afsewrea, ,msg I1 eacher Control vs Self Government was I N thls great country of ours we are trymg the greatest experxment o Qftfq all hlstory Wlthout kmg or ruler or the active ald of an army a L55 l hundred m1ll1on c1t1zens are trymg the experrment of self government of l1v1ng together 1n freedom ln peace and 1n good order Tlns great experlment was commenced a httle over a hundred years ago when the Colon1es separated from thelr mother country and adopted a Federal Con st1tut1on We have been engaged on the foundat1ons of our democratlc re publlc ever s1n e broadenlng and strengthenlng them removmg one after an other rellglous property and educatlonal quahhcatlons to the rlght of suf frage and extendmg the rlght to the negro to the allen and to women We have too been studylng the machmery necessary for popular government trymg to slmplxfy lt and lmprove lt and maklng It workable and comprehen Slble to the humblest of our cltlzens The great functxon of c1t1zensh1p IS 1tS law maklng functlon Law IS the only sovere1gn we recogmze To law alone and not to men we acknowledge ourselves subject But we make the laws under wh1ch we l1ve and then obey those laws That IS what we mean by self government Boys 1n thelr and then they play fa1r by conformmg to those rules On a recent v1s1t to the Junlor Hlgh School I was dellghted to observe what I seemed to recogmze as the spread of the true democratlc sp1r1t 1n the student body of the school The classes were not zn sesslon when I passed through the corrldors and wltnessed many evldences of frrendly mtercourse between teachers and pupxls who walked back and forth 1n anlmated converse When a httle later I entered the Audltorlum my ears were greeted w1th the musical hum of VOICCS and I found teachers s1tt1ng w1th puplls and everybody happy and ln good sp1r1ts VVhen the ssembly was called to order wlthout confuslon and wlthout the loss of a moment perfect quiet and good order prevailed Some one has sald that we all have to learn three thxngs FlfSt to l1ve second to make a l1v1ng thlrd to l1ve together I belleve that the most lmportant of these three IS the last and lt seemed to me that the boys and gxrls of the Junlor Hlgh were learmng thlS great lesson And I can only be IICVC that boys and glrls ln their school l1fe and men and women ln therr 1n dustrlal l1fe must learn the art of self government before we shall all feel as sured that our form of government IS no longer an exper1ment but an as sured success Many of us m this country who have watched the growth of the democratlc splrxt and of democratlc 1nst1tut1ons feel th1s assurance now but the whole world IS looking on whilst we are trylng out our great expert ment the great experiment 1n the art of l1v1ng together ln true fellowshlp under self lmposed laws If the boys and glrls ln all the schools of thls country learn the art of self government rn thelr school l1fe learn to respect and trust each other as eouals 1n all rrghts pertamlng to school lxfe we may rely upon It that they w11l make good cxtlzens and no fears need be enter tamed as to the success of our great exnerlment Percy VVerner 9 6 u Q . - ' ' 1 - , , , y . If we know the number of a book that book later lS found Most students naturally do not know the numbers 1n the1r books Not so wlth thls gurl In response to the usual questxon she lmmedlately opened a httle notebook ave the number and added the remark that she always kept the numbers of her books Thls IS an eycellent xllustratlon of puttlng educatlon to a practlcal use The complexltles of a great school l1ke ours are qulte comparable to the complexrtles that we meet as adults The masterly control of one s self here ought to mean the masterly control of ones self as an adult If we are contmually gettmg 1nto dlfficultles wlth corrldor ofhcers or schoolmates the chances are we need to correct some of our hab1ts or we shall not have when we are grown that masterly control that we admlre ln dlstmgulshed people School nowadays IS only partly the preparatlon of lessons Lessons are necessary because they glve us the foundatlon or balance that we need We know how to do thls or that better because of them We want to thlnk of lessons as one of the tasks and not unpleasant ones of school llfe So to get the most out of umor wh1le we are here we must try rn as many ways as posslble to act efliclently and lntelllgently Unusual oppor tUI'lltlCS are open here to us to use our educatlon rrght now Dont thlnk of educatlon as somethlng we shall use as men and women only What are you domg now to make practxcal use of what you are learnmg now?
