Students Helped With Reading Ainerica's schools are faced with a serious reading problem. Because our Administrators are aware of this and He's On Our Side Oh! Look how tall! The gigantic figure that awed many audiences is Big Ben, Ben Davis' new mascot. This eight-foot, three-inch fellow is the product of many hours of hard work. He is stuffed with old cur- tains, newspapers, and cushion stuf- fing to give him his muscular phy- siquo . . . Admiring Big Ben's size and strength arc: 1,1-ft to Iiiglzfz Cheerleaders Sandy Allen, Delores Frost, Ann Wechsler, Nancy Parr, and Eileene Taylor. are progressive, Ben Davis now of- fers a program to help our students with their reading difficulties. Mr. Duane Fleener was put in charge of this class, and he was given eight reading machines to enable him to accomplish his goal. That goal is, mainly, to help Ben Davis students to become better readers. The plan is to develop good readers and to in- crease every student's reading speed rather than to remedy particular de- fects. The class is open to students who wish to improve their reading' speed and accuracy and is not just for those who are slow readers. Mr. Fleener, as shown here, works with these teaching devices which work on the principal of covering up a printed page at a prescribed rate of speed. This program has been well received by those who have had the opportun- ity to take the course, P. T. A. Sponsors Fall Festival Booths galore filled the Ben Davis Senior Building, as the annual Fall Festival got under way. This PTA sponsored event took place on Friday, November 15. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of Larry Pratt and Nancy Farr as King and Queen of the Fall Festival. Some of the gaily decorated booths included a candy booth, a flower booth, cider and donut booth, a pop- corn booth, a surprise package booth, and an Autograph Hound Booth. Industrial Arts Taught In B.D. One of the most important parts of our building expansion is the new Industrial Arts building. In addition to being beautiful, the new building now offers Ben Davis students op- portunities in vocational and indus- trial fields that is not to be sur- passed by any school in the state. Department Head Dwight Cotting- ham and his staff are happy and proud to be able to offer our stu- dents a complete vocational educa- tion. Ben Davis students are also grateful for this fine building and thankful to the community for fur- nishing this new educational facility. Observing the progress of a student welder is Instructor Oren Dobney. 7
