STUDENT LIBRARIANS Using pupil assistants in a school library had its origin in the need for help in extending library service. It has continued because the students them- selves find satisfaction in the services they render. The student who works in the library is there be- cause he wants to be there, and has proved that he is willing to strive to perform the tasks assigned him. The work that he does means a great deal to him as well as to the school. 48 X His service to the library is designed to increase its effectiveness without expecting him to do the tech- nical duties which require training and experience be- YOUCI hiS CHD-HCity. He is not, therefore, a trained librarian and cannotperform theprofessional services expected of a faculty librarian, He is, however, 3 valuable and indispensable assistant who strives to Promote co-operative attitudes between the faculty librarian and the students. They not only learned many things, but served their school as they prepared daily bulletins and distributed them to all the classrooms, answered the 'JCJOCIQ' Shisler, Sheron Shirk, Harritte Turner, Lynette Hy- more. telephone, delivered messages, and assisted new students in finding their way, There was a sense of satisfaction for each girl as she performed her daily and varied tasks, She received valuable experience in meeting people, and in working co-operatively with them as she endeavored to meet their needs. 49
