The Mission Unit of Sainte Jeanne D'Arc is the living expression of Youth's charity. Giving of its time and talents, sacrihcing in the little ways, and making its desire the spread of the Catholic faith, Youth at Benedictine shows its love for mankind. The corporal works of mercy form the basic groundwork of the Mission Club . . . with these as a formula, Youth spread its missionary work to the ends of the earth. Baskets of food for the poor on our day of thanks . . . the education of an orphan . . . aid for lepers in Molokai . . . and assistance to persecuted Religious in a far-off land: these were some of the ways that Youth fulfilled the counsel, Love one another as I have loved you. Drives for cancelled stamps and cards, mite boxes that were passed in every class, and above all, the prayers that came from the very soul of Youth, added to the Club's program. Through such activities, Youth has, it is true, given of its material wealth, but the sublime gift of Youth to the poor and godless was the offering of its own self. Long ago, Someone else offered Himself . . . Youth returns the sacrifice. Planning Lenlen Miffirm Pmjevlf C0lll1lflIg mire box money from the Jifferenl vltzuer Tl-IE XCUIEE UP YUUTH ' lf lil!! Y i t . 1 ,ii x , ,fl I 3 l .5 1 i I get cm One of the active organizations of Bene- dictine Academy is its Glee Club. The popu- larity of this club necessitated its being divided into two groups, the Senior and the junior Glee Clubs. The girls work hard and practice constantly, striving for perfec- tion, not only because it is the aim of the Club, but because they enjoy the singing which plays such a great part in Benedictine life. Two concerts are presented annually by the Glee Club. The major production of the fall was United in Song based on the Thanksgiving theme, which brought into view the true spirit of American ideals by paying tribute in song to the various nations which helped to make America the great democracy that she is today. The blended harmony of the Glee Club in the last four songs of this concert: America the Beauti- ful, One World, One God, and The Peace Hymn, expressed the desire of all nations, that is-a world blessed by peace and united under one God. In its second concert which was held in the Spring, the Glee Club presented a for- mal affair, highlighting it with many classi- cal selections. The Spring theme was car- ried through this concert by the formal attire of the girls, appearing in all the hues of the rainbow. It was truly one of the most re- membered and most treasured events of the Spring. The beauty of the Sodality functions throughout the year was enhanced by the music of the Glee Club, the Holy Hours, Sodality Installation and the Masses were added to the schedule of the Glee Club. At the occasions, sacred hymns of love and adoration to jesus Christ and His Blessed Mother brought out the true meaning of Catholic ideals. By far, the most beautiful and awaited event of the year was the May Crowning in the gardens of the Mother House. Here, the voices of the Glee Club swelled with love, praise and honor to the Blessed Mother, our Mother, who protects and guides us always. With no exception, the most endeared and beloved song ever to be sung by the Bene- dictine Academy Glee Club is our Alma Mater. With the praise and love of B.A. on her lips, each girl sings with all her heart and soul, repeating the words which to her have a special meaning, and remembering those moments which she shall treasure forever. All through the year the Glee Club plays an important part in each activity at B.A. For truly, music is as much a part of Bene- dictine as its never-dying Spirit of Youth. B.A.'s Dramatics Club is divided into two divisions: the Senior Dramatics Club is composed of the Seniors and the juniors, and the junior Dramatics Club, the Curtain Callers, is composed of the Sophomores and the Freshmen. The purpose of both clubs is to provide an opportunity to the members for proper training in the fields of dramatic arts. The thrill of opening night, the wonder that Youth felt as the curtain closed on its own productions . . . these were the attain- ments of the Dramatics Club. Opening its Hrst season under the direction of Miss june Dwyer and Sister Maris Stella, the club presented a Drama Festival. Three Schools joined their energies to bring about an eve- ning in which Youth proclaimed, I Be- lieve. This belief was the mighty faith of Catholicism in the Providence of God. The all-encompassing spirit that is Youth next turned to the lighter side. A comedy in three acts, Our Hearts Were Young and Gay, brought to the fore the talents that Youth had not dreamed it possessed. Laugh- ter and tears, the work of willing hands to surmount the obstacles that hampered prog- ress, all combined to bring the spontaneous applause that Youth deserved. Our Hearts Were Young and Gay pointed the way to new goals in the field of drama at Benedictine. Youth strived for perfection-from the simplest adjustment in costuming to the almost hopeless problems with casting and scenery, Youth found a way. Elocution contests, field trips, and a grand and glorious picnic completed the Drama Club's agenda. With unsellish energy and a light heart, Youth had learned to understand itself . . . and the Dramatics Club had achieved its purpose. Former B.A. teams hawe set a stiff precedent for our Varsity to match but the underrated team of 56 has compiled a good record for itself against much improx ed opposition. Getting off to a good start the team won the hrst three straight including an exciting contest at Lacordaire on an extremely slippery court. The girls came from behind in the last three minutes to push ahead and win by five points. Then came that fateful game with St. Aloysius. The Benedictine Academy basket- ball team suffered its first loss after 38 straight regu- lar season wins. They rebounded to t ke St. Peter's at home only to go into jersey City and be defeated by St. Al s again. They snapped back to win a spine tingler from rival Holy Family. Tension was at its peak in this game and it now appears that there is strong rivalry between the two teams. Because of weather the St. Vincent's game was deferred to a later date. The next game - a loss to St. Dominic's of jersey City. Record to date, 5-3 out of thirteen season games. But statistics don't prove too much. It is evident that girls' basketball teams are being emphasized and improved much more than in past years, i 7- Miss Baitaglia, Coachg llclcn McGonegal, Elizabeth Nelson, Co-Captains. l31l SPUHTSM!-XNSHIP THE A- ' -, ii'T:i'iir3:g:L.1 41, 'TV 1 as K5 Q 5 :A -1 V 2. HU ilE HUU fl On the first day of school there was the usual commotion which occurs when three hun- dred girls all get together for the first time in three months. Among those dashing about to get settled were a few whose faces had a look of bewilder- ment and who were walking about as if in a daze. These are the type usually called Fresh- men. It took only about a week and the girls had settled down to the common, everyday, hectic life of high school students, and were passing it off as nothing. There was one class in par- ticular which was a little more lost than the rest, This class just happened to be us, Freshman Class 3M. One of the reasons was that most of us had never set eyes on each other before and believe us, we were scared. Reason number tW0-We were sent to another building, and to a class all by ourselves. We all got used to each other right away, and now have gone to the other extreme and gotten ourselves quite a reputation. just mention 3M and you'll re- ceive an explosive reaction, for we're known to be fjust a littlej . . . restless? In the beginning everything was new, None of us had much Algebra in school, so this was something really new. Latin, too, was another completely dif- ferent subject and proved to be very interesting, with the aid of Anne Mullaney, Tripodi. Noel Urban, Regina Verchot, Maryann Gibson, Carol Kordass, Pat Judith Wright, Elizabeth O'Connor, Carol Yuknes, Audrey De Serio, Kathleen Parker Margaret Sehrier, Suzanne Kovatch, Mary Louise Hanf, Annetta Mincrvino, ,Ioan Vach. NJ Sister Giles. Most of us really went for the new experience of taking electives and having a separate teacher for every class. All the teachers made their class- es interesting by pointing out things we had never realized be- fore. Although on the outside we may seem boisterous, we can also get down to serious busi- ness when the time comes. Few people realize this, and many may be surprised, but it really isn't impossible. There are many things which go on inside our closed classroom that are never mentioned outside. We hope that we haven't been too much of a nuisance and that we won't be soon forgotten. gfeiiklylell 00111 8 HT a i XE we Wlbivji QXKX X ll? N QQLX HQ XE il It seems rather odd to speak of our first day in high school in the past tense. Odd, but inevitable. There we were, from all parts of New jersey for at least so it seemedj all seated in one . . . big . . . empty auditorium. We waited patiently as each name was called and were secretly thrilled and re- lieved as our own name echoed through the hall. Before we knew it, we were being assigned to a classroom. On that first day, there was a restless excitement as each girl sat taking in her new sur- roundings. As we settled down to our new and different routine, this spirit was manifest by our eagerness to please. At last we felt a real part of Benedictine Academy. Judy Chadwick, Patricia Maloney, Sister Giles, Peggy Hess, Joan Romano. People usually wait years and years for memories but we have quite a neat little store of them already. One was the thrilling magazine contest and our fight to the finish race with Room 6 for Benny . Every day the girls would anxiously await the results, hardly being able to sleep the night before, and in the end, when all the subscriptions had been turned in, we were proud to say, We came in second . Like every other class in B. A., basketball is one of our main interests and we are very proud of all our future stars , jackie Whelan, Dot Gross, Barbara Payne, Doris Kinal, Pat Spies and Pat Maloney are the future B.A. Varsity team fwe hopej. W'e put just as much effort into the volley- ball as we did in basketball and one of our Room 8 teams came out on top. Renette Masters is a substitute on the squad and now all the girls wait on game days to find out if she will cheer. Dorothy jean Mattis and Anne Bush are on the twirling squad and were very proud of them. Not only does Room 8 stand out in sports but our girls have other talents. oan Romano writes short stories and Elizabeth Synnot amuses us with her poems. In the elocution contest janet Freund and Renette Masters worked hard against some pretty tough competition. To show our true B-enedictine spirit in the beginning of the year. we gave an initiation party for the Hitsv, bitsyn Fresh- men. It was quite .1 success, and helped to bring the two groups together. Attording to tradition at B, A., all of the girls earnest- ly try to get on the Honor Roll. Even if some don't quite make it, every one knows each girl is putting all her effort behind her work. Our true B-enedictine spirit also shines through in the mission Held. All of the girls have been faithful in keep- ing the mite box filled, and as our special Lenten project, we have undertaken to help the ill-fed. disbanded re- ligious and persetuted priests behind the Iron Curtain. Now for B-abs, the little doll dressed up like a real live B. The next little bee coming Out of the hive-well, ills B-ennyf That darling, fuzzy brown dog was awarded to us for selling more magazines than any other class in the school. Because everyone in the class was helping, we went over 2000. The girl who won the prize for selling the most magazines in the school was Mary ,lane Walsli, who was awarded a portable typewriter for her efforts. Zzzzz-here comes another bee, representing B-asketball. The majority of the girls in Room 6 are very interested in this sport and eagerly participate in intramural games, There are also quite a few girls in our class who seem to be very good Varsity prospects. Our last buzzing bee is the B-est cheering song sub- mitted in the cheer contest, which was entered by a group of Room 6 girls, who wrote a song to the tune of The Thing and were awarded first prize. As the saying goes- facts don't lie , as anyone can see we are truly the B-hive we claim to be and we will always stand behind the big- gest bee of all, and try very hard to be the B-est. ba Dane Krz'-'Sion' Bar l I' Sinia Petrxcll- ra Zlicesl-ri, loan Sm Cirlene olinv X U- l ix .X six , M jean . ygntidson- gina . And as we gaze back over these wonderful days, the enjoyable times, the dark moments which seem to disappear, the smiles, tears, and prayers which have all been such an important part of our lives at B.A., we realize that the deep emotion that we feel can be expressed only in the inspired words of our dearly beloved Alma Mater, which will be treasured in our hearts no matter which path we may choose to take . . . Hail, Benedictine? Hail to Thee! Oh, let our voices raise A song of love and loyalty Forever in thy praise. The happiness which you have giv'n, We shall remember all our days. Benedictine, in our thoughts We'll hold you dear always. God bless our Alma Mater Protect her from untruth- From godlessness or any ill Which may assail her youth.
