It has been one goal in life toward which each of us has been striving. To the faculty whose patience we have often sorely tried but whose kindnesswe sincerely appreciate, Ibring greetings from the class which owes its present position to you We know you rejoice with us over the completion of an arduous though pleasant task Members of the Board of Education we welcome youto this ceremony in which you must feel a personal interest since, without your provision for our education it would not be possible Parents and fr ends we the members of the graduating class, bid you a hearty welcome on th s night which is to ue of vast importance We know that you too, are happy our success, for you have always aided us when we fel red. You gave us always your sympathy and understanding We find it hard to realize that we have at last finished our work here and are ready to take a big step into the future, but we shall endeavor to do our work as well there as we have done it here Although this may be the end of study, as such, for many of us, it is by no means the end of learning We know that the years to come and the great school of experience will add much to our store of knowledge Once more permit me to welcome you as our guests on this our last appearance as Seniors of the Benedict School when next we gather here, we, too, perhaps shall be guests, assembled to wish Godspeed to some other Senior Class, as ambitious and happy as we May you obtain as much satisfaction and delight from being here to night as we have in entertaining you on our last appearance as the Senior Class of 1953 Nadine A Watson VALEDIC TORY Superintendent Davenport, the Reverend Thomas Barton, members of the Board of Education, teachers parents and friends Tonight our salutatorian in welcoming youto this ceremony has also expressed our gratification and thanks to all who have contributed to ward making it possible for us to have reached this point in our lives It is my desire to add a word of thanks and appreciation to our parents teachers, members of the board of education and all others of our schoo community who by their interest and sacrifice make our educational pro gram possible We realize that all of you have an interest in our future, as you step into the future, but before doing so I would like in behalf of the entire class topledge to you that .we will do our u most, as indi viduals, to upho d the honor and traditions of Benedict High School as well as to fulfill your expectation As we leave these halls oflearning, we take with us a priceless possession a gift from you knowledge and understanding To you -who have all had a share in giving us this gift it is fitting that we re turn our thanks and appreciation That is all we can give you now It is our hope thatwewill be able to repay you in some degree through our accomplishments in the future The road into the future holds uncertainty for all of us Some have made plans for their lives, but none of us can be absolutely certain of what the future holds As the affairs of the world grow more and more complex, so the lives of individuals increases in complexity It is important for us to be able to meet the problems that will arise in our future and the education that you have been lnstrmnental in provid ing for us up to this point is the foundation upon which we will build To this foundation we will add an ever increasing structure of useful knowledge in order that we may gain the wisdom needed to enable us to live useful lives and to make worthy contributions to our fellow men As a closing thought this quotation from Proverbs 8: 10,11 seems to be appropriate Receive my instruction and not silver, and knowledge rather than choice gold For wisdom is better than rubiesg and all things that may be desired are not to be compared to it. Norma A Moore 1 1 in ' . L- . 1 have shown an interest in our past. We are now about to make the big E - 1 C ass to A class of thirteen green and witty freshmen, we entered the doors of higher education in l9l+9 With us then were: Cleetis Carlson, Leila Emken, Allen Farley, Lowell Helden, Mary Heser, Nancy Kops, Norma Moore, Eugene Rests, Gordon Taylor, Ellen walkup, Shirley walkup, Nadine watson, and Carolyn Ziemke These thirteen elected Norma Moore as president for the year with Mrs Harriet walker as class sponsor After having scrambled safely through the freshmen year we again found ourselves back at B H S as silly sophomores Norma was again elected president and Miss Thelma Gilmore was our sponsor we entered our third year of high school with high hopes and elected Allen Farley as president and Mrs Hester Timmons as sponsor In the fall of 1952, thesame thirteen, now as dignified seniors entered the building for the last year, with Mr William F Davenport as sponsor, Norma Moore as president, Eugene Reetz as vice president, Carolyn Ziemke as secretary, and Ellen walkup as treasurer As we pass through the final doors of Benedict High School we look down the line and see that the same lucky thirteen are still with us Through our moments ofpleasure and through our moments of discouragement our class has stuck together as we have reached the highest step at Benedict High Sc ool ass Son we, the class of '53 Now as we say good ye, We' l have to part with dear old friend And hope we'll meet again From dear old B H S we'll take our memories Of all the fun we've ha each year, We'll treasure kind and dear There are thirteen in our class, we'll miss the other kids we'll miss the teachers kind and dear, Who've taught us all four years To them we'll pay a tribute, For all the things we've learned, Into the future now we go, So we'll say NGood bye' Carolyn Ziemke and Ellen Walkup Class Colors Blue and Silver Class Flower Yellow Rose Class Motto They conquer who believe they can O I Hls ry Mary Heser and Cleetls Carlson 46 1 3, A - v, n Prollhec It has been rumored around Washington, D C , that the class of '53 Benedict High school has been very prosperous And so, as an interna revenue collector, I have been sent to find out a little about each one's lives It has been twenty years since I have seen my former class mates, so I am very anxious to get started The first stop was made at a farm west afBenedict where I found Cleetis feeding the cattle Cleetis told me that she and her husband were doing very well in the cattle business During my visit with Cleetis, she happened to mention that Leila Emken was living at Peru, Nebraska when I arrived at Peru, I inquired where I could find Leila and was told that Leila was thetown's police woman When I finally found Leila, she told me that she had graduated from Peru State Teachers College and while there found things in a rather lawless state, so she decided she would see to it that Peru had law and order I then traveled to New Orleans to see Allen Farley, who is a s Allen told me he enjoyed being a sailor very much He said it was ailor such a free and independent life Up to date he had a girl in every port On my way up from New Orleans, I had some car trouble, and so I to the nearest farm house to get some help and whom should I find but Helden I can't say that Lowel1's farm looked very prosperous, and said something toLowell about hzhe said he had become just like his walked Lowell when I neigh bors You know ke said, UI never did especially care for work bzck in high school,U so that's why I came here where everybody else was lazy, too when my car was fixed and ready to go, I went to the nearest town where I heard there was going tobea big show that evening I was very surprised to see Mary Heser as Mistress of Ceremonies Naturally, I had to have a word with Mary afterwards Mary told me that after graduating from high school, she had missed giving speeches in front of the assembly and in Modern Problems, so she decided to join this show where she could give a speech whenever she got in the mood for one While talkin: to Mary, we decided to go somewhere to out Since the Lazy Rancho was right acro s the street we decided to eat there When we than our one time class mate, Nancy Kops After eating, we got up to leave and who should walk by but Professor Moore, a'aswe know her, Norma I asked her what had been keeping her busy for the last twenty years and she told nethat she had first graduated from Columbia University and acquired her master's degree After that she had accepted a job teaching school in India She told me she had already got ten rid of the caste system At the present she was home for a vacation The next morning I st1rted for the west coast Uhile glancing through the Los Angeles Times, I stumbled upon th name of Fugene Reetz at the head of a Love Lorn Column when I got to his office I was quite urprised I asked him how he happened torn writing this Love Lorn Column and he told me that he had enjoyed Mary Lane's Column so much he had decided to help people out the way Mary Lane seemed to Fugene told me that he had just seen Gordon Taylor a few days ago Eugene said that he is now a big contractor and at present is building the biggest and best bridge ever built The bridge spans the Amazon River i1Braz1l when I wenr t:Gordon's office, his head man told me that Gordon had become very wealthy I tlfenwent to Denver, Colorado, while shopping one day I saw tk! former Ellen Walkup I asked her what kept her busy? She tol me that sne was now employed in her husband's dentist office I decided to go to hear the revival of the old musical comedy S03 Q Pacific with tte Denver Symphony orchestra accompanying when the orchestra was rendy to play, the conductor came out and who should be the conductor, but Shirley walkup After the orchestra had played the introduction the play began The leading lady soon made her entranc first I didn't recognize her I looked down at my it was Nadine Watson I learned from Nadine that Carolyn Ziemke was now I went to the Metropolitan Opera House where she was The person beside me said that Miss Ziemke had just of Europe e on the stage and at program and saw that a famous opera star at the time singing returned from a tour Besides the Joy of seeing all my old classmates, I know that all of them had found happiness and uccess in life Shirley Walkpp rs O O 1 U ' s . sat down, a rather tall waitress came to wait on us.
