The staff also prepares salads, sand- wiches, and desserts which may be purchased separ- ately. R BUILDI When the plans for Belton's new high school were drafted, allowances were made for the schoo1's steady growth, When the last of the two buildings was completed in the fall of 1959, both buildings were already crowded by that year's enrollment. Statistics concerning the J unior and Senior High School are listed below. N15 LIBRARY Open stack book cases are one of the latest features 'in the library. Approximately 80 students can be seated here at one time, During the summer months text books are stored in a storage room located at the front of the library, and in the fall all books are issued from this room. as f Q Gay, INDUSTRIAL ARTS The industrial arts room has been equipped GYMNASIUM During the day boys and girls hold separate gym classes on two full size courts. At night varsity basketball teams COITI- pete with the Pirates on a 90' X 50' regulation court. The folding bleachers have a seating capacity of 1,100 for games, and the gymnasium will accomodate an audience of 1,800 for stage presentations. Other features of the gymnasium are a capacious stage, two large dressing rooms, and a health room. HOME ECONOMICS Home economics girls are taught the fundamentals of cooking from six complete kitchens. The most modern kitchen contains a built-in oven and range, garbage disposal, and dishwasher. Half of the kitchen stoves are electric, the other half, gas. This department also contains eight sewing machines, and a washer and dryer. STUDENT LIBRARIANS Using pupil assistants in a school library had its origin in the need for help in extending library service. It has continued because the students them- selves find satisfaction in the services they render. The student who works in the library is there be- cause he wants to be there, and has proved that he is willing to strive to perform the tasks assigned him. The work that he does means a great deal to him as well as to the school. 48 X His service to the library is designed to increase its effectiveness without expecting him to do the tech- nical duties which require training and experience be- YOUCI hiS CHD-HCity. BASKETBALL The 1959-60 version of the Pirates' basketball team was one which gave the fans plenty of excitement and the coach plenty of gray hairs. Not more than two or three points separated the winner from the loser in all but four or five games. I If 3 X HoMECoM1N Thursday, October 29, marked the beginning of the Homecoming for 1959. Activities began with the customary Snake Dancewhich wound its way along the Main Street for a number of zealous cheers and then continued to Memo- rial Park. lncludedin the program at the pep rally was a history of Belton's first football team given by Mr. Russell Mullen. Climaxing the evening was the crowning ofMiss Denny Schmidt, senior, as the 1959 Homecoming Queen. As the queen and her attendants gathered at the royal throne, Belton students faced the burning dummy of Grain Valley and sang Belton's school song. Friday afternoon was highlighted by the pa- rade. Class floats, the queen and her court, junior and senior pep clubs, the band, bicycle riders and horses slowly made their way down the main streets of town. At the 1959 Homecoming game, the Pirates took the field amid the encouraging shouts of vic- tory from the enthusiastic crowd. And victorious they were, as Belton defeated the Grain Valley Eagles 20-2. Rounding out the activities was the Home- coming Dance in the school cafeteria decorated in a Mardi Gras theme, bringing to a close a memo- rable event for all who participated.
