim goes the honor of organizing the Catholic High School Exchange Column. A loyal Bengal rooter, Jimmy should start another thing, - coming to English Class on time. WV. Spronz P. Sweeney T. Yurko S. Zak WILLIAM SPRONZ-Bill,who enrolled at Bene- dictine in his senior year, comes from a family of athletes. His pet ambition is to become a coach and gym instructor. Here's wishing you many championships, Bill. PETER SWEENEY - Many a heart goes pitter- patter when Pete's Irish eyes start smiling. An all-around athlete, this lad led his team to the intramural basketball championship. Begorra, it canna' be the green you're wearing, Pete. CHESTER TORBINSKI - Torby's loyalty to his friends is a password among the Seniors. He can toss in a basketball from any angle on the court and whether a winner or a loser, Chet takes it with a smile. PAUL VACEK - Here's proof that good things come in small packages. Paul, who comes from the west side, has a pleasing personality. You don't have to argue to convince Paul, for he will agree with you anyway. C. Torbinski P. Vacek T. Zitnansky M. Flynt THOMAS YURKO - Youngstown, the steel city, sent this lad to us in his senior year. As a future aviator and aeronautical engineer, we hope Tommy will chart his course over Benedictine on his non-stop flights from coast to coast. Happy landing, Tommy. STEPHEN ZAK - Attention please! Do you want anything fixed today? Call up Steve, our Mr, Fixer, a master mechanic who will repair anything repairable, - even broken dates. That's the genius and kind heart in Steve. THOMAS ZITNANSKY - Another member of 1940 Blue and White staff. Quiet and willing to work, Tom has won a host of friends at B.H.S. He's an ace of hearts who will not trump his pals' good cards. MILTON FLYNT - Milt, the boy with the hand- some build, chose our school for many reasons. He claims that his second love is walking. His first? Chemistry, we are sure. Keep your head above the H2-0, Milt! E El 3El ES S THE JUNIORS Q.. Front Row - V. Rogers, F. Madaj, R. Liederbach, A. Bartko, L. Hudlxc, F. Method Granchie, O.S.B., R. Arth, L. Petelin, J. Vavrus, S.
