In the fall of 1963, as the new superintendent of the Bement Schools, I felt the class entering that fall had a great future. To be in the upper half of this graduating class, one would have to possess a 3.8 grade average over four years. I had spent the six previous years watching most of them grow in stature. After four more years, I have not changed my opinion. When I look back over the years, most of our graduating classes have been above the national norms. Many graduates have been most successful. I am sure most of them will be in the future. It is a great pleasure and privilege for me to have a part in guiding the youth of this community and for my children to attend your fine schools. I am especially happy that our community provides youth with a chance to attend public schools K through 14. I hope that many of our graduates will take advantage of our new Junior College 505. May I suggest that happiness is the greatest virtue of man. The place to be happy is here, the time is now, the way is to make others so. Time moves rapidly, days forming the weeks and months as the school year rushes by. It seems that only yesterday this school year began, and now it is drawing to a close. Thinking back over the year I must say it has been a good year. There have been many gay, happy times and some serious ones too. There have been parties and dances and victorious ball games. There has been study and hard work and deep thought. It has been a year of people doing things they knew had to be done and things they enjoyed doing. It had been a year of accomplishment and growth. All these things were made possible because of you, the student body. You have studied and worked with the determination to do great things. You-have entered into the extra-curricular activities with a zest that is a joy to watch. You have made the year one to be remembered and looked back on with pride. Under the guardian of a very able faculty, you have made good progress toward the future you seek. 4
