SALUTATORY Parents, teachers, and friends: It is my honor and privilege to welcome you to our graduation exer- cises this evening. It has been one goal in life toward which each of us has been striving. To the faculty whose patience we have often sorely tried but whose kindnesswe sincerely appreciate, Ibring greetings from the class which owes its present position to you We know you rejoice with us over the completion of an arduous though pleasant task Members of the Board of Education we welcome youto this ceremony in which you must feel a personal interest since, without your provision for our education it would not be possible Parents and fr ends we the members of the graduating class, bid you a hearty welcome on th s night which is to ue of vast importance We know that you too, are happy our success, for you have always aided us when we fel red. You gave us always your sympathy and understanding We find it hard to realize that we have at last finished our work here and are ready to take a big step into the future, but we shall endeavor to do our work as well there as we have done it here Although this may be the end of study, as such, for many of us, it is by no means the end of learning We know that the years to come and the great school of experience will add much to our store of knowledge Once more permit me to welcome you as our guests on this our last appearance as Seniors of the Benedict School when next we gather here, we, too, perhaps shall be guests, assembled to wish Godspeed to some other Senior Class, as ambitious and happy as we May you obtain as much satisfaction and delight from being here to night as we have in entertaining you on our last appearance as the Senior Class of 1953 Nadine A Watson VALEDIC TORY Superintendent Davenport, the Reverend Thomas Barton, members of the Board of Education, teachers parents and friends Tonight our salutatorian in welcoming youto this ceremony has also expressed our gratification and thanks to all who have contributed to ward making it possible for us to have reached this point in our lives It is my desire to add a word of thanks and appreciation to our parents teachers, members of the board of education and all others of our schoo community who by their interest and sacrifice make our educational pro gram possible We realize that all of you have an interest in our future, as you step into the future, but before doing so I would like in behalf of the entire class topledge to you that .we will do our u most, as indi viduals, to upho d the honor and traditions of Benedict High School as well as to fulfill your expectation As we leave these halls oflearning, we take with us a priceless possession a gift from you knowledge and understanding To you -who have all had a share in giving us this gift it is fitting that we re turn our thanks and appreciation That is all we can give you now It is our hope thatwewill be able to repay you in some degree through our accomplishments in the future The road into the future holds uncertainty for all of us Some have made plans for their lives, but none of us can be absolutely certain of what the future holds As the affairs of the world grow more and more complex, so the lives of individuals increases in complexity It is important for us to be able to meet the problems that will arise in our future and the education that you have been lnstrmnental in provid ing for us up to this point is the foundation upon which we will build To this foundation we will add an ever increasing structure of useful knowledge in order that we may gain the wisdom needed to enable us to live useful lives and to make worthy contributions to our fellow men As a closing thought this quotation from Proverbs 8: 10,11 seems to be appropriate Receive my instruction and not silver, and knowledge rather than choice gold For wisdom is better than rubiesg and all things that may be desired are not to be compared to it. Norma A Moore 1 1 in ' . L- . 1 have shown an interest in our past. We are now about to make the big E - 1
