Ceramics pupils work with clay to make useful pottery. The art department has brought many honors to Ben Davis. The Maritime Poster Contest in Wash- ington D.C., Ayres Scholastic Con- test, AAA Motor Club Safety Pos- ter, and Poppy Poster competitions are a few of the contests entered by B.D. students. Clarence Porter, sen- ior, won fourth in the nation for his entry in the Maritime Poster Con- test. Linda Meyer, senior, received second in the state and first in the district in the Hallmark Scholastic Contest sponsored by the General Federation of Womenis Clubs. The art department has many new facilities added this year. Ce- ramics is an example of such a new class. Mrs. Strouse, art department head, is very proud of the students' achievements. 23

Miisic needs mei' by improved facilities The Girls' Chorus, a training choir, practice The keys to music, harmony and understanding, are the goals of the music department. Modern facilities have made achievement of these goals easier and more pleasant. The music department, which op- erates as two separate departments is headed hy Mrs. Geraldine Miller, choral director and Mr. Hal Meurer, band director. The choral department consists of two training choirs and two perform- ing choirs. There are also four extra- curricular groups in which pupils have an opportunity to participate. The hand department has three bands in which pupils may play. They are the concert, cadet, and marching bands. There are also two eXtra-cur- ricular hands, the pep hand and the dance band. For the first time the music de- partment offers two academic courses. They are music literature and theory. a number which they will perform at the Spring Concert. Members of the trombone section, Steve Allee, Tom Brown, Joe Garner and Bon Ade, rehearse for a performance during band period. Q

reparation or vocation after cgmaizmfi In the Industrial Arts Department, headed by Mr. james Taylor, and the Home Economics De- partment, headed by Mrs. Mary Hartle, the pu- pils are taught to be better prepared for a voca- tion in industry or as a homemaker. To keep up with modern trends, the entire curriculum of the Industrial Arts Department has been changed. Many new courses have been added, including exploratory building trades, synthetic materials, industrial ceramics, and gen- eral metals, with its foundry providing for the melting of metals. This year girls are included in the industrial arts program. The Home Economics Department has many courses for both boys and girls. New equipment such as dishwashers, electric skillets, mixers, and ultra-modern sewing machines aid pupils in de- veloping skills in cooking and sewing. Tastefully decorating a home on a low budget is the goal of a new home economics course, interior deco- rating. - The interior decorating classes toured the Home Show at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Brenda Cromlich stitches a seam into a garment she is making in her clothing class. A pupil demonstrates the use of a vertical milling machine.
