FOOTBALL The 49 Ben Lxppen football aggregatxon faced one of the toughest schedules a Lxttle Deacon squad has opposed 1n any sport The Casemen st1ll showed a very f1ne offensxve machme wh1ch plled up considerable yardage agalnst such Blue Rldge Conference powers as Brevard Mars H111 Sylva Sand H111 and Black Mountaxn However the Ben Lxppen defense could not fmd a comb1nat1on that would clxck Wxth anucleus of sevenletter men returmng mcludmg Guards Clayton Bell Herman Davls Tackle Dan Webster Backs Elmer Shelton Tucker Graham Larry Montexth and End Bob jackson Coach Case had a few veterans to work w1th The newcomers to the squad had l1ttle or no prev lous experxence but developed 1nto good ball players 1n short order End Phll Mered1th turned 1n a br1l11ant performance all year as a great pass rece1v1ng end and Coach Case 15 happy to have hxm another year In the l1ne were Sam Brown and joe G1tl1n who could be depended on to play a steady brand of ball The backf1eld newcomers also showed brllhance Carl Chastaxn faked many al1ne backer out and went for substantlal ga1ns wzth h1s elus1ve broken f1e1d runmng Also Llttle joe Sheppard 5 4 155 pound half back had speed dr1ve and power whlch he put to good use The lnjury of outstandmg all around ball player Co Captaln Larry Montelth proved d1sasterous to the ball club espec1allydefens1vely slnce Montelth was consldered one of the most aggresslve l1ne backers 1n the conference The only game 1n wh1ch he played the whole game was at Swannanoa where the Deacs outclassed the Warr1ors 1n every count Monte1th bulled straxght through the lzne from h1s fullback post shook free and sped 70 yards for one of the Deacs three touchdowns Also P1111 Mere d1th1ntercepted aSwannanoa pass and went 40 yards down the s1del1nes to score Then agam Quarterback Tucker Graham gathered 1n a pass and broke loose for a 45 yard touchdown romp When playxng Mars H111 the Deacs uncovered one of the most br1ll1ant aer1al attacks ever wltnessed by the hometown fans The Graham to Meredlth jackson battery connected for e1ghteen out of twenty exght pass complet1ons and three touchdowns all v1a the aer1al route Coach Caselost Sam Brown andjoe Sheppard for next year By gradua t1on he w1ll lose llnemen joe G1tl1n and Clayton Bell Quarterback Tucker Graham also graduates We wlsh Coach Case and hxs footballers all the luck 1n the world and us grads w1ll be pull1ng all the way for a Conference Champ1onsh1p. . . . . 1 1 1 1 ' 1 . 1 I 1 1 1 1 1 1 . . 1 . . . . . . , H ' 1 1 1 ' - , - 1 1 1 , . 1 1 ' 1 1 11 11 - - - -
