As each year goes by or even each day, everybody becomes closer to his goal whether it be o winning season in his sport, winning on election, being o candidate in the Homecoming Court, graduating, or just ending the school year, each day brings one closer to these goals. The Closer You Get was selected as the theme of the 1964 Portrait of Pride. This theme represents, in more than one way, the things that happen every day at Dement High School. Every student at DHS contributes in one way or another to the theme of the 1984 yearbook. Although everything may not go exactly as planned, each step taken may bring you forward or set you back a little, but you have to keep trying. The Bement Community Band gave high school students, as well as community members, the chance to warm up their chops . The Marching Bulldogs competed in several parades placing first in the Lovington Parade, second in the Old-Fashioned Day Parade, and third in the Farmer City Christmas Day Parade - a tremendous achievement since the eighth graders did not march with the high school cutting the band size in half. The Bulldogs sold cheese and sausage to support themselves. The annual chili and spaghetti suppers were held to raise money. At the Awards Concert, Seniors James McHale, Angi Carney, and Drum Major Jamie Ater conducted. Angi Carney was awarded the John Philip Sousa Award and James McHale received the Louis Armstrong Award. For the seniors in the Homecoming Court, it was as close as you can get to Paradise , and for the two lucky ones, it was probably Paradise .
