Once There Was cr Class And what a class rt was! It wrll be many years before time halls of B H S stop echomg wrth the accomplishment: of the class of '57 Since our sophomore year, when we were 306 strong, we have proved ourselves capable of ac complrshrng many a seemmgly impossible task We startedour first yearmsenror hrgh by chosmg conscientious class offrcers, headed by Paul Stennes as presrdent, wrth Judy Dale as vrce presrdent, Kay Conway as secretary, and Drck Wrlle as treasurer Came football season and our class felt that we should be represented on the football freld. Some of our class mates showed therr prowess m this sport by helprng to keep the team undefeated for one more year Brll Lawrence, who also lettered nr hrs freshman year, and Doug Bliss were our lettemren Cheermg our not qurte so vrctorrous B squad on the football field were Barbara Johnson, Judy Ambuehl, Rrta Whrtrng, and Jean Healy, our B squad cheerleaders We partrcrpated rn the Fall Festival by chosrng lovely Sally Schroeder as sophomore attendant Through her our class pard homage to the royalty, King Richard and Queen Roslyn Brll Hammargren represented us on the golf team, he was the only sophomore on the team that year Atthe endof an rllustrrorrs year, we, the sometrmes mrsizeated sophomores, showed the other classes we were not to be outdone m any way As a frttmg end to the frrst chapter of our class's story, we put on a successful sprrng party usmg the theme Garden rn the Ram Byourjunror year ournumber had dwmdled down to a mere 271, and we had to relrnqursh our trtle of the largest class rn B.H S Smce we needed good qualrfred leaders to start the year off rrght, we elected Sonny Shoemaker, John Wrolstad, Kay Conway, and Rrta Whiting as officers The juruors practrcally ran away wrth the show when the fall play was staged. Larry Schroth held the lead as Mr Barry m Mr Barry's lEIchmgs He was supported by hrs classmates Burma Glasman, John Wrolstad, and Sonny Shoemaker That year when Fall Festrval trme rolled around agarn, we chose two attendants Jean Jaycox and Brll Law rence who added both maj esty and charm to the ceremony Once agam our guys ran out on the freld to defend the home goals rn football Spurrrng the team on to many vrctones were Brll Lawrence, Jrm Johnson, Joe Suman, Alton Knudson, John Detschman, Paul Stennes, John Wrol stad, Bob Nelson, Carter Batchelder, Drck Gregg, and John Arnle Boosting the moral of both the team and the fans were the squad cheerleaders Jean Healy advanced from e B squad to help the A squad do rts job we Jrm Jolmson, Brll Lawrence, Darrell Miller, Stan Johnson, and Joe Suman, who was one of the reknowned Flamingo Brothers, were our contrrbutrons to the basketball team, wrth Jerry Johnson actrng as their manager Our team won many well deserved honors, and by wmmng both the drstrrct and regional crowns, we were once more on ourwayto the state tournament Once at Wrlhams' Arena our team showed their abrlrty and stamma by wmnmg the title of C0nsolatron Champs We all remmed tired, but we were happy and satrsfred douln the spring John Wrolstad played hrs best on the tennis team, and he qualified for the state tennis meet m bles Brll Hammargren returned that year to play on the wmnmg state cham ronshrp golf team, the frrst team of rts the regional meet that year Intrack Carol Bly and Carter Batchelder were our stars who qualified for the state meet Jrm Patten also qualrfred but drdn't ma.ke the urp The baseball teamhad added potential m rts junior team members Jerry Johnson, Brll Lawrence, and Jrm John son helped the team place second rn the state Further honors were bestowed on members of the junior class rn the Natronal Honor Society mrtratron Thirteen juniors John Nathe, Judy Dale, Cecrlra Wattles, Jrm Zuelow, Don Haaverson, David Nelson, JoanBender, E1ennaDearholt, Paul Stennes, John Wrolstad, Brll Berg, Fred Johnson, and Susan Johnson recerved their mem ership Strll more came as we elected Sonny Shoemaker a:ndGlenna Dearholt to the important posrtrons of president and vrce president smdent councrl, jobs we felt frt diem to a T One more thing we had to do before the close of the school year was to select our representatives for Boys' and Girls' State, Kay Conway and Sonny Shoemaker were omptly chosen for dns purpose To wmd up the school year, our class was expecterllto put on an exceptronally important event the Junior Senror Prom and t We met the requirements, and lbbtrde was everythrng rt had been expected to be, even to the huge sea s ell as band stand and Ene hundreds of arnted frsh swrmmmg through the arr We returned the next year as semors, hoprng we would pr rt from the past years' experiences, and that we would use every minute of dns last year of hrgh school to rts best advantage For the last trme we chose our class executives Elected as presrdent, vrce presrdent, secretary, and treasurer were Brll Berg, Sonny Shoemaker, Rita Whrtrng, and Jrm Jolmson Wrththe coming of Fall Festival, which was even more specralthrs year smce we would select the kmg and queen, the study halland classrooms were once agam adomed wrth posters and slogans, and the campaign managers worked their hardest on thier speeches When the curtams were opened on coronatron day, the suspense was ended as Krng Jim Johnson and Queen Mary McKee were crowned. The rest of the royal team consrsted of Glenna Dearholt, Jean Healy, Joe Suman, and Brll Lawrence Thrs year our football team was headed by co-captams Brll Lawrence and Jrm Johnson. Heclplrlng to back them up were Paul Stennes, John Wrolstad, Bob Nelson, Jerry Johnson, Drck Gregg, Joe Suman, and J Amley Putting forth their dforts m basketball for the last year are Brll Lawrence, Jrm Johnson, J rm Patten, and Darrell Miller As always, our faithful cheerleaders are out there leading us rn cheers This year two seniors Rita Whrtrng and Jean Healy are on the A squ We cannot fortell exactly what our success wrll be m the years to come, but we do know that while m hrgh school, we have strrved to accomplish the tasks set before us We, the gradrratrng class of 1957, wrll long remember our hrgh school days and srncerely hope drat we wrll leave somethrng of worth for the succeeding classes And sort rsthat tlre story of the Class of '57 rs now endrng Actually rt rs only the end of one chapter in a large vrlllrime of eaqaenences and opportunrtres We only hope that we wrll recogmze these opportunities and use them w O O O th ' 11.
