Third Row: Larry Tackett, Bill Shackelicrd, History Club officers were: Chris Macey, president, Cathy Sheets, secretary, Rodger Carnes, vice-president, and Tim Laughter, treasurer. Trips to Vincennes and the State House high- lighted the activities of the History Club. On the field trip to the State House, members viewed the Senate and house in action and watched a bill being passed. In Vincennes, they went to the George Rogers Clark Memorial, the William Henry Harrison home, the first territorial capital, and the first print shop in Indiana. Before the Vincennes trip, club members presented reports on things to be seen. A Speaker from the League of Women Voters spoke to club members. She demonstrated voting procedures and talked on the rights of voting. Later, the History Club sponsored a registration drive sending out reminders to voters to register in the national election. Before the general elections in November, a mock election was staged, with pupils voting for the candidate of their choice. Sponsored by Mr. Leonard Lowe, the History Club worked to give pupils a better understand- ing of history and governmental functions, David George. Increasing interest in science as a career and leading students to new areas which are not usually studied in class, are two of the goals of Phi Chi Sigma, science club. Under the guidance of Mr. Daryl Miller and Mr. Jack Jester, chemistry, physics, and ad- vanced biology pupils present programs in the various scientific fields that interest them. One ot the highlights of the year was the visit of Grover Cringe, a five-foot boa constrictor. Membership in the club is open to those en- rolled in chemistry, physics, and advanced biology, In addition to presenting programs, the mem- bers annually build a float for the Homecom- ing parade. Members also participate in science fairs and seminars. One of the most popular clubs at Ben Davis, Phi Chi Sigma is also one of the largest aca- demic clubs.

Working hard for long hours during and after school paid off as the Art Club received first place for their Homecoming float. The highlight of the float was cl huge papier mache Giant. Mrs. Elva Strouse, sponsor, assists Art Club members with any proiects they may undertake. The aim of the club is to learn more about great works of art and to promote art ap- preciation. Art Club members draw posters, paint pic- tures, and work in other art fields and enter their work in contests. ln its first year at Ben Davis, the Art Club has proved to be a popular club. To become a member, a student must have had an art course or be currently enrolled in a course. Highlights of the year include talks by pro- fessional artists about their various fields and a field trip to John Herron Art Museum. There they viewed an exhibition of paintings from the Romantic Era.
