Coach Jim Hays completed his first year of coaching with a 7-0 conference record and advanced the 2 NEW STUDENTS TIE YEAR TOGETHER team to the IHSA state playoffs. The football season was highlighted when Steve Swaim crowned Jody Williams as the 1979 Home- coming Queen. Coach Missy Stone led the volleyball team to its third consecutive undefeated conference title. Both teams were fully supported by the students and the community. Because of the 1978 referendum, BHS now has a new agriculture and industrial arts building. It was completed in the spring and will benefit the students in the coming years. BHS saw many new faces this year including Gitte R. Madsen who was an exchange student from Denmark. She was an honorary graduate of the Senior Class, and was hosted by the Richard Thomas family. As new faces come, familiar faces go. After 25 years of teaching foreign language at Bement, Mrs. Virginia Dare retired. Her dedication and fine teaching skills will be remembered and missed by students and faculty alike. 3 STUDENTS BUCKLE DOWN AND LOOSEN UP School was not always a time for hard work; it was also a time for fun, for relaxing, and for being with friends. Although, sometimes having too much fun can get you into trouble, even the faculty and administration show their sense of humor with the students. The combination of work and fun makes school enjoyable. s 1 HAPPY FACES Despite the hard work and pressures of school, students and faculty still manage to keep smiling. They are happy if they're working in concession stands, building floats, taking PE, or just studying in study hall. Smiles can depict your personality along « 6 MAKE HAPPY FEET with the clothes you wear right down to your shoes. We chose the theme. Shoes, because we think that the different shoes people wear can reveal their personality. Shoes aren't just for comfort, or even looks, your shoes, like your smile, can become a vital part of your character. 7 FACULTY THERE IS NO SHOE LIKE AN OLD SHOE Orthopedics: As orthopedics help soothe your feet, the faculty and administration help comfort the students as educators and friends. The close relationship between the students and the faculty makes school a comfortable as an old shoe. 8 BOARD MEMBERS. EXECUTIVES KEEP THINGS BUCKLED DOWN During the past year our administration has made some important changes. The school board spent many hours selecting a new superintendent for the district. They adopted new school policies; and the Agricultural and Industrial Arts Building was begun. The weather extremes posed problems for all the administrators-including school cancellation decisions and rescheduling sports events. Superintendent Thomas Kelley makes one of his many pnone calls. 10 Unit Treasurer Inez Crim knows her job well. Pat McCullough, Secretary, is ready to help you. Like your first pair of shoes, your years in high school are the most painful. Getting used to high school is like breaking in a new pair of shoes. But as time goes on, it becomes more com- fortable. Your beginning in high school, as your first few steps, can be one of your most memorable of learning experiences. 16 Kim is caught off guard by the staff photographer. Important things are put on a platform as are the activities at BHS. Homecoming, Senior Play, and Prom are special events that require many hours of hard work until the final moment that they begin. Most students will remem- ber these activities throughout their lives, whether they took part in the planning or just went to enjoy. Everyday treads are kicked off and replaced by more elegant shoes for the special activities. 36 37 SPIRIT FILLS MISTY HOMECOMING The theme for homecoming was Misty. During Spirit Week, there were many activities. Each class saved pop cans for a week and then built a pyramid. The seniors won. Another day was specified as hat day. Cindy Guffey won with the craziest hat. And, last but not least, was Mr. Irresistible Day. On this day, girls bought paper lips for a time, and if a boy got the girl to speak to him, he got her lips. Chuck Price and Dana Foran tied with twenty-eight lips each. At Homecoming the crown bearer was Jason Shumard and train bearers were Natalie Sams and Tiffany Schnierle. Dave Spalding, Carol Bertsch, and Deb Cahill provided entertainment until the dance began, and the homecoming band Scheme took over. This year's cast was made up of all seniors. Miss Sharp, director, enjoyed working with them and was eager to comment on the play. One of the nicest things about this cast was that they were able to keep the spirit of the play, its warmth and humanity. Nick Manalisay shows good format. 95 A cut-off system is an important part of a team, as shown by the Bulldogs. BOUNCIEST SHOES AROUND Ellen helps cheer on the crowd! The girls were very busy during the year. Not only with school and ball games but with lots of other activities as well. After the games the girls made cookies for the football players and cupcakes for the basketball players. They also prepared and put on many skits for pep rallies. During the snake dance the cheerleaders organized the bon fire at football field for the football boys. It was the last year for Becky Miller, Jody Williams, and JV Cheerleaders: Kim Auth, Karla Fritz, Nancy Fendley, Jan Johnson, and Theresa Bates. Becky helps with refreshments. 96 The boys get some energy before the big game. Janet Fendley, the senior cheerleaders. The girls got new sweaters and skirts too and they held cheerleader clinics as well. Even after school was finished for the summer, the girls worked on. They attended camp during the summer in Bloomington, Indiana. There, they learned new cheers, sidelines, chants, and even disco dancing. It was a lot of work, but the girls had a lot of fun doing it!
