If the contestants are lucky enough to win at the regional, they travel to the state compe- tition at Indiana University. This year Ben Davis had 15 math entries, 2 Latin entries, and 1 Spanish entry. From these Dale Henderson won a bronze medal in Vergil, Larry Martinan Honorable Mention in vergil. In math, Melvin Scott Jr. won a silver medal in algebra, Robert Rigdon a silver medal in geometry, and Tom Howald received a silver medal inComprehen- sive, Sharon Burrows received a certificate of merit in the Spanish division. State math winners are: STANDING: Larry Henderson, bronze medalg Barbara Hameetman, bronze medalg and Tom Howald, silver. SITTING: Robert Rigdon, silver medal: Mary Ann Spahr, bronze medal and Melvin Scott, silver medal.

Ben Davis seniors hold the band trophies Ben Davis re- ceived this year. . 3 earning awcw A ,v-4, .- . ,.4--' Tim Mongan and Dave Huston demonstrate how they gave Ben Davis honor this year. Tim wonthe state, and Dave was runner-up. gk Q Throughout the school year many students a.nd groups of students receive awards. Among these are the D,A,R, Award, the Betty Crocker Award, the sports awards, and the band awards. Marion Dierdorf was the recipient of the Daughters of the American Revolution Award, which is based on general good citizenship. Also winner of the Betty Crocker Award, Marion was graded best on the basis of a competitive test concerning homemalclng. The band has received many awards this year. Among these were first place in the Riverview Park Tournament of Bands in Chicago competing with 140 other bands, first place in the State Lions Convention at French Lick, and third place at the Indiana State Fair where 90 other bands were competing for top honors. Tim Mongan has earned the reputation of being an exceptionally good high school wrestler by winning first place in the 175 pound weight class in statewide competition. Dave Huston has also gained recognition in the athletic department of Ben Davis by taking second place ln the state meet in the 103 pound weight class.

gi Salutatorian of the 1958 senior class was Elaine Daughtee. Elaine ranked second in the entire senior class and enj oyed many activities during her high school career. She participated in the following activities at Ben Davis: National Honor Society, Thes- plans, National Forensics League, Booster Club, Sunshine Society, Youth for Christ, Latin Club, Junior Classical League, Cadet Choir, Freshman Choir, Marching Band, Bellaires, Chess Club, and Bowling Club. Elaine also held the offices of historian of Mask and Gavel and secretary of Trialge. She is now attending Purdue University on a state scholarship awarded by Purdue and afee admission to the school. t X Hin gfciaofcwfic ac ieuemenlf The Valedictorian of the senior class is chosen strictly on scholastic standing. How- ever, the top student of the 1958 senior class proved that it's not all work and no play. Brenda Dudziak participated in Student Coimcil, National Honor Society, Thespians, National Forensics League, Booster Club, Sunshine Society, Safety Driver's Club, Latin Club, A Cappella Choir, Cadet Choir, Junior Classical League, and Madrigal Singers. She held the following offices as vice-president of the Mask and Gavel and Trialge. During her four years at Ben Davis, she received the following awards: state algebra award, state geometry award, state compre- hensive award, and the Latin award. Brenda is now attending Purdue University on a 552,000 scholarship awarded by U. S. Steel, a special merit scholarship, and a Purdue University alumni fee of admission.
