Then, suddenly we realize that we have reached a summit. Behind us lies a part of our youth, perhaps the most enjoyable part, and of it we have but a host of memories. Before us lies our future, with all its qualms and anxieties, and it is but a hope. These two facts dominate our thoughts at this decisive mo- ment. Our memories are a part of us even as we are a part of them. Hopes and aspirations are the breath of life to youth. Thus we dedicate this 1947 Brochure to our memories of yester- day and our hopes for tomorrow. Wemoriefi of yedferclag .fdncl Our .Moped jar jomorrow 1 M Flv JooLing KMA . . . SENIOR PLAY .......................................,........,..,.........,....,....,.,......... . Ianuary 10, 1947 Seventeen, the memorial book by Booth Tarkington, was brought to life on the Blewett stage by an excellent cast of Seniors. COMMENCEMENT, .......,.....,.............................,....,.......,..,............,... All too soon these years will be but nostalgic memories of our past and cr realization of the future we are facing. No one could have been more co-operative or more generous of time and energy than the lanuary Senior sponsor, Miss Florence McDer- mott. One Hundred i TENNIS TEAM Mr. Parker entered the l946 sea- son with eight returning lettermen from the 1945 championship team and numerous new players. This made the job of picking the team to represent Blewett very difficult. After many school tournaments the following boys were selected to make up the team for l946: Boyce Meyer was picked for number one man, while Bill Welpott, Bill Gatlin, and Iohn Buell were chosen to alter- nate at second singles, third singles, and first doubles. Bill Henry was placed at first doubles, while Iohn Clark and Donald Lamb, Nathan Simon and lim Siemmler, and Guy Frumson and Richard Summers were selected to alternate at second doubles. The team lived up to all pre- season expectations as they walked off with the City Championship and then traveled to Columbia to capture the State Championship. Bill Gatlin, Boyce Meyer, and lohn Buell brought back the honors from the State Meet. lohn and Boyce won the doubles championship and Bill the singles championship. Ever since gymnastics were introduced at Blewett as a means ot physical development, this sport has advanced loy leaps and bounds in popularity. When gymnastics were ac- credited formally as an inter-scholastic sport, the team demonstrated how long hours oi strenuous practice paid dividends. The team was out to win, but, as there are always two teams fighting for victory in every game, one oi them must taste defeat. Although the Blewett Bees had their share of setbacks, the team was very successful considering the stiff com- petition encountered. The seasons record of nine victories and twelve defeats shows a winning percentage of a little less than SQU per cent. ln league play Blewett finished at the top ot the second division, in fifth place, with a record of three victories and four defeats. Most of these games were excitingly close, with the opposing team emerging the victor only after tense moments of struggle in the waning minutes of the game. The Blewetl sharpshooters showed great ability in the Normandy Christ- mas Tournament, as they soundly whipped the defending champion, St. Louis University High School, and previously unbeaten Wellston team by large majorities, only to lose in the semifinals to the best school, third best in the state, in a thrilling contest. Much credit is due the team, for they have done a splendid job of making the name, Bleweit, outstand- ing in the field of basketball. Four ot the members, lim Kile, Bob Baker, Martin Figus, and Gene Hen- son graduated to the Varsity Team. The team's record for the league season was 4-37 with victories in the tirst two and last two games, they placed third in the league. ln the only tournament ot the year Blewett Won the Consolation Championship in the All- City Muny Tournament by winning tive games and losing one game. Mr. Walka, the coach, did much to make this season a creditable one. .xdfA!efic anagerfi An athletic team requires much more prepa- ration than just playing the game. Uniforms must be issued, equipment must be obtained, eligibility records prepared, and transportation arranged. These and many other duties are the responsibilities of the athletic managers and their assistants. Thus, these boys perform an invaluable service for the coaches as well as the entire school. This year the coaches have organized the managers into one group, under the general supervision of the General Man- ager, Iack Karty. One Hundred Ten TRACK TEAM Here you see the track team of 1947. They ran, jumped, and did all the other things which go into a meet. But that isn't all. They acted as the representatives of their school, which is considered an honor by anyone. In 1946, our team had a record which was very notable. In the district meet, University City took both Iunior and Senior Divisions, but Blewett had her representatives in there all the way. ln the Iunior di- vision, Dick Sudmeyer won the halt- mile and Bill Welpott and Bob Ken- nedy tied for third place in the High lump. In the Senior division, lack Dalton tied tor second in the High lump. On Field Day, which all city schools look forward to as the zenith ot racing, Dick Sudmeyer again took the Iunior half-mile, Arthur Kassott tied tor fourth in the Pole Vault, and Bob Kennedy hopped in third in the Iunior Low Hurdles, and leaped over in second place in the High lump. Although Blewett is a small school the Track Team has built up a fine reputation under the sponsorship of Mr. Parker. The fleet of toot.
