Bjorn made his home in Bend with Dr. and Mrs. Charles B. Hinds and family for the past school year under the American Field Service lntemational Scholarship plan. He fitted in easily with his American school mates and his Hfamilyf' All who lmew him will miss him when he has gone hack to his Norweagian home. Bjorn, who had never played football b6f0r6 coming to the United States not only made the varsity team hut earned his letter playing for the Lava Bears , He was a welcome addition to the track squad, HS he P8I'tiCiPHtCS in tht SPOIT in his own country. Skiing is also an activity in which this athletic student excells and he spent many weekends at Hoodoo Bowl on the Santiam Pass, slciing with his sister Kela and Hhrothern Pete. Bjorn wishes to thank all those who made it possible for him to stay in Bend this year. JEAN -PIERRE SIMMEN Jean Pierre Simmen will not soon he forgotten hy the people of Bend. Everyone who came in contact with this Swiss hoy was charmed hy his friendly smile, and left amazed at his seeminly houndless enthusiasm. John, as he is lmown to his American friends, comes from Solothurn, Switzerland, and lived this past school year with the Dr. Bradford Pease family in Bend. He enrolled as a senior at BSHS, along with his brother Wilson. While attending school here John spent many husy hours working on school activities. His main interest was dramatics, and he tool: part in the student hody play Green Valley besides many one act presentations Everyone who worked with John, or was one of his many friends, will miss his exuberance and vital personality when he is gone. . . Sbe bad a grade average of 1.12, follow- ing close bebind tbe Valeclictorian. Sbe bas bad many extra-curricular activities and bas beld membership in Pep Club, Future Teacbers of America, and Tbespians. Sbe bas sbown ber leadersbip ability by being elected State President ot F.T.A., and vice-president of Pep Club. Sally bas also been very active in music and dramatics, and received tbe Master Musician award in ber junior year. For ber many accomplishments sbe was award- tbe D. A. R. Citizensbip Award and tbe Betty Croclcer Homemalcer of Tomorrow Award. ln tbe fall Sally plans to attend Coty College, wbere sbe will major in education. VALEDICTORIAN Margaret Ann Williamson, valedictorian of class of 1958, leads ber class witb a remarlcable grade average of a perfect 1.00 for ber entire bigli scbool record. lVlargart Ann entered scliool liere twelve years ago at Kenwood Grade Scliool. Beside ber scbotastic acbievements, sbe bas been active in clubs sucb as National Honor Society, l. R. L4 Tbespians, and served as treas- urer for F. T. A., in ber junior year. Sbe bas been a member of Booster Club and last summer was fortunate enougbt to be able to attend Girls, State in Salem. ln tbe tall sbe plans to enter Oregon State College, wbere sbe will major in education. . . TI-IE LONG HOURS OF STUDYING, CLASS of '58 Left to Right: Bill Brennan, Sharon Baker, Sharon Gumpcrt, Riley Allen The 165 memhers of the senior class were husy this year. Soon after school started they were engaged in initiating the sophomores. On Septemher 26 the annual senior picnic was held at Shevlin Parlc. Independent college visitation was held on Octoher 8, and was also senior dress-up day. The state college representatives met with the seniors Novemher 4. For a Christmas project this year the senior class undertook to supply three families with a happy Christmas. The students donated and repaired toys, and clothing, and provided food for Christmas dinner. Events in the spring semester included the senior Banquet on April 8, and Senior Hicli Day April 29. On May 7, the seniors presented their annual assemhly. The last month was climaxed with the Major Awards Assemhly on May 29, and finally Baccalaureate on June I and Commencement on June 7. Class officers for the year were: Bill Brennan, president: Riley Allen vice-presi- dent: Sharon Balcer theasurerg and Sharon Gumpert, secretary. The parlimentary team consisting of Diclc Johnson, Mickey Foley, Earl Turner, Jim Sachtjen, Dale Fox, and Dan Purlcey, placed fourth in the district. Dan Purlcey placed second in the puhlic spealc- ing contest and qualified to enter the sectional public speaking con- test in Pendelton. The story takes place in a valley which produces giant sized vegetaioies and fruit, a cow that gives gallons of enchanted miiic, and a rooster that grew Hup to Eidon's shoulder. P The piot revolves around Eidon Berry who is ahout to iose his iand to the unscrupu- ious Everheei. Eidonis ancestors came hack from the grave to help him out and make him reaiize the importance of the land. This piay stared Steve Hutchinson os Eldon Berry, Saiiy Stearns as Prim Stokes, Mei Huetti as Tinker Smith, Ann Crenshaw as Martha Meurs and Wayne Fox played the part of Tohius J. Everheei. The Bend Lava Bears finished one of their hetter seasons in 1957 hy compiling a record of four wins and five losses. They won their first game lay a score of 55-6 against a larger Madras team. It was over the mountains to encounter their next foe, the Sweet Home Huskies. The Bears came out victors 15-6. The following weekend proved to he a heart-hrealcer, as the Albany Bulldogs defeat- ed the Lava Bears in the last twenty-one seconds with a score of 15-7. After an epidemic of Asiatic flu, which struclc the entire team, the weakened Bruin gridders iost to the Redmond Panthers hy a rousing score of 20-0. Lebanon was Bend's next foe and this game proved to he the turning point in Bend's losing strealc. The inspired Bruins heat the Vvarriors hy a count of 8-0. Although the Lava Bears gave their best offensive show of the season, they couldn't seem to score often enough in their game with the tough Corvallis Spartans. The Bears led in every column hut one: this was the ali important scoring column. The Spartans won 19-6. G After a lot of controversy, the Prineville Cowboys finally decided to forget the earlier forfeit and play the Bend Lava Bears. The highly rated Cowboys were dealt a stun- ning 7-6 defeat hy the small hut determined Lava Bear team. This is a game that will long he remembered. ,f sg, .. R . The Bend Lava Bears enjoyed the most successful season in years by blazing their way to a 14 win, 8 loss record and a trip to the state tournament. Having one of the sliortest teams in Bend History, the Bruin lioopsters depended on speed, accurate shooting, and aggressiveness to cope with their opponents. ln district 8-A-1 subdivision, Bend won their 4 tilts from Redmond and 2 of their encounters Witll Prineville. Tliey had a tough schedule, including Milwaukee, David Douglas, Corvallis, Springfield, Oakridge, Madras and North Bend. Top scorer for time Bears was junior captain, George Hawes, followed closely by Brad Flanary, Dick Harris, Dick Hodge, and Pat Connolly. A new scoring record of 94 points was made in tlle final game with Redmond on tile llome court. Seniors wllo have played tlieir last season for the Lava Bears are Dick Hodge, Dick Harris,Jol1n Simonis, Diclc Lenaburg,VVayne Lucas, and Joel Ylvisalcer. The Bend High School traclc team under the coaching of Don McCauley had a fair season. The team placed fourth in the Cen- tral Qregon Relays following closely behind Corvallis. Although Bend was unahle to put a man in the state meet in Corvallis, the Bend Lava Bears sported a good traclc team com- posed mostly ol sophomores and juniors. Guy Paxton was awarded the Grahlman trophy lor being the outstanding all around traclc member. Wilson Pease was awarded the Hender- shott Pole Vault Award.
