The Juniors have been preparing to make this year’s Prom a bigger success than last year’s. They have been saving money their freshman and sophomore years and finally hit it head on their junior year. All year long they are busy raising money for Prom by selling magazines and working concession stands. 21 In memory of Ted Adams (February 15, 1969-September 15, 1985) It’s too late to say good-bye, It’s not too late to say we cared, But it’s not too late to remember. The special times we shared. We’re going to be thinking of you, That’s hard not to do. We’ll be wondering why you left us, And just what you were going through. We cry a tear of frustration, We cry a tear of sorrow, When we said good-bye on Saturday, We didn’t know good-bye was tomorrow. — Cyndy Taylor Upper Right:Getting ready for a hard day’s work in Health, are Curt Fogerson and Richard McDermith. It took staff members until March to finish selling ads. There were only nine staff members who worked. Sophomore Michelle Cody expressed her views on the situation. “I think there should be a yearbook next year, but I think it’s up to the whole school to work on the yearbook, not just a few people.” The staff did have some laughs, mostly at Mr. Taylor’s sense of humor. CHANGES BRING NEW DIMENSIONS The days of Bulldog skirts, saddle shoes, and Fifties tunes have been replaced by sequined suspenders, bow ties, and professional choreography for BHS show choir DEEP PURPLE. We added a new dimension by incorporating movement, said director Karen Wilkinson. “We will still continue to do a lot of music from the Fifties and Sixties, but will include songs from the years before and after that also. The seventeen member group performed a diverse selection of music as they combined movement with popular songs such as Neutron Dance and You’re the Inspiration while continuing a tradition of excellence that is apparent in all of its appearances. The play chosen, “Meet Me in St. Louis” by Christopher Sergei, was based on the life of the Smith family during the early 1900’s as they prepared for the 1904 World’s Fair. Seniors Heidi Rad-maker and Mark Woolley were named best dancers. “Obsession” played for after Prom at the Bement Legion. Many juniors and seniors won prizes. There was a variety of injuries in the 1985 season which forced the Bulldogs to turn to underclassmen. Coach Lane hopes that, “valuable experience at the Varsity level will put the Bulldogs on a winning track in future years.” Coach Lane remarked about the Bulldogs “Your dedication and leadership was greatly worth the effort. You were truly ‘Bulldogs’ with a lot of Class and Pride.” The season ended with the sports banquet in which Tim Walsh received the MVP award and was named Best Defensive Player. Best blockers were Mike Day, and Andy Brennan. Best Offensive Player was Tyler Morton and most improved was Jeff Price. Upper Right: The Bulldogs are set while Tim Walsh takes the snap from center. Freshman Jason Shonkwiler commented, “I think we’ll be more experienced, and we're definitely ready for another L.O.V.C. crown. Jason is just one of the many confident J.V. players at BHS. “The J.V. football season was a success from the standpoint of experience gained,” remarked Coach Harshbarger. The J.V. conference record was 4-1, allowing only 8 points in the 4 wins. “This group of guys has a bright future in football,” were Coach Harshbarger’s closing words. Coach Nuxoll commented The girls varsity team ended the season with a 8-14 record. We had a very up and down season due to inconsistency. We could give anyone in our conference a tough match when we were playing well. A indicative of our potential was a third place finish in the conference tournament. We also had three players receive conference honors this season.” The three players that received conference honors were Theresa Flavin, Jody Lewis and Lora Manalisay. Theresa and Jody were named to the Second Team All-Conference, while Lora was given Flonor-able Mention. The varsity volleyball players were Jody and Joy Lewis, Teri Ekiss, Theresa Flavin, Lora Manalisay,Tracy Pierce, Pam Baker, Teresa Roderick and Tonya Bowdre. The players have a bright outlook on the past season and the up and coming season. Junior Tracy Pierce commented “I think the overall season was pretty good, but as a team we need to do more talking on the floor and work together.” Tonya Bowdre, another Junior stated “I think that we had a really good season. It was hard work but well worth it. The saying that ‘You play like you practice’ was sometimes true. We had our good nights and our bad.” The J.V. Volleyball Team also started the season with a loss. The J.V. team had a lot of girls on it but not enough uniforms for everyone. The J.V. girls shared their uniforms. Some nights some girls would dress, other nights other girls would dress. Miss Simcox the J.V. coach commented about the season. “Working with the Lady Bulldogs was a unique experience. Each individual’s talent was evident on the court as well as off. I never really knew what to expect from each girl.” The J.V. team ended the season with a 6-12 record. The Freshmen thought that high school volleyball was alot different than the middle school. Trixie Stoerger, a Freshman, commented “ I think we had a pretty good team this year. Miss Nuxoll helped alot of the Freshmen improve. I like high school volleyball; it is alot of fun. The upper-classmen were a big help, they taught us alot. They didn’t seem to mind helping us out. Upper Right: Jody Lewis receives her M.V.P. award from Coach Nuxoll at the Awards Banquet. The volleyball awards that went to individual players were the M.V.P. which went to Jody Lewis; the Bulldog Pride Award went to Alisa Fairbanks. The Service Percentage Award went to Tonya Bowdre and Teri Ekiss received the Most Improved Award. Also recognized was Senior Theresa Flavin who had the most dinks and spikes. 55 BULLDOGS RECORD DECEIVING When looked at, the Bulldogs record was deceiving. The Bulldogs ended the season with a 8-14 record. Seven of those losses came the first seven games of the season before the Shiloh Tournament. After the Tournament the Bulldogs turned things around and went 8-7. The Bulldogs winning streak came at the end of the season. Coach Wingle said the turn around was caused by confidence, maturity, some home games and two Seniors who hated to lose. At the Award's Banquet, five awards were made. Tyler Morton received one for being Assist Leader, John Thomas received one for Best Free Throw Percentage and Eric Clements received three. Eric was the team’s Leading Rebounder, Leading Scorer and received the M.V.P. award. Also receiving recognition was Tim Walsh and John Thomas for being named to the L.O.V.C. Honorable Mention, All-Conference Team. Above: The Bulldogs get rowdy before the beginning of the game. Middle: The Bulldogs warm-up before the second half of the game. Coach Harshbarger stated “The team showed typical J.V. tendencies in that a consistent style of play was difficult to achieve. Overall, each and every player improved their basketball skills, and the team as a whole improved over the course of the season.” Due to the lack of upperclassmen on the Varsity team, many younger players got a lot of playing time at both the Varsity and Junior Varsity levels. Coach Harshbarger said “A very good foundation has been laid for the future, especially the next 2 to 3 years. Bement Basketball is definitely on the upswing.” The Freshmen played three games this season and won them all by 20 points or more. Above: The Bulldogs get ready for the second half of the game. The team only shot 24% for the season. They finished with a record of 3-14 defeating Atwood-Hammond, Villa Grove and Arthur. The Lady Bulldogs were rebounders; they outrebounded their opponents this sea- son! The leading rebounder was Theresa Flavin with 142; Theresa also had the most assists of 19 and was awarded Most Valuable Player. Flavin was also named to the LOVC All Conference Honorable Mention team. Teri Ekiss and Stephanie Jones tied for highest free throw percentage. Coach Nuxoll believes if the girls work on some of their fundamentals over the summer, Bement can become more competitive. Top: The Lady Bulldogs at their best, rebounding. Some inspiration came when the Freshmen won their first Freshmen game at Cerro Gordo. Bement also participated in the Maroa-Forsythe Freshmen Tournament in which they brought home a fourth place trophy. The Lady Bulldogs won the first game of the tournament despite the loss of power when the team was reduced to four players, due to foul trouble. At the Awards Banquet, Sophomore Alisa Fairbanks was awarded the Hustle Award for which both Varsity and Junior Varsity voted. 62 Top Right: Julie Laroe jumps enthusiastically lor the top Left: Trixie Stoerger shoots, while teammate Chris Warner watches in anticipation. Smaller teams, the boys with twelve and the girls with ten, made filling the events a hard task, so more concentration was put on individual accomplishments. Coach John Wingle taught that self-discipline was the winning factor. “When you get beaten, you just keep trying,” Wingle said, and his teams ended the season with four new records set by Rusty Hislope in the triple jump with a leap of 42’11 Vi , Lori Bowen with a time of 55.6 seconds in the 300 meter low hurdles, Theresa Flavin in the 400 meter dash in 62.3 seconds and the 800 meter medley team consisting of Dawn Ellis, Tyna Deffenbaugh, Jeannniene McHale, and Theresa Flavin set a record and placed third in the regional meet with a time of 1:58.1. The Most Valuable Player was John Thomas. Cory Shumard won the “Golden Glove” award. Chad Smith was named best pitcher while Time Walsh was named Best Hitter. There were 11 team members who received letters. The following were named 1st team All-Conference: Cory Shumard, outfield; Tim Walsh, infield; John Thomas, infielder; and Tyler Morton as catcher. “The game at Arthur I threw out three players who were stealing; it was a very important game for us because Arthur was Conference Co-Champs,” said Junior Tyler Morton, remembering an important game. The squad consisted of freshmen Tara Bowdre, Sherry Cozad, Stephanie Jones, Jeanniene McHale and sophomore Kim Nelsen. The girls appreciated the help of their new sponsor Sue Clark. Mrs. Clark is a third grade teacher and former Be-ment High cheerleader. The squad worked very hard to keep the crowd rowdy. Varsity cheerleaders enjoyed the ’86 season. Seniors Lisa Martin and Denise Quick, Junior Tonya Bowdre and Sophomore Toyna Deffen-baugh did an outstanding job cheering for the teams.
