We hit the surface with a resounding impact and toss violently with the waves. With memories of our ventures beneath the sea, we climb from the diving bell onto ship board once again. To our surprise we see Ensigns Fred and Harold Vannatta who offer to show us about the liner. Soon we are amazed to leam that manyof our clammates are aboard. We see Margaret Fenn and Stacey Bru- den engaged in an active game of shuffleboard after an unexpected meeting during the voyage. At the pool lifeguard Bill Stout is supervising the not- able swimmer, Donna Gibson and her troupe in their rehearsal for the water ballet. The group includes Eileen Mueller, Ann Banghart, Lucille Wester, and Margie Gladd. Donald Brands, owner of the famous nation-wide chain of furniture stores, dictates aletter to his sec- retary, Dorothy Halvey, on the top deck while taking in the ocean air. Standing at the ship's prow are Gayle Sanders, Anne Cavanaugh and Marion Buch- man reminiscing old times of B. H. S. while en- route to Paris together. Gayle is Dean of Women at the Belvidere Technological University, Marion, secretary to the head doctor in Montclair City Hos- pital and Anne, a critic for a fourth-coming dance review in France. We also see concert soloist Irene Gaus, about to retire to her stateroom. Irene has just finished a billing with the Met. Following our ears, we are greeted by enthusi- astic shouts as we pass through the gymnasium door. There Jim Hart, athletic director on board, heads a recreation program. Carl Musser and Ralph Keyser, professional basketball stars, keep in trim while Dr. jerry Sirotnak, orthodontist, limbers up on the mats. With about an hour left to ourselves before dinner we leave our guides and browse through the shops. At one of the counters we site Dorothy Bates, secretary to Sara Lee Albertson, aprominent French translator, on her way to Bordeaux to visit friends. Buying post cards and souvenirs nearby are Betty Crespo, govemes for the Rockefeller child- ren, Miriam Cox, heiress to an estate in France and Barbara Yeager, commercial artist for Cosmopolitan Magazine. At one of the writing desks sits Thomas B. Reed, Wall Street broker, waiting for news of the stock market. On the way to our stateroom to drew for dinner we pass Marion Oliver and Ottilie Gehel, nurses assigned to the trip. Relaxed and refreshed we are once again out on deck. Strains of Ainsworth Scott 's orchestra fill the air with enchantment. Soloists with the ensemble are Carole Werkheiser and Bill Jones. We sit down at a table near a group which is engaged in gay festivities--celebrating a double wedding anniversary. Our clasmates, the former Alberta Steele and Barbara Milner and their respec- tive husbands, are the guests of honor. Seated also at the table are Goldie Cruts, receptionist to the presidentg joan Miller, on her way to see her hus- band stationed in Germany, Naomi Morey, owner and operator of a fashion shop on fifth avenueg and Carolyn La Barre, President of the Fifth National Bank. With this, the spot light is focused on joan Uditis and Gary Smith. Joan teaches dancing in Boston and Gary teaches dramatics in the adjoining studio. The master behind the lighting on ship is Kenneth l-licks. As we look around we take note of many celebrities. At one table is Joyce Golub, ace of the Roller Derby, and her colleague, Clara M. Hillyerd. Nearby sits Stanford Allen, baseball manager of the National League. Suddenly, everyone's attention is drawn to the stage, for the entertainment is about to begin. Im- mediately the drums thunder and the curtains open for the entrance of none other than Robert Raf- ferty -- Red Skelton of '53, Following this act joan Spittle and Tier coralettes, a modern dance group including Patsy Tweedie and Elsie Gladd, make their appearance in lovely costumes designed by fashion artist Ruth Alleger, in an alluring fan- tasy of colors. On the left are two men dining at a table-- both seem deeply engrossed in the show. Our waiter tells us they are Henry DeBoer and Robert Clark, owners and manufacturers of custom de-luxe stock cars. Leonard Brown enjoys an evening alone with his wife since Yvonne Folkner, head of the nursery, is caring for their family. Glancing around, we see a group of our former classmates who are now composing a committee headed by Ellis Steele, Secretary of Agriculture in the United States cabinet, on their way to lran to survey farming conditions. Assisting him are: Frank Demeter, authority on jet-propelled farm equip- ment, Eugene A. Hausold, renovsmed inventor of a self-rnilking cowg jack MacVicar, prominent auth- ority on crop rotation and soil erosiong Alfred P. Nightengale and Glen W, Osmun, president and vice-president of the United States Agricultural Universityg Oliver Smith, leading produce distri- butor, owner and operator of a large fruit and veg- etable martg and Bonnie Menegus, famous cattle dealer in the West. Dawn breaking across the horizon finds us re- freshed by a night's sleep and gaily strolling the deck. Upon hearing a shout of joy our eyes travel upward to the crow's nest where Pat Calafiore stands poised with a telescope in his hand, eagerly scanning the sea for memiaids. Our walk is disturbed by heavy panting and pounding of feet. Tearing arotmd the comer come john Wisner and Barry Stocker, professional football stars, keeping in shape with an early moming lap around the top deck. Behind them at a graceful gait is Loretta Domine with her Mclasy canines. Stepping into the Captain's cabin, we see Anna Petrilak and Pearl Wagner, shorthand books tucked under their arms, about to begin their day's tasks. Man overboard! Oh nol lt's only the great scientist, Marjorie Race leaning over the rail at- tempting to determine some unknovsm facts about marine life for her new book. Suddenly Marjorie emits a joyful shout for she thinks she has found a new species of fish, but it turns out to be Ronald Sarson in his diving suit, diving for pearls. Continuing on our way, we pass several girls sunning themselves in deck chairs. On second glance we recognize Janice l-lartzell, working on her new novel Three Fathorns Deep g Florence Kutzler, newly appointed ambassador to Luxem- burgg Pearl MacVicar and Catherine Casey, co- executives of a reknown chain of department storesg and Marilyn Laughlin, famous model of Dazzler's nailpolish. A roar above us reveals Roger Learn zooming about an upper deck testing rubber bumbers that were made by that famous manfacturer, Dick Gar- rison who stands watching nearby checking for deficiencies that may cause an accident. Stepping into the club room we see lounging in one of the easy chairs, that famous laboratory tech- nician, Grace Wolfinger, who is taking a vacation after discovering a cure for coronary serocic of the optic nerve. As we gaze across the room we notice jane Stampone and her multi-millionaire husband look- ing at travel folders, trying to decide where to take their next vacation. Realizing that our tour of the cruiser is comp- leted, we meander out on the deck for the last time, where our diving bell is silhouetted against the rays of the sun, slowly sinking in the horizon. As we climb aboard our diving bell, which is about to submerge once again into the ocean's depths, we reluctantly wave good-by to all our classmates whom we look forward to seeing with great antici- pation in the near future. if l N, ., ,. The County Seaters fought hard and vigorously in an attempt to win the Little Three trophy. The season ended with a total of five wins, one tie, and one loss, thus B,H.S, lost the trophy that they strived so hard to win. Even though the trophy was lost, Belvidere High made the best showing since football was started back in the early thirties. This has proved to be a successful year and we only hope B,H, S, can main- tain this high standing in the future years.
