In every phase of our lives, we have tried earnestly to show you our devotion during our four years at Benedictine. Now, on the eve of our graduation, we pause to express our gratitude to you for the many favors which our class has obtained through your intercession, and to invoke your blessing upon our futures. All tco fullv, we realize what an impossible task it would be to try to express our indebtedness to you in any material way, for the material can never truly compensate for the spiritual. Therefore, we will endeavor to show our appreciation by consecrating ourselves to your Immaculate Heart and living as true Children of Mary. , As these pages unfold, one by one, we shall present to you the story of our four years at Benedictine, years of joys and sorrows, successes and failures but especially years of love and loyalty to our God, His Mother, and our Alma Mater. SISTER ANNUNCIATA The Class of Nineteen Hundred Fifty-four lovingly dedicates its yearbook to our beloved Sister Annunciata, O.S.B. Her noble example, deep-rooted faith, and ardent, loving devotion to Our Blessed Lady will forever remain a shining star to guide us on our path to Heaven The Proclamation el The Marian Year To jesus Through Mary! Thus is stated the simple and sublime goal of the Marian Year which His Holiness Pope Pius XII declared should be celebrated throughout the Christian world during 1954. The first purpose of this proclamation is to glorify God through an increased devotion to the Blessed Mother. The Marian Year commemorates the centenary of the promulgation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Christians have believed in the Immaculate Conception of the Mother of God ever since the time of Christ, but it was not until 1854 that Pope Pius IX declared it a matter of faith. By the Immaculate Conception is meant that the Blessed Mother, from the very moment of her conception, was free from the stain of sin. Truly did the poet speak when he referred to Our Lady as our tainted nature's solitary boast. Special plenary indulgences may be gained by the faithful on certain appointed feasts of the Blessed Virgin throughout the Marian Year. In order to gain these indulgences, a Catholic must receive the Sacraments, visit a Church dedicated to the Blessed Mother, and pray for the intentions of the Pope. The indulgence may be gained as often as one visits the church and says the prescribed prayers. In addition, a plenary indulgence may be gained, under the usual conditions, on all Saturdays of the year, and every time one takes part in a pilgrimage to a Marian shrine, or assists devoutedly at a function in honor of the Blessed Virgin. The theme of the Marian Year, as announced by the Holy See, is to bring about a rebirth of Christian Life by means of prayer, penance, and the strengthening and spreading of Catholic Action. In the materialistic world of today, the Catholic Church stands as a bulwark protecting her great spiritual treasury, the riches of which can be imparted to others only through the efforts of each and every Catholic. The Holy Father urged that special prayers be said during the year for those blessed sons of the Church who are suffering persecution for justice sake. To those of us who have had the beneht of a truly Catholic education, the observance of the Marian Year has a deep spiritual meaning. Here at Benedictine, we have learned to appreciate the value of prayer and of penance, and the necessity of Christian leadership in a pagan world. The golden opportunities offered to us during this Marian Year should be accepted with grateful hearts, for there is no gift greater than the privilege of gaining a plenary indulgence, nor any devotion sweeter than that offered to Mary in praise of her Divine Son. The day that I looked forward to for four years was so very different from what I had expected, There was a tightening around my heart and tears just behind my eyelids as I realized that all this had come to an end, as good things must. The feeling of accom- plishment was with me, to be sure, but at the moment I did not want to let slip through my fingers those four precious years. Stepping out into a new world frightened me. I did not want to leave the teachers, the girls, the rec room, the lessons, the fun, and all those things that I had grown to love. One cannot give up four happy packed years in a day without a sense of Nancy and Peg Mary and jean Nan and Alice Tina and Mary na 83 Gig... loss, keen and real. Looking back on Freshman year, the first day stands out in my mind like a bright light that will never be extinguished. I did so want to go to Benedictine and here I was. As the year wore on, the impressions made on this first day were emphasized. The teachers were charming and understanding, the girls friendly and nice. The fun at the Christmas party was a new and unforgetable experience, with Santa so generous and everyone so full of the spirit of the season. After the party, I made my first visit to the new Christmas crib on the lawn. Anne and Joan Peg and joy Betty and Jessie O'D and Carol Sue and Betty M531 w Y. L Terry and Joyce Mary Lou and Helen ' The third rung of this delightful ladder is a vivid part of my memories. The thrill of my Class Ring, that I wore with such admiration, was something special, along with the banquet that we juniors gave the Seniors. That was a day! The work that was necessary to raise the money for this venture was quickly forgotten because the banquet was perfect and the Seniors enjoyed it so very much. The year ended in a rosy hue when we formed the guard of honor at Graduation and made me all the more anxious to have my Senior year on its way. This finally came and with it the longawaited Senior Prom. It was a dream come true, beautiful and forever a Loretta and Bobbie .dy as Ginny and Eileen Betty and Maureen wg was l sr 42: L4 Syn GI Wi N we jan and Nan Ann and Sally 1 . of 4, S 5 I5 .. i abt - no ns- : as H5 vw iry Ellen and Ange jan and Nan Jeanne and Betty Ree and Barb delightful memory The big day, our Graduation, came all too quickly and I was walking down the aisle at Saint Catherines. Some of the girls were bravely smiling, others pale but determined not to let their feelings show, while some, like me, just let the tears fall. Tonight's Farewell Dance, a beautiful and gay affair, was a perfect ending. The sadness of Commencement had left us and we carried away with us that feeling of happiness that we had shared on so many memorable occasions at Benedictine. The four years have ended on the same high, happy note with which they began four short, too short, years ago. ,-L-4-..JKNs t Lynn and Joy Gail and Re ...8kF ' 6 v ! I Dearest Blessed Mother: . . . After your Divine Son, you are the center about whom all our activities at Benedictine revolve. Only you, Mary, can know how our success has depended mainly upon your aid. The knowledge of your interest in all our problems, however trivial, gives us the confidence and the incentive needed to overcome every obstacle. The spiritual projects of our Sodalists, the unceasing efforts of our mission workers and debaters to spread the knowledge of Christ-likeness and Mary-likeness to others, the harmony of our Glee Club's hymns of praise, and the lovely poetic tributes paid to you by our BenedicTeen writers are but various means by which our girls show their love for you. There is an outlet for every interestg an opportunity to utilize every God given talent to further thy Son's earthly kingdom. When it came time for our basketball games, our prayers and sacrifices were well rewarded. Our many victories are your shining reply to our petitions. Yes, countless were the times when our success depended upon you. You are our Advocate and our Model. May our works ever remain as a symbol of our devotion . . . As we leave the portals of Benedictine for the last time and face the uncertain future, there are no words adequate to describe our sentiments. There is so much to thank you forg there are so few words to use. The education given to us by the devoted members of the faculty has prepared us for whatever life may holdg but Mary, you are our constant guide. Therefore, we beseech your blessings upon our lives as we come to the parting of ways. i Each one of us has, to be sure, her own special petition on this momentous day. But with all our fervor we join in asking that the radiant light of your smile may illumine the paths of our future, and that one day our entire class may be reunited in the Sacred Heart of jesus and in your own Immaculate Heart. gas i841 tion ln Gratitude The Staff of the 1954 Benedictine wishes to express its sincere apprecia- to all who have contributed to the success of this publication. ln a special manner we thank: Reverend joseph P.
