Miisic needs mei' by improved facilities The Girls' Chorus, a training choir, practice The keys to music, harmony and understanding, are the goals of the music department. Modern facilities have made achievement of these goals easier and more pleasant. The music department, which op- erates as two separate departments is headed hy Mrs. Geraldine Miller, choral director and Mr. Hal Meurer, band director. The choral department consists of two training choirs and two perform- ing choirs. There are also four extra- curricular groups in which pupils have an opportunity to participate. The hand department has three bands in which pupils may play. They are the concert, cadet, and marching bands. There are also two eXtra-cur- ricular hands, the pep hand and the dance band. For the first time the music de- partment offers two academic courses. They are music literature and theory. a number which they will perform at the Spring Concert. Members of the trombone section, Steve Allee, Tom Brown, Joe Garner and Bon Ade, rehearse for a performance during band period. Q

Audio-visual aids are a valuable contribution to a psychology lesson. upils in understanding world of today Mr. Bruce Calc, U.S. History instructor, en- joys a humorous comment by one of his pupils. The Social Studies Department, headed by Miss Olive Carruthers, prepares students to face life in modern society. Required courses include United States history, gov- ernment, and a one-semester elective course. Pupils may choose from any of the follow- ing for electives: economics, psychology, so- ciology, World history, and geography. The Foreign Language Department, head- ed by Mrs. Ina Hyde, provides training in languages supplementary to the required English courses. Students may study French, Latin, Spanish, and a semester of Greek and Latin Derivatives. This department has en- joyed the use of a new language laboratory and increased library facilities.

Ceramics pupils work with clay to make useful pottery. The art department has brought many honors to Ben Davis. The Maritime Poster Contest in Wash- ington D.C., Ayres Scholastic Con- test, AAA Motor Club Safety Pos- ter, and Poppy Poster competitions are a few of the contests entered by B.D. students. Clarence Porter, sen- ior, won fourth in the nation for his entry in the Maritime Poster Con- test. Linda Meyer, senior, received second in the state and first in the district in the Hallmark Scholastic Contest sponsored by the General Federation of Womenis Clubs. The art department has many new facilities added this year. Ce- ramics is an example of such a new class. Mrs. Strouse, art department head, is very proud of the students' achievements. 23
