XFX igx,-sa,-X ffljx N, BELPRE iff Belpre ftrst called Belle Pre was the ftrst off shoot of the Manetta settlement and was founded tn 1789 when the p1oneers began selectxng and occupymg the best lands IH the Ohto Company purchase lts htstory IS closely tnterwoven wtth that of the mother settlement There were three d1v1s1ons of the orrgrnal Belpre settlement These were known as the upper the m1ddle and the lower settlements The upper set tlement extended down the r1ver to what 1S now Rockland the m1ddle settlement came next and lS now Center Belpre the lower was known as the Newbury settlement Log cab1ns were bu1lt along the rtver front and the f1rst bustness of the settlers was to clear ground for crops The Belpre p1oneers suffered from the famtne of 1789 an early frost bltghted the corn crop destroytng about 200 acres 1n the settlement In 1791 the frrst fort1f1cat1on agatnst the lndtans was planned The nucleus for the famous strong hold, Farmers' Castle, was the log houses of Ebenezer Batelle and Colonel Nathantel Cushtng The srte of Farmers' Castle was nearly oppostte the center of Blennerhassett lsland The Ohlo Rrver gave protectton on the front, as a deep swamp dtd at the rear Mtlttary regulattons were enforced under Mator Nathan Goodale, who was placed tn charge of the garnson There were 70 men enl1sted for m1lttary duty Absence at roll call at sunrtse was pun1shed by reautrmg the vlo- lator of the rules to cut one of the many stumps tn the stockade The stumps raptdly dtsappeared Two more garrtsons were constructed before the close of the lndran War These were known as Stone s Garrlson and Goodale s Garrxson At the close of the lnd1an War however Indlan troubles were over so Farmers Castle was torn down and the settlers turned the1r attentlon to farmtng Among the ploneer settlers of Belpre were Cap- tam Wrlltam Dana Iohn and Rebecca Rouse whose daughter Bethsheba was 1n 1789 the f1rst female school teacher 1n the Northwest Terrltory W11l1am Brownmg who marrled Ab1ga11 daughter of General Rufus Putnam Captatn Ion athan Stone Colonel Battelle Captatn Ionathan Devol master mechamc of the p1oneers Aaron Waldo Putnam son of Israel Putnam Captaln Perley Howe who marned Persls daughter of Rufus Putnam and many other mtelltgent and enterprtsmg men The tlrst 11brary 1n the Northwest Terrltory was the Putnam Famtly Llbrary whtch was later called the Belpre Farmers Lrbrary, and IH whlch the Belpre p1oneers owned stock Be1pre was 1a1d out as a v11lage IH 1852 Au gustus H Brown1ng secured the SGFVICGS of S H Chamberlatn 1n maktng the plat There were onqrnally 18 burldmg lots Add1t1ons were made rn succeedmg years unttl the present area was reached In 1901 the resldents voted to lncorporate and the charter for the town was recetved tn 1902 Belpre has a populatton of 1,724 accord1ng to the census of 1934 4 Q ' ,' '- f- -'y.f-T , 1 X X1 Q if , ' 1 , -I -C 1 It ' ',, 1 -- E 5 - , . ,.,. 1 - Nh., ,l 'MIX , .. uh M .,.
