BASEBALL The 'little Deeonsn of Ben Lxppen not only had a wmnlng baseball l-will l88f Year, but they gave the school its flrst conference champlon ln any sport The NYS fl'0m the hlll top have had great teams m the past, such 1946 s basketball team and 1948 s football team But the regular guys that downed the uniforms of Ben Llppen last year was wlthout a doubt the greatest baseball team that has ever represented the school ln the Blue Ridge Conference Due credit goes to q'u1te a few tlungs whlch made thls great tmm chck. First of all was the Chnstlan mfluence Not Just pray to wm games, but asking the Lord to guide them so they would be a testimony for Hlm Secondly, was the great team splnt that prevailed throughout the season Many tlmes the team went into the last few mnmgs behmd, but stall full of the ole flghtlng spmt, to come out vlctors. Third and fourth are the results of the other two On this team was one of the most amazing features ln hugh school baseball Every man m the lme up could slug the ball. At the end of the season the team average, mcludlng the low hlttlng pitchers, was 360 At the head of the hst of sluggers IS probably one of the greatest hlt ters ever to attend Ben Llppen, Larry Babe Montelth Hrs average for the season was 541 Babe not only had the hlgh t batting average, but he batted ln exactly one half of the runs scored all year Montelth along wlth pltcher Carl Chastam who had a knack for putting the ball where opposing batters have had dxfflculty touchmg gave Ben Llppen the power to stay above every other team nn the conference Prospects for the conung season are very good As we have a new coach and the nucleus of last year s team retummg lt as promised a good season Heading the Inst of retummg lettermen are Larry Montelth Carl Chastam Steve Momsette, Phll Meredith Herman Davxs and Wxllard Bass. Rehef men returning who w11l break unto the lme up this year seems to be Phll Elhott Dick Hollatz and Jlm Cralg Two new boys added to this year's squad are Duck Ziglar and Ball Cathey both are able performers on the diamond Bulldmg a team around three superb mfxelders such as Larry Mon telth Phll Meredlth and Steve Morrlssette Steve was the outstanding cat cher nn the Blue Ridge Conference, and only bemg a Jumor the team next year wlll have the most able backstop ln the league One of the biggest reasons for the Deacons wmnmg season was the middle play of Phll Meredith He sparked the mfxeld all the way The outfield should produce able performers ln Drck Hollatz, Phil Elhot Wxllard Bass. The pltchlng staff has two veterans retumlng Carl Chastain who won nme conference games last year, should be the necessary factor to stop the opposrng batters With Jlm Crang ready with able rehef and a new boy Duck Ziglar who IS only m the 10th grade, but has prospects of bemg an outstandlng player ln seasons to come The team of 1950 leaves nts records for msplratlon to future teams of Ben Llppen hoping they wlll be contenders for conference honors m many seasons to come Nv- 'Wt
