y preparing or ffm -,......--1 Solving many difficult math problems is one of the daily duties of George Silca, and Larry Henderson wait their turn to present a Mrs. Helen Poince, Geometry teacher, Here she is helping Jo Ann problem that has puzzled them. Green, Mary Ann Spahr, and Barbara Hameetman as Mike Foster, Jack Williams is receivingareward for his hard work in the mathe- matics department from Miss Martin. On honor day many students feel that all the work has been worth the time and effort. An added interest in the mathematics department of Ben Davis High School has been shown this year by the enrollment of approximately 1000 students in the various math classes. Ben Davisites are beginning to realize the im- portance of math in this entering Space Age . It is the opinion of many educational leaders throughout the nation that a good mathematics background is almost imperative to a well-rounded education today. Among the math courses offered at B. D. are the following: general math, shop math, four semesters of algebra, three of geometry, two of trigonometry, and one of college algebra. Ben Davis students have the opportunity of doubling up in the math courses offered in order to take more high school math than is normally offered in the eight semesters. The advantage of this is that these students may have the opportunity of entering into the more advanced math courses when they enter college. One example of this is the new coursethat is being offered at B. D, which is college algebra. This is a one- semester course offered only in the second semester to prepare seniors for college mathematics.

Demonstrating the different effects of electricity and sand in a science class are: Left to Right: Dan Gilmore, Richard Owens, Mr, Walton, Tim Mongan, and Marcia Decker. The leaders of America proclaim to the youth of our coimtry the need for thorough preparation for living in a scientific age. The enrollment of 600 pupils in the Science Department certainly shows a definite interest in this field by some of the students of Ben Davis High School. The four divisions of the Science Department, in which these 600 pupils are distributed are Biology, Botany, Physics, and Chemistry. At the present Physics is the most advanced area of the Science Department. Before taking Physics a student must have had Algebra and Geometry. Ac- cording to Mr. Daryl Miller, Head of the Science Department, a course in advanced science will be of- fered in the near future. This course is available only to a group of selected pupils, andtherefore will become the most advanced area in the department. The enrollment in science classes is expected to increase by a large margin next year. The number of Biology students will double. There will be three large classes of Physics, five large classes of Botany, and four large classes of Chemistry. The increase in the biology classes is due to the fact that only sophomores and a few select freshmen can take Biology. These freshmen must make above average grades and must be interested in continuing his study of science.
