The year was tilled with memorable things. Among them the reception of our Benedictine rings. The bazaar was held on the motherhouse grounds, On the anniversary of the day America was found. The Autumn Annual was next on our list, And then the play, in which jenny was kissed. The beginning of December brought the start of Adventg The day before vacation the Christams pagent. For the alumnae game, the gym was packed, As our former schoolmates got shellacked. The Junior Dance, our big day, Was a great success in every way. After the Sport Hop we all were blue Because our list of dances was through. We gave .1 banquet forthe seniors in the spring Wlio would no longer hear our school bell ring. On graduation day we all shed a tear, Because our seniors were no longer here. Our junior year was lots of fun But w - ' nt wait til' sengg year has begun. f 4 rx' yn at If Z, I ie it ,M QW! fi fi nd! 61 ' if ff if i Q I , , IL -N j X ,fy 51 ary I y 1 My W J ' Lf,afL:t.' Time in with the whistle, The third quarter of the game has started at last! Tension is high, the fans expect a lot from this promising team. The Room 5 squad looks anxious to begin-so on with the game! As the ball is tossed to the center forward, we wonder how this junior team will play it. This quarter is all-important if they're to Come out victorious in the end. But let's follow the ball, it's moving fast. Press Club dribbles down the Court and passes off to Sodality. From just a group of girls together in a class roomg through praying and studying, laughing and sharing together, we became a group of close friends, Our teachers not only instructed us in our various and often tedious studies but also guided us through the confusion that sometimes goes with being a Green Freshman. Our class was pulled closer and closer together as we began to join in the new activities of the school. Witli the Christmas spirit prevailing throughout the school we truly felt that Benedictine was Ours. Later on in the year we shared a multitude of things, we struggled through the exams, we had fun talking about our first dance, given by the Fathers Club, and routed each other on to victory in those intramnrals which seem so import- ant, Summing up the first year which we have spent at Benedictine it must be said that we have learned a great lesson, a lesson in sharing-the Benedictine Spirit. mu.: Marilyn Yuknus. U Freshman Hamm 13 Freshman year meant a lot to all of us in Room 13g new surroundings, new friends and new teachers. Remember the first day we wore our uniforms, and what a different appearance our class made with all of us dressed alike? Everyone recalls how happy we were the day we won Kappy Kangaroo, we looked upon him with pride and were truly sorry to see him go the next day. Something else which we'll remember is our first pep rally and the basketball games. VC'e soon were able to cheer as loud as anyone. Hours we spent on homework, trying our best to under- stand the fundamentals of subjects which were still new to us, will always be remembered. Miss Gleason, our homeroom teacher. was so helpful and understanding in our early days at B.A. Exams brought pleased smiles on the faces of those exempt and sighs of relief from the others when they were over. No one could forget the fun we had at our Christmas party. Exchanging gifts, and presenting the stocking to Miss Gleason were the highlights of this occasion. Only a few of the things we enjoyed during our fun hlled days at Benedictine are mentioned here. Mistakes were frequent at first but gradually became familiar with our everyday routine. 13 is regarded as unlucky, but to us it is our lucky number, for in this room we enjoyed our wonderful Freshman Year that will never be forgotten. Father jude, of St. Paul's Abbey in Newton led the girls in inspirational and spiritual guidance with the offering of the Holy Mass, prayers, talks, and question and answering sessions. All benefited greatly with his presence and help. Father jude gave many informal lectures. One of the most outstanding was Our Spiritual Life. He gave the comparison of how we had to feed our bodies with food to keep them healthy and, in like manner, we must have spiritual food to keep up a healthy mind and outlook. We must replenish the stores of these foods for bodily and spiritual power as frequently as possible with the Mass and the sacraments. The girls received Father with all that is Benedictine, showing their eagerness to listen and learn and benefit from his knowl- edge, The success of the retreat and the help and guidance gained by the girls dem- onstrates again the true Benedictine Spirit. ig. -M N 1 Father, may we 41,6 you a qneflion? The Benedictine Glee Club. under the direttion of Miss Curette. has been very active this year. Raising their voices to God. they added to the spirituality of Sodality functions. They gave .in es- pecially enjoyable selection of Christmas carols for the holiday pageant. Members of the Glee Club participated in the concertized version of Carmen, together with several other Glee Clubs from the state, at Chatham. New jersey. The Combined Glee Clubs of Benedictine and Saint Benedict's worked together to present selections from Carmen on our stage. To commemorate the birthday of George Wash- ington, the choir was invited to participate in the program at Boxwood Hall, a historical mansion ot' Elizabeth. The selections consisted of both Irish and American songs due to the fact that the program included an account of the part played by the Irish during the American Revolution. The Benedictine spirit is exemplified by the Glee Club by the manner in which they willingly give their time to perfect all their endeavors. A. basketball game. On the court, the team carries through all the points of good sportsmanship in victory and defeat. The spirit to win is, of course, very strong, but the Green and XVhite places the main emphasis on playing tie game well. Traditionally, the basketball season opened with Benedictine Academy, Paterson, who, this year, lost with a score of -15-34. Other victorious games were the Alumnae Game. Lacordaire, 69-55, St. Aloyisuis, 55-42, St. Peters. 34-17. and Marylawn, 62-31. The team met its first defeat on the St. Vincent court with a score of 44-57. Quick- ly recovering from the set-back. they won the second Marylawn game. Much of the glory paid to Benedictinefs team is due to Miss Battaglia for her excellent coaching job, and to Sister Ann Flavian. moderator, for her assistance. Even with excellent court strategies and perfected techniques. it is obvious that the most important ingredient of a successful basketball team is spirit.
