C0 CHI ST FF Acheson, Basketball. l ARSITY FOUTB LL The Battling Bend Lava Bears had a good season, winning six games and losing three. Under the able coaching of Hank Nilsen and Bud Robertson, and using the T formation, Bend placed second in the Big Six League. September 17, Bend defeated Redmond in the traditional opening battle. September 24, Bend rolled back the heavier and more experienced Corvallis Spartans in the first home game. October 1, the Bears moved to the top of the Big Six League in defeating the Axemen in a hard fought game in Eugene.GiIlis and Symons carried the ball for touchdowns. All conversion attempts were blocked. Griffith and Symons shone on offense and Hogland, Gillis, and Robison stood out on defense. October 8, proved to be a sad night for Salem as the Bears blanked the Vikings to tighten their Big Six lead. Gillis packed the ball for two tallies, and Sutton scored on a quarterback sneak. Brown played a great game. October 15, Bend played good ball against the tough Albany eleven, but lost the Big Six lead as they failed to find pay dirt more than once. October 22, the Bears stomped Springfield in a valley fog battle that was hardly discernible from the sidelines. Punts and passes were hard to find, but fumbles were at a minimum. Gillis, Wade, and Stevens scored from the ground for Bend. Gillis kicked an extra point. October 29, the Battling Bears played the best ball game of the season against Medford but would not rack when the chips were down. Bend outplayed the Black Tornado from start to finish but failed to stop Medford's only two comebacks, which cost Bend the game. Gillis punched over for Bend's only touchdown. November 5, Bend trimmed a fighting Prineville squad to the tune of 45 to 12, with the Bears scoring two or more touchdowns in each period of the game. Wade, halfback, scored three times and Gillis, Denning. Brown, and Longballa hit pay soil on running plays. November 11, the fighting Bend club ended the season by dropping a thrilling 14 to 12 decision to the Pelicans in Klamath Falls. Both teams really battled in the sultry heat of the afternoon, but extra point failures proved to be Bend's downfall. LongbaIla's passing was at its best. Longballa scored on a quarterback sneak and later shot a pass to fullback, Gillis, who scored the other touchdown for Bend. On both occasions GiIlis's conversion attempt failed. Sutton excelled as defensive quarterback. Phil Gillis, fullback and defensive end, and Doug Hogland, tackle, were chosen on the state allstar team, which will meet the Portland all stars in the Shrine benefit game scheduled for August. Gillis and Hogland were also picked for the Big Six League first team. Gillis received the Lions Club Defensive trophy and was leading team scorer and high point in Big Six standings. For team scoring Gillis had 68 points. 10 t.d.'s and 8 extra points. Thru the season the Bears piled up a total of 171 points compared to 80 for the opponents. As a summary Bend's Grid club of '48 was a hard hitting, high spirited team that always battled till the final gun sounded. And a good bunch of fellows they are, too. Row 1 P. Cullison, B.
