English courses Mr. Schwegmon helps one of his English Ill students choose the correct word tor o theme. offer wide choice During the 20th century, English has become one of the most important studies in high school. Without the ability to write and speak the English language, our education would un- doubtedly come to a standstill. Ben Davis pupils are made aware of this im- portance in English classes. A Staff of 16 teach- ers, led by Miss Jean Pritchard, department head, instructs the pupils in the ability to read and understand acceptable English in speaking and writing. Developmental Reading is for pupils who wish to increase their reading speed. ln order to work on one of the publications staffs, a course in Journalism is required. Other selective courses are Bible Literature, and, for college-bound se- niors, literature and college composition. English is perhaps the most difficult language to learn, but the most rewarding. Mr. Raitzel's college composition class listens intently as he explains sentence structure.

DEMICS Academics at Ben Davis are designed to serve the needs ofthe individual pupil. Whether he is taking a college preparatory course, industrial ons, commerce, or home economics course, he can graduate well-prepared for his future plans. Academics also play one ofthe most important parts in the pupils' life. Almost holf of a teenager's waking hours are spent at school or going to or from school. These hours provided the script for the WEST SIDE STORY.
