Hin 119654 cfeuealomenf Verbs, participles, poetry, and short stories are just a few of the subjects read and studied by the 1761 pupils in the English department under the direction of Mrs. Brenda Campbell. Courses maybetaken all of the four years of high school, however, only three years are required. There are several elective courses offered if one wishes to continue his study and increase his knowledge of grammar and 1iterature.Suchcourses are:SpeechI, II, III, and IV, which include panel discussions, oral reports, history of drama, play production, and de- batingg Journalism I, which is the study of modern daily newspapers and news writingg and Library Science, which is student help in the Library. Courses offered only to seniors are College Composition and English Literature Qcollege prep coursesj, and Bible Literature. A new course will be offered to Ben Davis stu- dents in the coming year. English Developmental Reading will be offered as another college prepara- tory course for above average students desiring to improve their reading speed. Lzfwineaa lorelocwafion Students Linda Lewis and Sandy Wade are kept on their toes during a test as Mrs. Florence Gaerte checks their technique. The world of business is constantly looking for qualified persons to enter the field. The opportunities are numerous and the demand is great. Ben Davis has a sufficient commerce department to give its stu- dents a basic background for business and prepare them for a secretarial or clerical job. Many of the commerce students receive a job before leaving high school through the department head, Mrs. Jessie Kirk, who recommends various students tobusinesses that call for her assistance in securingasecretary or other person in the field of business. Some take the Civil Service test and receive government jobs if they successfully pass the test. Eleven members of the faculty are teachers inthe commerce department, and approximately 1200 stu- dents are enrolled in the different business courses. The following courses are offered: Bookkeeping I, II, III, Sz IV: Shorthand I, II, III, Ki IV: Typing I, Il, Si III: Selling Ka Retailing I 8: II: General Business IS: II: Clerical Practice: and Comptometer Operating. Senior Typing is also offered as a one semester course to non-commercial seniors. Each year at the annual Honor Day convocation, the commerce department rewards deserving com- merce majors on the basis of their scholastic achieve- ment.
