Boy 2nd In State An outstanding' junior on the Var- sity Wrestling' Squad was the only member to succeed to a final match for State Champion, Tim Monpran was only seconds away from briupgingy the first State Championship in wrestling' to lien llavis. This 165-pound grappler was over- taken by his opponent from Kokomo by a score of 5-4 in the final match of the state championship. Tim led the Kokomo boy all through the match until he was called for stalling' with two seconds reniainingz The other boy was awarded two points, enough to oust Mongan by a score of 5-4. During the regular season 21 op- ponents went down in defeat when they met Tim. Twice he finished with a draw match. Tim remarked I have another year and with only three seniors tyraduating' from our squad, we hope to 'clean up' at the state meet next year. . - ..- ' . Girl Awarded Each year at Ben Davis High School the D.A.R. g-ood citizen award is presented to an outstanding senior girl. This year's recipient of the a- ward was Martha Bicknell. The representative was chosen by the faculty, after which she took numerous tests. The choice is based on citizenship, scholarship, and an understanding of American history. part in our winning the tournament. All four boys were regulars or starters most of the year and all but Richard Russell will graduate this year. In addition to this honor, Larry Pratt won the Outstanding' Football Player Award, and Gene Wise was the winner of the Booster Award For mental attitude and sportsmanship. 5 P nr' ,- Marching Band Places 7th Out of lO2 Waiting: at attention at the State Fair for the sound of the starting gun are: llcff fo righfj majorettes, Marjorie Pettitt, Anita Wills, Jackie White, Judy Morehead, Betty Ray, Dehra Brown, Joyce Harris, and Bonnie Garbes. These xrirls and the rest ofthe Ben Davis Giant Marching Band had three minutes to perform their catchy routine in front of the judges at the annual Indiana State Fair Marching' Band Contest. With flashing instruments and swift high-stepping' feet, the Ben Davis hand marched past the judges and a efrandstand packed with spectators. Evidently they left a favorable impression, for they came home with seventh place honors out of 102 participating hands. Eating Their Cwn Cooking The 21 hard-working cafeteria wo- men of Ben Davis must eat a hurried lunch hefore the pupils hegzin to pour into the building at 10:35 a, m. This year the women have many new facilities to aid them. Some of the new equipment includes three big 4 refrigerators, two walk-in freezers, steam cookers, a garbage disposal, and automatic dishwasher, and a new potato peeler to peel the 12,350 pounds fsix tonsl of potatoes consumed an- nually at Ben Davis. Two invitational trips to Chicago this summer await the hand after a victorious trip to the State Lions Convention at French Lick in June where they placed first, Eligibility for the National Lions competition was among the honors reaped. Numerous practice sessions this summer will prepare the hand and auxiliary groups with a new routine for the many activities coming early in the school year. A new Powermatic Planer is used hy a student in one of our modern shop classes,

Ben Davisites Keep Up With Latest Facls Something New? Intramural programs in school 1,0- day are instituted so that all stu- dents will have a chance to participate in some sport 'just for fun.' This year, under the direction of Coach Kenneth Cox, Ben Davis started an Intramurals prograni for the boys and it was well received. Over 200 boys played basketball games on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday under Mr. t'ox's supervision and coaching. You can always tell - at least on Fridays you can. This is the day that seniors wear their senior cords. Establishing: a tradition, the 1958 seniors decorate their cords with lavish artwork, depicting' cartoon characters or sym- lxols of cluhs. Did you keep up with the latest fashions this year? Ben Davisities did. A fashion that became vcry pop- ular was the crew neck sweater. These sweaters, for boys and girls both, are usually worn over a white shirt, They are warm and comfortable, which makes them practical as well as attractive. Since saddle oxfords are worn hy the majority of teenagers, socks he- came an issue of fashion news. Be- sides the traditional hobby socks, many girls wore colored knee-lemxth socks. The most startling fashion find of the year was the Chemise dress. The sack dresses brought many comments Q mostly pro from the girls and con from the boys. Personal Civics Taught To Frosh Personal Civics is a part of the new guidance course for freshmen in- stituted at Ben Davis this year.
