RAY DAVIS, Custodian ALBERT BONAR, Assistant Custodian Sponsored by O. G. VARNER Notary Public, 214 Walnut Street, Belpre, Ohio Board of Education LEFT TO RIGHT: Mrs. Eleanor Roberts, Superintendent, Lightfritz. INSET Russell Hamilton. SECOND ROW: Emerson Gates, Pierce Luzader O. E. Garrett, President, Arch Parsons, Clerk. A community service group which shoulders a lot of responsibility, works without propor- tionate financial reward, is often criticized, but seldon praised -- that's the Board of Education. We of Belpre should be especially grateful to our present Board which has added the plannning for our new high school building to the usual routine. Most of us have no idea how much time and effort have been spent. Trips to Columbus, going over blue prints and specifications, lengthy meetings with state authorities, much careful thought -- have been given most generously in order that Belpre might have a school suitable for our rapidly growing community. In behalf of our community, our school, and the Belpre children for years to come, we say Thank you, but we know their best reward is in the satisfaction of a job well done. Mr. P. F. Gaston, Vice-President Mrs. Jo Claire Milhone Mrs. Kathleen Salster Mr. Grady Welch, President Under the enthusiastic leadership of Mr. Grady Welch, aMaster Sergeant in the U. S. The Belpre Junior Band was organized in June, 1957, and totaled 33 members. It is now made up of students from the 6, 7, and 8 grades. Its purpose is to train them for the senior high school band. There are now 50 members of the band. The proudest day for the junior bandsmen was that day in October, when they participated in a parade for the first time. The occasion was the B.H.S. Football Homecoming. The junior band also marched on the football field that night to mark their first time to participate in a football game. This was the first time that the Belpre schools had presented two marching bands on the field. After that, they marched at three home football games and played the National Anthem with the senior band. Other activities for the year included a concert at the Belpre Homecoming in August and a concert at the Belpre Band Booster's spaghetti supper, February 14. E .. J Band Day - 1957 at o.U. Preparation of material for our school annual requires the help of every member of the class according to his interest and special ability. Photography, circulation, typing, advertising, write- ups, paste-ups -- each department requires hours of patient, careful work. We appreciate the half day of school time given for all members of the class to sell advertising. This proves to be fine business experience, The generous response of our friends makes possible this permanent record of student life. Am.m..W , U t is ,L WiAi -My J, K' I , X We seniors are glad to give a page in recognition of a former student of B.H.S. who has become famous. Most of you folks who read our book will already know the story of how John Arthurs in April of his Sophomore year in high school, fell from a limb beside a tree-house in the wood-lot near his Congress Road home, injuring his spine in such a way that he was completely paralyzed, except that he could move his head. In the first summer following his injury, his classmates of B.H.S. 5'7 sponsored an ice cream social which netted enough money to buy an orthopedic reversible bed. This made it possible for his mother to care for him at home. Months went by, there were problems of pastime and one day John found he could paint, holding the brush in his teeth. Mrs. Mary Meredith, who helped care for John as nurses aid, is an artist and showed some of his work at a meeting of the Ohio Valley Chapter of National Society of Arts. Mrs. Irvine, wife of President Bay Irvine of Marietta College, was the next link in the chain of interested persons thru whom John received a complete scholarship from the Famous Artists' School of Westport, Conneti- cut. John completes pictures, which are given a grade and constructive criticism. He is proud that he has never received less than a 'B' grade, and has had many complimentary comments from the famous artists who study his lessons as he turns them in. He hopes to become a commercial artist. We are all proud of J'ohn's talent, and we are even more proud of his fine courage, his ambition, and his fine religious faith, developed under stress of a tragic situation. In August, 1958, his high school class again sponsored an ice cream social to raise funds to help defray special expenses in- cident to his care. The response of the entire community was most heart warming, and seven hundred dollars was raised. The Spencer ambulance took John to the social, his first outing since the accident. At that time he gave, by recording, a little thank you speech, so beautifully worded that we are giving it here as representative of his inspiring attitude. No tribute is complete without mention of the devoted and skillful nursing care given by his mother, the affectionate attitude of his little sister, Linda, the spirit of camaradarie of his brother Jerry, and the courage of his father in striving to meet expenses. The family cooperation suggests for them the title, Belpre's Family of the Year, given at the social when each of thetn was pre- sented. J'ohn's thank-you was as follows: Good evening! I have been asked to say something that I have wanted to say for a long time now. I would first of all like to thank Mrs. Cowell and my classmates and all others who are associated in any way in preparing and arranging for the social here tonight. I would also Like to thank each and every one of you here and many who are not here for making it possible. Tonight is not the first time that you have shown your goodness and kindness toward me and my family. We do want you to know that we thank you. Good night and God keep you.
