n ■ f .j-ii _ti 'isa Foreword The pathways through high school are memorable ones. We hope that through this book we have portrayed a span of these pathways to the future upon which each of us travels. Education is in itself a wide and heavily traveled pathway. There are many forks in this pathway, each leading to some goal set by those who are traveling upon it. Just as some roads are unpaved, so are some pathways to success unpaved. There are many rough and threatening sections. However, if the goal is kept in sight, all difficulties can be surmounted, and the pathway will have served its purpose of furnishing a means of guidance. We are proud of our faculty who are the guideposts along our pathway through high school. Without them, our trek would be futile. With all these things in mind, we present to you the 1966 BIM. The student body at Bement High School is one of the finest. You are to be complimented on your citizenship, scholarship, and cooperation. It is little wonder that so many of you are successful in life. The administration, faculty, and board try to give you the best possible chance to succeed. This class is one of our smallest in number, but great in accomplishments. Often great things come in small packages. The chief aim of our school is not just imparting knowledge, but stimulating you in its pursuit. Board Links City with School LEFT TO RIGHT: Robert Postlew ait, Warren Hendrix, Guy Totten, Secretary; Robert Jones, Donald Temple, President; Ray Walsh, W. J. Gorrell. These busy Board members take time from their various occupations to help form the vital link between the community and school. A member of the Board of Education gets little recognition for many hours of hard work. We owe our sincerest thanks to these people who devote much time and energy to improving our school. MR. THOMAS HENSLEY--Principal As a friend, as a counselor, and as a principal there is no problem too small or too big for him to listen to. We all appreciate the fine job he has done in contributing to the success of Bement High School. The Student Council serves many purposes, the principal aim being to facilitate communication between the administration and the student body. Representatives from various classes and the Student Council's two advisors meet to plan social functions, to regulate extracurricular activities, and to provide a medium through which student opinion may be heard. Thus each Bement High student, through his Student Council representative, has a voice in shaping school policies. Bement High looks to its Student Council as a model for student conduct, and each council member is expected to uphold the dignity of the position to which he has been elected. Mrs. Betty Slagle came to Bement High School this year and fills the important position of bookkeeper which contributes to the efficient operation of our school. Her cheerful personality has made her popular with students and teachers alike. Miss Dana Hite began her first year as Mr. Hargraves’ secretary. She performs her office tasks efficiently and possesses the good disposition needed for her occupation. The Big Moment . . . •’STRANGER ON THE SHORE Joey Thompson, Crystal Durbin, and Jody Jarboe witnessed the highlight of the 1965 Homecoming, the crowning of their majesties Wendy Taylor and Mary Medaris by escorts Ray Plummer and John Hendrix. On the night of October 15, through the magic of decorations, our gymnasium was transformed into an enchanting ocean shoreline. As tension mounted, the lights dimmed and the royal attendants entered, followed by Her Majesty Mary Medaris and Her Majesty Wendy Taylor. For the first time since 1927, the student body elected co-queens. Don Smith and his band provided soft music which enhanced the mood of Stranger on the Shore. ’65-’66 Timeline of B.H.S. Mrs. Raylene Scholtens gives her undivided attention to Editor Vic Manny and Co-editor Steve Ayers as she decides it is time to get going. This volume evinces the fact that the BIM staff eventually got busy and found that knee deep in photographs, with their fingers in the glue, copy sheets, and typewriter ribbons, it actually could be fun. We now look back and realize that the bickering, panic sessions, the mounds of photos and paper, and the gray hairs added to Mrs. Scholtens' head represent to us the highpoint of the school year. Indeed, we sincerely hope that you, the reader, will enjoy reliving a few moments of this year with the compliments of the 1966 BIM staff. SEATED: Diane Shepherd. It was presented to the Grade School in a Wednesday matinee, and to the general public on both Thursday and Friday evenings. This was the first time the play had been performed on two evenings. Each senior was greeted with the flourish of a trumpet and the roll of a drum, while the town crier announced the senior's arrival at the stately palace. A feast fit for a king was served to the Lords and Ladies. From among the seniors a Prince Charming and a Cinderella became the honored couple for the evening. Later a lovely evening of dancing to music inside the luxurious walls of the castle beset a mood of enchantment and mixed emotions.
