Seniors of 1957 - The time has come that all of you have been looking forward to, Graduation from High School, I wonder how many of you realize the vastness of the world into which you are going, We live in a wonderous and miraculous age, one of which no words are adequate to express. The greatness of it is the endless, ceaseless change which is not just an ordinary one to which we have become accustomed, in recorded history from time immemorial, but a highly accelerated one which leaves one breathless when he pauses to think of lt, We cannot foretell the exactness which the scientific forces will produce tomorrow, but we can be sure of this, that these far-reaching changes are all about us and crowding us in with increasing speed and pressure, What can we do about it? Ithink the answer lies inthe lines of this following poem, OPPORTUNITY, Tlus I beheld or dreamed rt in a dream There spread a cloud of dust along a plain And undemeath the cloud or tn it raged A furious battle and men yelled and swords Shocked upon swords and sluelds A prince s banner Wavered then staggered backward hemmed by foes A craven hung along the battle s edge And thought Had I a sword of keener steel Blunt thingl He snapped and flung it from his hand And lowering crept away and left the field Then ca me the king s son wounded sore bestead And weaponless and saw the broken sword Hilt buried in the dry and trodden sand And ran and snatched it and with battle shout Lifted afresh he hewed his enemy down And saved a great cause that heroic day That blue blade that the king's son bears - but this
