Bement outscored Cerro Gordo's Broncos 32-22, and then the Bulldogs pasted Atwood-Hammond's Rajahs 29-14 in the season finale. The change in Bement's season came just before the game with eventual conference champion, Oakland. Head coach, Mike Jurgens installed a Power I offense, and Bement was never held to under 200 yards rushing in any game after the switch. The contributions to an individual player's character or the lessons gridiron competition taught to the 1973 Bement players and fans will be reflected in the deeds of these people in years to come. Whether this was a winning or losing season will depend on the deeds of these people. Dave Rutledge, Sr. Center and Def. Tackle--First Team All-Conference; All Area Def. Tie for Second Debbie Tiffin drew this likeness of a Bulldog in the Varsity This player was ready for action in the Homecoming game, locker room. Football 73” The 1973 football season was one of almost for Bement's Bulldogs. The team posted a 4-5 overall record; a record that was almost 7-2. In conference play Bement recorded a 4-3 slate which was good for a share of second place. The Bulldogs almost won it all; their record could have been 6-1 just as easily as 4-3. The almosts in our season were provided in the second, third, and fourth games of the season against Jamacia, Homer, and Oakland. Bement dropped all three of these games in the last 40 seconds of play, two of them on fourth and goal situations. Couple these defeats with our opening debacle at Gibson City and you have the lowest point in Bement's 1973 season. The Bulldogs bounced back with two tough victories over Arthur and Villa Grove. It was the first time in 13 years that Bement had beaten the Grovers, and things were looking up for Bement. The Homecoming game against Newman proved to be the biggest single disappointment of the season for the Bulldogs. Bement blew a 14-0 first quarter lead, and Newman took to the air for the final three quarters to pin a 36-22 defeat on the Bulldogs. The offense, which had been sputtering in early season, erupt- Rich Walsh applied the final crunch to Jeff Moery's tackle. Mr. Jurgens lets his opinion be known. Jeff McCabe and Les Jennings are about to combine on a handoff. Bill Walsh gets help from several purple jerseys on this tackle. 13
