Tuesday Apr1l28 1970 Ltppen ne Page 3 USC APPOINTS GRAHAM AS HEAD COACH The news of Tucker Grahams accepttng the posttton of head football coach at the Untverstty of Southern Caltfornta came more or less as a surprtse to the casual reader of the sports page But to hts former classmates thts was pleasant and expected news Whtle a coach at Occtdental for two years Graham developed a super offense whtch combtned the power of the stngle wtng the trtcktness of the 'T and all the touchdowns needed to roll over opponents Though the 'T Stn gle Wtng combo has been used before none of them has ever been used wtth such powerful success as Graham s 'T W Whtle sttll a sentor at Ben Ltp pen School Tucker Graham show ed remarkable abtltty at handltng the ptgsktn from the quarterback slot and an excellent knowledge of the sport At the end of the football season Graham was chosen by a select group of coaches to parttctpate tn the 3rd annual Opttmtst Bowl Game tn Ashevtlle Though he wctghed only 145 lbs Graham held hts own and was pratsed by all as he led the West to a 26 6 vtctory over the Eastern All Stars by passtng for two touchdowns set ttng up one more and hts general ball handltng and fteld general shtp The followtng year on a full scholarshtp Graham went to N C State where due to an addt ttonal 15 lbs added durtng the summer he made ftrst strtng Freshman and showed such abtl N C S Varstty used the T rather than the Wtng Hts pass tng as tn htgh school was sttll superb and he led State to tts ftrst undefeated season tn 15 years Due to hts prowess on the fteld he made honorable mentton on AP and UP All Amertca The next summer he spent tn hts hometown of Los Angeles work tng out wtth the L A Dons Returntng to State the follow tng fall Graham conttnued hts remarkable play spurrtng the team on to 8 vtctortes and one tte the latter wtth Army And as the All Amertcas were rolled off the press Graham was on the vast matortty of second team ltsttngs Hts Sentor year was the ftnal great star tn hts football crown That year State was faced wtth the toughest opponents ever faced tn the htstory of the school some of whom were U of Mtchtgan Army and Notre Dame Weeks of hard practtce patd off and the opentng game wtth the U of South Caroltna was won wtth case The schedule got rougher as the season progressed but so dtd State and they conttnued thetr wtnntng ways by defeattng all opponents topptng off wtth a 13 0 vtctorv over the I-'tghttng Irtsh tn whtch game 'Tuck passed for one touchdown and handed off for the other It would be need less to say that he was a unam mous chotce for all All Amertcan ftrst teams Upon graduatton he tmmedtate ly stgned a ftve year contract wtth the Chtcago Bears at S25 000 a year and started out by breaktng most records set by the old ttme great Sltngtn Sammy Baugh of the Washtngton Red sktns He conttnued wtth the Bears for seven years and then accepted the head coachtng Job for the Freshman team of hts old! Alma Mater For two years Graham turned out wtnntng teams and then ac cepted the posttton as head coach at Appalachtan State Teachers College tn Boone N C At the texptratton of hts three year con tract at A S T C Graham went ftnto a two year research and study of football tacttcs offenstve and defenstve formatton At the end of thts pertod of study Graham then trted out hts techntque at Occtdental ago I had had Just enough work to keep me faxrly busy The reason for thIs seems to have laIn In the qualxty of medIcal servIce thIs town was famous for There were twentv M D s herwall of them top notch physIcIans surgeons den tIsts and specIalIsts Last October dIsaster In an unexpected fomm struck the medx cal professIon of HevenlIdaze A new suxgeon a young sprout fresh from school hung out On an average of every twenty mmutes a full cas ket was set In a waItIng hearse to be hurrIed away By a new streamlmed process we prepared a body In one and a half hours and usxng four assembly lmes we kept up wlth the doctor As In the days of the forty nIners people were crazed be yond help at the slght of easy money Hundreds of busInesses closed down as bay wmdowed managers bespectacled clerks overall clad Jamtors and even some pretty secretarles dashed out to help reap the profIts of grave dlgglhg wood choppIng casket makmg or as was usually the case wtth the secretanes ar rangmg bouquets Money so blmded these poor IdIots that they could not realIze the source of the awful tragedy People kI11ed themselves worklng a fact whIch only added to the confu S10h Mme was not the only busI ness Kenneth Duggan He was one of the boys Ken was the class entertaIner responsible f good share of the mIschIef orI eInatIng In the SenIor dorm In 1950 He supplemented hIs hxgh school educatIon by a full Then the gym had only the playIng floor and an unfmxshed basement The other buxldmgs were the chapel Huston Hall and Jumor Hall the facult apart ments The only playIng Ield was the athletlc fleld EDWARD TOBWS Th1s 1ssue of L1ppen Llte fea tur1ng as 1t does news of alumn1 of the Class of 50 we thought It appropr1ate to place beSlde the other names of that memorable class another verv fam1l1ar to all of us here now Therefore 1n our bmgraphy sectron th1s t1me we lntroduce to our readers our Headmaster Edward George Toews On December 27 1932 1n UD per Darby Pennsylvan1a Ed ward George made h1s prem1er debut uoon l1fes great stage Born to L1lllan Eva and Gustav Peter Toews Edward was the youngest 1n a fam1ly of SIX Early lh l1fe he leamed that mama s1mply was not go1ng to let h1m have h1s own way-at least not at home team Ed entered school at Aldan Pennsylvama when he was four He progressed quxte stead1lv and 1n June 1947 was graduated from the Aldan Junlor Hugh to enter Upper Darbv H1gh School the followlng fall The summer of 1948 he became lnterested lh Ben L1ppen School through the IH fluence of former Coach Pat Pat terson so the fall of that year found Ed at B L makmg new fr1ends at a new school On Mav 26 1950 Edward was graduated from Ben L1ppen and he left to enter Wheaton 1n Seo tember Wh1le at Wheaton Ed malored lh Chrxstlan Educat1on w1th the VISION of a teacher s desk 1n the back of h1s m1nd A clever student 1n h1s f1eld Ed was graduated from Wheaton w1th honor Ih 1956 Feelmg that he needed further tramrng before takmg up his profess1on he en rolled 1n Penn State College for two years graduate work Upon the completlon of h1s post graduate work Professor Ed ward Toews accepted a pos1t1on as mstructor of Soc1al Sclences at a sen1or hlgh school rn Phrladel ph1a He had kept th1s pos1t1on for three years when he was of fered a place lh Stony Brook School He accepted and remaxn ed there for four years He was well l1ked by the bovs and he leamed to love them l1kew1se But 1n 1966 he felt led to ac cept Ben Lxppens offer to come south and teach at h1s Alma Mater He was welcomed 1nto our mldst as Instmctor of Soclal Sc1ences and Boys Counselor In 1968 he was appointed to the of f1ce of Dean and last year upon the rengnatlon of Mr Baker he was aopolnted to Headmaster As Headmaster Mr Toews has been one of the best l1ked th1s school has ever had A real frxend to us boys he IS always ready to s1t down and have a fr1endly chat or g1ve some sound advlce where 1t IS needed We f1nd mlrrored 1n h1m the depth and beauty of Chnst and h1s l1fe IS a constant testxmony of strong faxth and great power
