mem When I was a young man back ln them days of that Clvll War tlme a good old plpe was the very thlng And by joe Ned these gol darn fandangled thlngs seegars and slgarets wlll lull a feller Ah go on Dad don t go a tellln me about them days of yourn Don t ye reckon I ll llve long enough to see thls crop put byf' Dad walked off slowly shaklng hlS old whlte head The nerve racklng nolses of horns whlstles popplng of bottles ceased as noon drew near 1-'eople were seated on the rlver bank wlth table cloths stretched on the grass holdlng stacks of pale PICS chunky bread chlcken and stlcky chocolate cake The great event came after lunch The band was to play and the young folks were to dance All the old men women and chlldren crowded near the grandstand and dance floor In one partlcular corner Old Granny Slndey Nettle Case and Aunt Llza sat All of them smoked gray clay PIPES Granny was bllnd Nettle was toothless and LIZB was crlppled up ln the back as she expressed It They were talklng about the dances glven so numerously around the country Yes Sald Granny Slndey them IS the rulnatlon of our church Rev erend Hlcks IS about to glve up hls church on account of them slnful dancers He says One nlght they go to a dance and the very next un they come rlght lnto thls very church and slt before us The slnners' They all nodded thelr heads and agreed danclng was a sln Look Nettle Llza replled There comes Sal Brooklns Howdy Sal How s yer Paw Sal? She s allln agaln She s a mlghty puny un Well they all drawled now aln t that a slght Here comes Old Uncle Llge wlth hls fiddle Nettle sald Hes a gwaln to play for them folks to dance I reckon All the young folks chose thelr partners for the square dance and were clrcled on the rough oak platform Llge started to saw on hls fiddle and called the Wlld Goose Chase The danclng some how seemed to fasclnate the old women and they sat there starlng wlth thelr mouths and eyes wlde open Say Sal I heerd over the phone thother day that LIZZIC Smlth got one of them there new klnds of plnk Chlnee sllk dresses You say she has? Yes Well ye know I trled to get me some of that green Chlnee sllk up town But they was all sold out The clerk sald It was just a Slbht w v everybody was a buyln that sllk Fverybody amakln um a new dress for the plcnack Acommln back from town we stopped to see our ga den on I . - - ' .
