One word could describe the lives of men-and that word is 'ichallengef' The first challenges were walking for the first time and learning to tie your own shoelaces and riding a bike without training wheels. Then came the challenge of playing baseball so well all the fellows wanted you on their team or setting the table so Mama didn't have to reset it. Next came the challenge of having more expected of you. You were supposed to make good grades and do things with- out being told. , Then there was the immense challenge of being able to say just the right thing when you asked her for a date or being charming and beautiful when he came by to take you to the game. There will be challenges yet to come that are even greaterg we are told. How we meet these challenges will be our lives' stories. THE LAIR looks to the challenges faced here at Belton High School from September, 1969, to May, 1970. STUDENTS MEET CHALLENGES OF SERVICE TO SCHOOL lf' 5s 7 Q, Q ft DNDiTlONED f . Some were concerned with service such as Student Teacher Day of the National Honor Soci- ety which gave a relief to the faculty and an experience in teaching to its members. Others such as the contribu- tions ofthe Student Council proved to be beneficial to the outlook of Belton High such as their painting of the Big Red Tiger sign to generate spirit and the painting of the sports-minded Tigers on the trash cans and the Tigers paws on the benches which added a sparkle to the hueless surroundings. All of these projects signify the diligence and cooperations of the stu- dents involved and their ac- ceptance ofthe challenge for the improvement of B.H.S. DAILY CHALLENGE OF A STUDENT -W MQ. WH FACET9 OF MUSIC OFFER Music is like a many sided prism catching one light and sending it out in multicolored rays. Perhaps a scientist could explain to us why golden sun light can be transformed by the magic ofthe prism, but most of us simply accept the miracle of the prism for its beauty. Music is like a prism because it takes the simplicity of the human de- sire and shines it through the prism of talent and imagination send- ing out beautiful rays of music, whether it be the shrill notes ofa flute floating above all other sounds of the band, or the hours of almost fanatical devotion to learning intricate marching drills, or not studying for that big English test because ofthe operetta rehearsal tonight. The many facets of music offer a challenge and Belton High School meets this challenge and sends out brightly shining rays of music. CHALLENGE TO BHS STUDENTS W Y THE CHALLENGE OF , n COMPETITIVE ATHLETICS As in any other field of endeavor, the competition in sports was toughg neverthe- less the pride and determination ofthe players in each sport helped in their accept- ing the challenge and their having a victor- ious season. Eluding that would-be tackler for the first touchdown ofthe season, rushing the oppo- nent quarterback, struggling for every inch, and the blocking line's opening the necessary gap for the alert halfback to sprint through to paydirt all exemplify that the Big Red Tigers met their challenge in football. CHALLENGE OF SPIRIT l cf. Spirit is a state of mind. It possesses your whole existance and carries your soul to heights of ecstasy andjoy when victory is yours and despair and sorrow when defeat comes. Spirit can bring out the best ofa student body . . . Here at Belton High School the students have met the challenge of spirit and found a deep and meaningful pride in their school. I,A. ,,..,.,.....--.Q 5 Venison!!!- Every school day students are faced with challenges in the classroom- challenges of doing Well on a test, of participating intelligently in a class discussion, and of understanding new knowledge. The teachers are also faced with a challenge of capturing and hold- ing the attention ofthe students, of presenting instruction in new and in- teresting ways, and of reaching the desire of a student to want to learn and understand. Added to this daily challenge are the new methods and concepts of education which are a part of the changing times of today. The faculty and students have met the challenges of today's education and look forward to the even greater chal- lenges of tomorrow. Valentine Day hit BHS this year with the help of the Student Council. Mr. Tomlinson displays his sweetness by presenting Coach Sullivan with a token of his admiration. Terry Taggart was almost swamped behind the box she carried. Whoever was lucky enough to receive this box, must have gained a couple of pounds. And then there were those speedy candy deliveres. This year's scrapbook, under the organization of Linda Long, won second place in the Student Coun- cil Convention at Teague. The Student Council con- tributed to the spirit for football games by painting signs and decorating the halls each week. They also sponsored noise day during homecoming week. An- other popular activity of the Student Council is Slave Day. Did you know that the Student Council also sponsors the paper and .V pina candy machines? Good ol' George, see the eighteen letter Word he wrote in red ink on the white poster board??? Well . . . neither did anyone else. Breaking the pinata, a typical Spanish item of festivity, was celebrated at one of the meetings. Many club members attempted to break the pinata but David Bartek outdid all of the other's at- tempts. Only he dicln't break the pinata, but Mr. Langford was very busy picking up the remains of the stick. The Spanish Club's Christmas project was to act as Santa Pal to needy families. Although Big Red scored first, the Roughnecks led at halftime: 7-6. Every player played an outstanding game as only three points were scored in the second half. After Marvin Weir's interception and his 23 yard return, everyone still had high hopes for the '69 Tigers but somehow Fate intervened and David Bartekls attempt was four inches short of the necessary first down at the Roughneck's sixteen yard line. 93 TIGER B TEAM l Front row: MEYER, WATSON, BUTTONS, RANDOLPH, BOYD, COLLINS, HUSTON, MINICA, HENAGER, CASTOR, N HARRIS. row two: BOSTICK, MOONEY, STEWART, DULANEY, FULCHER, BROWN, HERRINGTON, KILLMAN, NEL- SON, TAGGART, KENNINGTON, MILLER. row three: COACH BLANKENSHIP, BEERWINKLE, ROGERS, CURRY, MISHER, CON KLETON, RAY, CHANEY, PUSTKA, WILLINGHAM, PETTY, CRONE, HUGHLING, COACH SULLIVAN. N-Q W ii it Being a senior is about the greatest thing you can be. Every senior is just a little bit conceited about the fact that he is a senior. Being a senior means showing off your senior ring to the underclassmen, being a semor member of a varsity team, get- ting measured for cap and gown, and deciding how you want you name on the diploma. It's being exempt from exams and being a little bit too smug about it, being a senior member of the greatest band anywhere, watching or performing in the sen- ior play and knowing that it is the greatest one ever given. It's parking in the senior parking lot and not having to hike a half mile to your car. It's raeking your brain on the SAT or ACT tests, or it can be falling in love and planning a wedding. But most most of all it's growing up. It's just about the greatest thing you can be. Q jessica: I'm going to be a lady wrestler!
