The Flrates football +eam for l95h accompllshed what no other Belton team before them had ever done completinv their nine Pame season schedule without being emther defe ted or tned To make the record even more remarkable, the Pirates carried only 17 members on the slu d and the balance d' play was carried by 12 of these So sparse was the reserve strength that practice was possible onlv by having one side of the line oppose the other during scrimmage Weight wise, the Pirates averaged slightly over 159 pounds and utilived what are called little boys' However, the record speaks for itself as the players made up any difference in Speed, ability and fight ng heart Much of the credit, of course, should be laid at the door of Co ch G C Coomes, Jr who molded his material into such a formidable machine Coomes, an alumna of Belton Hlvh School, coached his first ye r of eleven man ball Evperience helped the Belton cause with only three p sitions lackinv a letternnn Seven seniors held top posts math two juniors and two sophomores filluna the startxng berths In the statistics record books, the pirates will be hard to equal an vears to c me Of nine opponents six were held scoreless and the other three ranaved to arass only total of 32 po nts amonv them while the Pirates scored 20? In every department on both offense nd defense, Belton heavily over powered their opponents combined efforts Offensively, Vernon Fucke carried the biv gun 1n scoring and yardage gained Elmer Blshop, a former l1neman, was the f1eld general and hand ed the chores with Sklll Gordon Smith, probably the most lmproved player on the te m, was a sterl1ng performer on both offense and defense at the right half back spot On the left s1de, Ed Greenwell, proved one of the most elusive runners seen th1s season Along the line the power was great as evidenced by the lack of scoring by the opposntion Bruce P essly, e rninv his fourth letter at right end, was the pass catcher and defens1ve genius John Porter, the heavy man, plugged the big hole at tackle for the third ye r Jerry Hankins, small as guards go, made speed and guts a tough combination to beat Bob Carter, working as center for the first vear, took the be ting given the spot wuthout a bobble Don Greenwell, a jun1or e rnlnn his third letter, was the qu1et man that nobodv ran over Two seniors playing the1r first ye r un the luneuo were left guard, Verl Bowers, nd end Adrian Hampshire Flrst reserve was Johnny Groh, sophomore end, who got in his share of the m1nutes BSCKIDQ thus lineup were the eserves vho showed regularly for practice and P ve support to the first strwng They were J Q Vyatt, Roland Nethaway, Brian Frank, Johnny Haskins, and Larrv Hankans ,sry ,Jak-.' , .34 1. - 6 ', ' W . - 'QQ7 , fx 1 ., .1 fs A-1 , bf 1. b . 3 ,,.
