I : BELT BUCKLE -- I FRESHMAN HISTORY What a dreary, unprofitable place is the Land of Ignorance! Being dissatisfied with it as a permanent abiding place, we Frosh, a band of hardy pioneers, strong, set sail September 1927 for the Realm of Know- ledge. Our first task was the selection of officers to guide the crew and bring our good ship, Education, safely to port. Captain James Irvine took the helm. Under his leadership Comrade M. Marsh was chosen first mate and B. Tuura has served faithfully as boatswain. We met the first grave danger of the voyage when our sturdy craft struck upon the Rock of Initiation. It was a dreadful place! Waves of Cruelty, Torture, Ridicule, and Humiliation, almost wrecked our vessel, but -Cheerfulness and Good Sportsmanship brought us at last into more quiet waters. Effort, and Loyalty have enabled us to win notable vic- tories in our contests with these stalwart warriors. The greatest battle was Won against the Sophomores in the Class Series Wars. We are justly proud of our triumphs and accomplishments, but trust this spirit will not blind us to the need of future efforts. Like the honor- able pioneers of the past, we shall endure, strive, and serve. So shall we prove ourselves Worthy of the blessings of the rich, new land. ' -Alice Klimas. SONNET The morning is so many miles away, S The winter nites surround us vast and cold, The vastless heaven many a star does hold With calmness and peace both having their full sway. All over the floods of silver moonlight lay. ' A glory on those billows that enfold, The rolling sea and verdant forest of old The weeping willows wait the distant day. Our dreams go forth unuttered to the West, The splendor of our fancies do have a weight, And vary like the thousand nature's glories.
