BASKET BALL The 49 50 basketballseason was adefxmte success the I..1tt1e Deacons play1ng a rugged twenty game schedule out of wh1ch they racked up ten wlns agamst ten losses W1th LarryMonte1th Tucker Graham and Clayton Bell returmng from last year s team Coach Falconer had the mak1ngs of a f1ne tearn from the start When Ph11 Meredxth Carl Chastam and joe Sheppard Jo1ned 1n we had a smooth workxng defense and a h1gh scormg offense W1th the loss of joe Sheppard from the team m the second semester carne Bob Squ1re Wflght a former teammate of Plul Mered1th S 1n Upland lndlana The startlng lineup usually cons1sted of Graham and Wrlght at for wards playmaklng Phll Meredlth at center and guards Bell and Mon telth A couple of good rellef men who played plenty of ball were Carl Chasta1n and Steve Morrlsett however Chastaxn was out a good part of the season due to s1ckness The reboundlng rested largely on the shoulders of Bell and Monte1th who had lt down to perfectlon toward the end The season was h1ghl1ghted by wlns over such strong tearns as Blue R1dge Academy Chr1st School Tryon and Brevard The Blue R1dge fame was one whxch the Deacs were anxxous to w1n sxnce they had never defeated the Hllltoppers Bob Wr1ght provlded the Wlnnlng marg1n W1th a long shot rn the wanlng seconds of the game The Deacs also spl1t a ser1es of games w1th the r1va1 Chr1st School for Boys Thxs was the f1rst basketball contest the Deacons had won from the Cvreenles ln the past few seasons Spllttlng games Wlth Tryon and Brevard part1ally took away the stlng of our football defeats recelved at the1r hands The basketballscormg averages were as follows Graham 14 Z Wr1ght 10 7 Meredlth 9 2 Bell 3 5 Montelth 3 5 and Chasta1n 4 4 A word of recogn1t1on should go to Coach Arnold D Scorza s rrudget squad who had an outstandmg season w1nn1ngn1ne games 1n eleven starts Members of th1s team were R1chard Hollatz Dave H1gg1IlS Andy Hansen john Perry Wayne Tanner Gene Thomas and Wxllard Bass as M , A, . . . 1 - 1 1 1 , . . 1 ' 1 ' n U .
