,uv 4 Fu HONORS CAME TO US THIS YEAR Ben Davis High School is proud of its case filled with trophies won for out- standing performances by our students. Not all honors brought tangible prizes. Some were purely honorary. We appreciated these people, for good publicity made ours a school whose name we were proud to put on our fob applications, and on our college entrance blanks. Sk' i' 'I' ln a district band contest Paul Ab- bott, playing an alto saxophone solo, and a trumpet trio consisting of Wayne Dell, Jim Smith, and Tom Bauer, won first places. Xl' 1' ik Norita Nachoff, senior, selected by her classmates and teachers for the annual D. A. R. good citizenship award based on leadership, cooperation, scholarship and service, gave Ben Davis a county winner for the first time. 'k 'k it Our varsity basketball team brought us renown by winning the County Basketball Tourney this year. 'k 'k 'k Many contests were open to students in English courses. Dwight Abbott is shown discussing his victory in the I Speak for Democ- racy contest with Barbara Dreyer who won an oratorical contest sponsored by the American Legion. -k 'k 'k National honors came to us in De- cember. A vegetable iudging team, consisting of Dwight Abbott, Ruth Ann Schuh, and George Hadley, won first place in the National Vegetable Grower's competition in New York. Here we see Dwight Cottingham, Ag teacher, showing his happy team the coveted Snyder trophy which remains in our possession a year. 'k 'A' 'k Perhaps other honors came to our school after it was too late to take pictures. For instance, Barbara Dreyer, .loan Karl, and Janet Keister, were chosen to go to l.U. to Girls' State in the summer. Joan Ryan was the alternate. And Mary Ann Moines won a S250 Home Ec Scholarship. But these are a few of the outstand- ing students in Ben Davis during that year we remember-1952-53.
