The bejeweled spectators garbed in their most elegant attire created an at- mosphere of utter splendor. Celebri- ties from every walk of life gath- ered to hear the famous opera Ex Nihilo Nihil Fit by the bril- liant young composer, Mademoiselle Jeanne Gilsenen. Making her debut in the leading role, Nancy Koehler gave a magnificent performance. The supporting cast provided a flawless vocal background for her matchless portrayal. The music swelled the rapturous heights under the direction of the one and only, Anita Mirto. Impressario, Marcia Vogt, spared nothing in the produc- tion of this lavish spectacle which was dramatically and technically perfect. It seems obligatory to rake special notice of the striking sets designed by that talented duo, Pat Keating and Kathleen Ehrer, and the second act ballet beautifully ar- ranged and danced by Prima Bal- lerina, Eileen Collins. The glitter of the Diamond Horseshoe was enhanced by the presence of socialite, Helen Farrell, owner of the Kentucky Derby win- -Page Tifly-eight ner, Grendel. Joan Collins, the fabulous hostess of the Stork Club, and the millionaire orange tycoon, Joan Brogley. Nobel prize winner, Joan Givas, discoverer of an atomic cure for cancer, was hostess to a group of renowned scientists. Chem- ist, Barbara Laskowski, perfecter of embalming fluid, astronomer, Ca- role Magner, discoverer of Planet X, biologist, Noel Roettger, expert on Platyhelminthes, and brain sur- geon, Mary Ann Fresnics were included in the party. Mary Mc- Gonegal, the President of General Motors, in town to fulfill a govern- ment contract was the guest of Gail Obester, owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Arline Spendley, the coun- try's foremost lecturer on United States history, and Mademoiselle Adrienne Howell of the Paris Con- servatoire occupied the adjacent box. Quite a stir was created by the arrival of Lillian Zazzara and Judy Ruelens who recently returned from their initial trip to Mars. They joined African explorer, Helen Con- nollen, and novelist, Katherine Sesselman, who are collaborating on a book concerning Ubangi head- hunters. Cecilia Cosgrove, editor of the Times entertained Joyce Kar- gus, National head of the S.P.C.A. and Jean Healey, celebrated die- tician. Barbara Roesch of the House of Charm was accompanied by her two foremost graduates, cover girl Maureen Cort and fashion model, Mary Moran. The First Lady of the American stage, Elaine Scheuerman, attended the perform- ance with her vocal coach, Theresa Babian, and her manager, Marcia Dreesen. Together with the film in- dustry's number one producer, Jean Stich, and studio publicity manager, Mary Brady, they were seated di- rectly opposite the presidential box. The highlight of the evening was the appearance of the guest of honor, the first woman president of the United States, Helene Cun- ningham. Attired in an original creation by Dolores Jennings which was accented by jewels from Vfood- in of Fifth Avenue and a mink stole from Jernick furs, she received a standing ovation from the crowd. Both the President and her guests, J. Evelyn Malo, head of the F.B.I., Lynn Sweeney, Secretary of the Treasury, and Rosemary McGarry, Senator from New Jersey appeared to enjoy the performance im- mensely. Their applause mingled with the Bravos of the crowd and their presence added the final touch to the grandeur of this fabulous affair. I am anxious to extend to your classmates in Benedictine Academy my best wishes for a hqnpy and constructive senior year. Unfortunately, Governors are requested to contribute to a tremendous number of worthy causes wnich far exceed their personal finances. Nonetheless, because I liked your letter, I'm going to make an exception in the case of your senior class. Your individual initiative and enterprise is typical of the activities that have made the United States a wonderful country. Now I'm going to ask you to suggest to the editor of your year book the following copy: nCongratulations and sincere best wishes to the members of the Class of 1953. Alfred E. By now, you know I am no longer with youq mentally, I will be with you all the year for I miss you all very much, as well as Benedictine itself. No other place has ever brought me so much happiness as BA. has, So please count your blessings while you can. The reason for my letter is to wish you all the best of luck and success in your Senior year and to congratulate the Class Officers and the Year book Staff. I know, no matter who you are, your endeavors will be suc- cessful, How could they help but be with such a wonderful class to work with? . . . School is quite dif- ferent here: I'll take home- like BA. anyday .... Now I can appreciate all the things I took for granted, such as those wonderful rec-room scenes, the companion- ship of the girls whom you know liked you, the under- standing of the faculty and so many other things I often think about. So thanks for all the wonderful memories. I-Iave a good year, enioy every minute of it, and please remember me often for I'll remember you, Kindly give the faculty my best and fondest regards and tell them I miss them. Wish the Iuniors success and happiness for me and tell them I wish I could be there for the coming Banquet. Good luck and God bless you all, always.
