The students here are working with Comptometers. The field of commerce offers many oppor- tunities to Ben Davis students. Eleven faculty members prepare approximately 1300 students for clerical or secretarial jobs. Mrs. Jesse Kirk, head of the Conrurlerce Department, is often asked to recommend past students to people desiring secretaries or other persons in the business field. Throughout the school year students strive to achieve their pins in shorthand and typing. Tests are given and then teachers issue word pins to those who have either typed or taken shorthand in a given length of time. Honor Day an award is glven to commerce majors onthe basis of their scholastic achievements. The following commercial courses are offered at Ben Davis: Bookkeeping I, II, III, Sz IV: Shorthand I, II, III, Sz IVQ Typing I, II, Rt IIIQ General Business I, Kr Il: Selling and Retailing I Sz II: Clerical Practice and Comptometer Operating. Non- com- merclal students may take Senior Typing.

The English department, under the direction of Mrs. Beneda Campbell, has several elective courses which students are able to take. They are: Bible Literature, College Composition and English Literature and Developmental Reading aside from the regular English courses. A student is required to take only five years of English, however, four years of English are valuable. Ted Winings, junior, explains a few pointers on the speech he's making, as Mr. Bobby Hughes, teacher, watches. U I Mrs. Beneda Campbell, Head of the English Department explains the facts about making term papers, Student Librarians, Delores McRee and Royce Wright,offer assistance to Jim Burrin and Kenny Atwell who are hunting for term paper material. Several awards were given to Latin students and Spanish students on Honor Day this year. Mrs. Helen Mercer, head of the Latin Department, presented awards to the outstanding students in Latin. we Afzwkej Amiga anguagw We are living in a rapidly changing world in which the ability to understand and speak foreign languages ls fast becoming a necessity for those countries and peoples who wish to be recognized as world powers. To keep pace with this need, Ben Davis has the goal of expansion in its Foreign Language Department headed by Mrs. Helen Mercer. This year 423 pupils have enrolled in Foreign languages: 240 in Latin I-II, 75 in Caesar, 20 ln C1cero,70 in Spanish I-II, and 18 in Spanish HI-IV. This is an increase of 70 over last year's total. Other purposes of teaching Latin and Spanish are: to aid pupils in understanding our government, to glve pupils the opportunity of learning a modern language, and to let pupils see how people in other countries live. Instructlng the 12 daily language classes are: Miss Rena Rosenberry, teaching Latin I-Hg Mrs. Helen Wampler, Caesarg Mrs. Helen Mercer, Cicero, Mrs. Shirley Lynch, Latin I-Hg and Mr, Jose Davila, Spanish I-II-H1-IV. Each year an award is given to the outstanding student in Spanish. This year's recipient of the award was Shirley Wingler, Senior.
