pupils with world Because it is becoming increasingly important that people know about the world around them, and about human behavior, social studies courses at Ben Davis emphasize the influence that cul- tures play on everyone's lives. Miss Olive Carruthers, department chairman, and the nine teachers on the social studies staff strive to implant an interest for the social sci- ences among BDHS students, Rather than learning dry facts by rote, pupils find that courses are enlivened by such proiects as investing S5000 for economics, presenting various discussions in U.S. history, and studying environment as a cause for behavior in psychology. A minor in social studies-composed of two semesters of U.S. history, one course in govern- ment, and one elective-is required for gradua- tion. Although many pupils may not realize it until later in life, a better knowledge of the social sciences, is a valuable asset in today's world. Mr. John Shaw, Economics teacher, glances over his notes before class begins. 11' Miss Sandra Brown, U. S. History teacher, seems puzzled over a question brought up by a student in her advanced class. Mr. William Price, teacher of government, asks u question and waits for an answer.

. s . .-.7 Mr. James Garcia explains a Spanish translation to his class. With the world shrinking more and more, for- eign languages are becoming of greater im- portance. Learning to speak, write, and under- stand o foreign language requires long hours of repititious practice and a great deal of effort on the part of the pupils. A strong sense of ac- complishment is the reward for the time spent learning to pronounce difficult words. Languages are of great importance, not only for personal knowledge, but also for communica- tion with different countries and an understand- ing of international affairs. Ben Davis' foreign language department in- cludes Latin, Spanish, and French, Tape re- cordings are used to learn pronounciation, verb coniugations, noun forms, and sentence struc- tures, by French and Spanish pupils, The writings of Caesar and Virgil are studied by second- and third-year Latin pupils. Now, a fourth year in French and a third year in Spanish is offered to make it possible to earn a maior in these languages. Foreign language classes add Linda Smollwood, French student, listens to the comment of another student during a class discussion.
