CIA W8 l9l 8l96Ll 8 Ol QUQVV Cty A8 The mothers and fathers of tomorrow are be- coming better acquainted with the responsibilities, duties, and problems of making a future home through the Home Economics Department of Ben Davis High School. It is apparent that at least 450 students, 67 of which are boys, are making plans for the most important career of their life. Subjects offered include: Home Ec. I and HI where cooking and preserving food is taught: Home Ec. II and IV is concerned with making and mending clothingg Home Ec. V teaches marriage and family living, and Home Ec. VI is child care. Family Living, taught in mixed classes, has been added to the curriculum this year. It is offered to senior boys and junior or senior girls who are not taking Home Ec. V. Miss Harriet J. Wilkinson, department head, says that the purpose of the Home Ec. Department is to better acquaint the pupil in the areas of making a home. Also teaching in this department are: Mrs. Martha Welch, Mrs. Flora Faust, and Mrs. Vivian Summeier. 20 This is a typical Home Ec. I class. Mrs. Martha Welch watches as the girls go about their duties in preparing feeds.

Music is the science and art of the rhythmic combination of tones, vocal or instrumental, em- bracing melody and harmony. The Music Department of Ben Davis spends many hours trying to develop tones that will produce pleasant and finer qualities in musical entertainment. Mr. William Roderick and Mr. Ralph Chandler direct the choral and instrumental groups at Ben Davis six periods each day, The choir is divided into several groups with the A Cappella and Madrigal Choirs as the chief goal that all chorus students hope someday to enter. The band is divided intoanAanda B band. B band is called Cadet Band and is set aside for students who wish to someday be eligible for A band but need more practice. From the A band comes the Marching Giants which performs at many public appearances such as the 500 parade and the welcoming of celebrities. Both groups have done much to bring honor and recognition to Ben Davis High School throughout the state of Indiana. Open wide, says Mr. William Roderick, the head of the A Cappella Choir. Here he is showing the choir how to hold their mouths. Music is in the air! And it was at the first showing of the Spring Festival. Here the Freshman Choir was adding their arrangements to the program.

Mr. Carl Smith, Basic Electricity teacher, supplies Jim Stewart with a part he needs for his project. Ben Davis boys are privileged to take advantage of the fine vocational curriculum offeredto them which includes most of the vocations open to people who do not go on to college. Under the direction of Mr. Dwight Cottingham, vocational studies have become highly popular with the boys at B. D, The new building, the excellent equipment, and the skillful direction given by the teachers has drawn many students into the field and helped them along the road toward finding a 1ife's work. or a, way fo ma, e at gain? One of the most popular classes in the vocational department is welding rods. il-Iowever, you must wear glasses while welding, Sheet Metals where the boys learn to handle cutting torches and and that hinders identification.J
