mrwrere mam Wondermgly I turned to my first hour class where I found an aged chrpmunk poundmg wlth an electrxc sledge hammer the first prmcxples of jungle Hrstory mto the he ds of class composed of every ugly ammal that exrsts The seat next to mme generally occupled by a very pretty glrl now contained a boa constrlctor and as I had no wrsh to s1t wlth hrm and no other seats were vacant I remalned standmg trll I heard a sound l1ke a m1ll1on t1n cans crashmg together and as all my classmates were leavlng I decrded It was the bell and left also Never 1n my lrfe shall I forget the slght that met my eyes as I entered the gymnaslum where I was supposed to report for my second perlod An rmmense gorrlla was lnstructmg a class of apes who swung wlth aglllty from rmg to rmg and pole to pole My ears rmg yet when I thrnk of the norse they made chattermg yellmg and screammg at the tops of therr volces There was a young elephant among the puplls who was havmg as hare a tlme as I was keepmg up wlth the swmft commands of Instructor Gorrlla and though I d1d not partlcularly enjoy h1s company we just naturally be came chummy for they say you know that a wxse man loveth h1s own kmd and I guess xt s the same wlth elephants When the thlrd perlod bell rang I thought my mrserles would end but they only garned force for when I reported to math I found frgure twos threes fours slx s rn fact all lmagmable numbers waltzmg around whlle bemg 1nstructed rn arrthmetrc by a huge figure thrrteen who was brandxshmg an enormous club and dlstrrbutmg almost equally large ones among her numerous puplls On seelng me a student or supposed to be student called F1ve Thousand Two Hundred Elghty Feet 1n a Mxle yelled out Here she IS' Here IS that foolrsh human belng who can t and slmply won t drgest us Well show her how rmportant we numbers re I et flrst Hmg at her she has most trouble remembermg me At thrs last statement a serres of dlssentmg volces arose and the numbers shook the1r clubs so threatemngly that I declded home was the safest place for me so I darted out 1nto the corrrdors whrch seemed strangely twlsted lrke a labyrmth of halls doors and starrs The numbers w1th Frve Thousand Two Hundred Erghty Feet at thexr head were pursumg me raprdly my breath was fallmg and Flve Thousand Feet was just brmgmg hrs heavy club down on my head when kmd Provl dence made rt seven o clock and I was suddenly consclous of the fact that my small brother was beatlng me on the head wlth my bedroom shpper and tellmg me to wake up Mary Jane Carrxer 8th Grade 1 1 - ' ' . . max-rant an-lem out of the crrcle Good graclous' I m afrald' There' It s openmg 1ts mouth at me just then sunny wrlggles off the hook and dlsappears between two logs 1n the water and the glrls try for another b1te But the sun comes down and frles the backs of the1r necks and they get three headaches 1n the party and they all get cross and scold at the fish l1ke so many magp1es F1nal1y they get mad all over and throw the poles away hunt up the lunch baskets cllmb up 1nto the woods where they sxt around on the grass and eat so much lt makes them s1ck When they get home they plant envy ln the hearts of all the1r frxends by tellmg them what a splendld tune they had out Hshmg Ida Goorman 9th Grade OVER 105 by Henrxetta Neuman Z, ERTRUDE came home from work one evenmg feelmg 111 or as ,Q I she expressed It rotten Q In the 6I'St place she had a spllttmg headache Oh dear she thought I hope I get better by tomorrow Why Ill be bounced from my Job 1f I m not at work ln a few days However unfortunately Gertrudes w1sh dld not come true She felt so much worse the next day that the famlly became alarmed and declded serlous but advlsed her to lest at home a few days He then asked the glrls l1ttle sister Frleda to wash the thermometer so that he could take Gertrudes temperature What was the good mans surprlse when the temperature read 104' Good heavens he gasped The gxrls deathly s1ck' In splte of the doctor s words Gertrude felt better the next day but to the famzlys astonlshrnent and dlsmay after little Frxeda had washed the thermometer It read 107' But the next day Gertrude felt almost well Mrs Franzel the glrl s mother declded to take the temperature thxs txme After the thermometer was washed Mrs Franzel s eye chanced to fall on the temperature It read 110' The woman was so surprlsed she could scarcely beheve her eyes But there it was ln black and whlte The good lady s eye tralled back to the hydrant where she had washed the thermometer Gott rn Hlmmel' she exclalmed excntedly no wonder It vas washed under der hot water faucet' A Strange Day At Jumor F!!! LURRIED and bre thless I arrlved at school one mornmg Flfteen mlnutes late to find a group of the most 1ndescr1bably horrlble hzar s at the tardy desk I'CCClVlIlg tardy slips from a gaudy zebra who sar castlcally told me on my 'ipphcatlon for a slip that he dxdnt glve sllps to such ugly persons as I was Whlle speaklng the zebra signed a slxp for the very uglle t of the l1zards ll , - ' uh ' f I . Qmzzumrc Emma A CHARLES FIRST LOVE by Ruth Gorman OFTLY and stealthlly Charles Reed crept from h1s house and wxth ILE! many a backward glance made h1s way to h1s nelghbor s door He hved Wlfh h1s old fash1oned aunt and naturally she could not comprehend affalrs of the heart Charles was only ten years old and prevrouslv had pald l1ttle attentlon to members of the female sex However EIRIHC the httle glrl next door somehow semed to be dlfferent from the other glrls She certainly was pretty and her eyes oh well Gosh you know how It IS yourself Charles was strlcken hard and he was 1n great ecstacy because she had walked home w1th h1rn lnstead of Perc1val Slms a noted heart breaker who possessed a most attract1ve pompadour He was on hls way now to sl1p a note under her door and was afrald of be1ng caught by h1s aunt who d1d not belleve rn such foollshness ln ch1ldren What could she know of hls deep passlon thought Charles He sllpped the note under the door and ran If any one had been watch mg he mlght have seen Perc1val sneak up and carry off the note 1n trlumph But oh' the next day at school Well Charlle dldn t get teased or any thmg lxke that but all the boys called out Oh Charlle we know who she IS now you can t fool us any longer When Elame entered the school room all turned and watched her but she d1d not suspect the reason To day was v1s1tors day at school and all the chxldren had p1eces to say When Charles arose everyone saw Elaine watchmg hrm and they also saw Perc1val acc1dentally on purpose trlp h1m Blushlng furlously Charles started to stammer out hrs poem He choked blushed and stopped whxle the rest of the room glggled He just could not remember what came next Aunt Polly s stern eyes were rlveted upon hlm and he saw promlses of future thmgs ln her glance rather dxsagreeable th1ngs thought Charles Once more he started and got confused thought of the poem he had put 1n the note to Elame and Sald Tell me not ln ln mournful number Elame s eyes are green For the soul ns dead that slumbers And they re blue as can be seen Here everyone actually roared as all knew ffrom Percyj what the note had contamed and reallzed that Charles had confused lt w1th hxs rec1tat1on The Psalm of Llfe There IS enough agony 1n the world to spare you the detalls of what Aunt Polly gave Charles when he got home Let lt sufflce to say that the nelgh hors heard screams of pam and Charles d1d not sxt down for a week However the next day Perc1val presented a rosy apple to Elame and she threw lt at hxm w1th the result that Percy had a black eye for days and days Then she walked home wlth Charlle and caused that young man to thmk Oh swltch where IS thy sting? ll ,Q , . , 1 'B A . 7 7 ,ce L, . . . 1 as - ' ' , ' l -' 1 9 t, 1 . - , ' .
