Despite the problems posed by the new 2-2-2 system, they have con- tinued to innovate improvements at Memorial, This year many new courses were added, among them Electronics, Computer Concepts and Black History. ln addition to providing us with a greater choice of courses, the administration set up the student lounge in cooperation with our Student Senate. ln these ways, and others, our administration has con- sistently improved the quality of our education. :.V:,t:.:::::5i,fi':.s. The Student Senate's goal for the year was to end student apathy through an increased amount of student activities and partici- pation. They accomplished this through a combination of old and new. The tradi- tion of a bon-fire was revived this year and proved to be lots of fun. The Senate organized the new student lounge early in the year which, although faced with many difficulties, eventually worked out. The Student Senate donated the proceeds from their annual toys for tots drive to the Salvation Army and thus served the com- munity as well as the student body. 82 P. Harris, Sec. J. Wichelt, V.P. M. BMHS had an art club for the first time in three years this year, and it was quite a success. Its mem- bers worked both on assigned projects such as a silk-screening and iunk sculpture, and on individual proiects. AFS One of our AFS Foreign Exchange Students, Maur- icio Chagas, came to BMHS from Salvador, Brazil. His school there is much like Tina's in that his classes were in the same classroom. Students at Mauricio's school choose their subiects in the areas of sciences, literature and languages, or mathematics and attend school for half days only. Mauricio has come to know many people during his stay in Beloit. Ac- cording to Mauricio, American girls are iust the same as Brazilian girls. Mauricio's future hopes are to become either an architect or a movie director. Tina Hagli, our Foreign-Exchange student from Arendal, Norway, found BMHS to be very different from her high school in Norway. There, her classes usually met in one classroom and students were re- quired to take twelve or thirteen courses. She es- pecially liked the super-highways, American drive-ins and American food-particularly the many different kinds of ice cream. Upon returning to Norway, Tina will complete her final year of high school and then go on to college. She hopes to maior in either soci4 ology or psychology. Left column: G. Kollath, T. Hagli, D. Beginning with the initiation hot pot in the fall, Junior Theater's activities reflected the zeal and zest of its members. At initiation, the neophytes were smeared with make-up, hit with whipped cream pies, and rolled down the main halls. Then came the two plays, Solid Gold Cadillac and Dirty Work at the Crossroads . These rollicking comedies, one the story of a small stockholder demanding her rights and the other a melodrama, were brought off successfully by hard-working casts and crews. Under the spirited leadership of eleven re- turning lettermen, the team posted a strong five wins-three losses and one tie record which left them in a tie for third place in the Big 8 Conference, the best finish since 1966. The word this year was balance. Team balance was exemplified by the post-season statistics. The offense finished fourth, while the defense ran a close third behind perennial stalwart, Madison West and surprisingly tough Racine Case. The season began with an extremely disappoint- ing tie with Monona Grove, who through the rest of the season, went undefeated. The following week- end, the Knights met a defensive-minded Madison West in the only real defeat of the season. Although the score was only 14-7, the statistics show that our 132 Purple Knights Place gridders were beaten more decisively, 341 to 149 in total yardage. After two disappointers,. the Purple Clad returned home to find two arch rival Janesville schools waiting to be eaten by the win-hungry Knights. ln the two gratifying games, the Purple and White defeated Craig, 20-8 and Parker 13-6. Then, the team experienced a letdown in the first half of the muddy, rain-drenched Madison East game. By then, the score was 14-0 and, although the Knights held East to 21 total yards in the second half, they were unable to cross the goal line due to wet field. In one of the most exciting football games ever played in Beloit, the Knights suffered a heartbreak- ing homecoming loss to the number two ranked team in the state, Madison LaFollette. The game was won on a last quarter field goal after Beloit had fought back twice from a one touchdown deficit. Final score, 19-16. X Ki in Lg1,3.f xx Q an 'wi A u i,,L 3: H' yx , I A A , A 1. x . The Knights flourished in revenge for the tough losses of the early season play. The team walked all over Madison Memorial with the offense com- piling 300 total yards and the defense being lead by Mike Masterson's T5 solo tackles, the single game high for the season. In the same fashion, Kenosha Tremper fell victim to the Purple people eaters by the same score, 34-7. In the final game of the year, Racine Case traveled to Beloit for what turned out to be a near repeat of the game played the year before, which Case won, 6-0. A last quarter touch- down pass from Joe Mcllwain to .lim DeNoyer pre- served a 24-19 victory. In the past-season polls, Beloit placed especially well in the Big Eight. John Hildebrandt and Leonard Byrd were named to the first team on both offense and defense while Mark Anderson, Dean Brinkman, Barry Nimz, Mike Masterson, Willie Hodges, Mark Fowden and Jeff Hanaman were all Honorable Mention. Next year's team will find only four returning lettermen: Center Barry Biorklund, and Jim DeNoyer, halfback Jeff Hanaman and tackle Mark Schmuck. The loss of eleven two-lettermen always marks a need for rebuilding, and Coach Heineke's iob is not an enviable one. . ,X -,K , , , V ,. K Y - . Q, Q , fair ,R , , . Beloit Purple Knights The Beloit Purple Knights, coached by Bernie Barkin, surprised everyone but themselves throughout the '69-'70 season as they won the Big Eight Cham- pionship for the sixteenth time in Big Eight history. This was also the second conference championship in a row for the Purple and White. The amazing Knights compiled an exceptional conference record of 13 wins and l loss and a 17 and l record overall. The Knights held the number one spot and a forty game winning streak until Racine Park spoiled the fun by upsetting the Knights at Racine by a score of 74-65. Captain and All-Stater Lamont Weaver led the Knights throughout the season in points and rebounds, finishing second in the Big Eight in scoring with a total of 332 points. He was also aided by the other four starters, Stan Storey, Mike Masterson, Willie Hodges and Tom Evans. The reserves came as a big surprise as Otha Williams, Mike Polglaze, Steve Larsen and Steve Hanslik came off the bench to do an exceptionally fine job. 140 Before the season Coach Barkin stated that the key to key to a good season would be the defense, to press and take advantage of other teams' mistakes and turnovers. The Knights' tallest man was 6'3 Tom Sudkamp, but what they lacked in height they made up for in hustle and desire. The year saw many close battles-Rockford East Q67-621, Racine Case Q63-571, Janesville Craig Q63- 62j, Janesville Parker Q56-5U-but all fell before the Knights and their tenacious defense. Beloit and Craig also played before a record crowd of over 3,000 people! The Knights led the Big Eight conference with the best defense, giving up an average of only 53.6 points a game, and had the second best offense, averaging 70.6 points per game. Although the Knights fell to Racine Park, they chalked up three quick final victories to maintain the number two rat- ing in the state polls. Six Knights Go To State Meet Six Knight swimmers, after showing well in the Sec- tional meet, earned a spot in the state meet. Carl Pantaleo led the way with three events, swimming in the T00 yard back stroke, 200 yard free style and 200 yard individual medley. Tom Saecker swam in the 400 yard free style and the 'l00 yard butterfly. Tim Redgrave swam in the 400 yard free style and the 200 yard style. Terry Healless, subbing for Richard Mackie, swam in the 'l00 yard butterfly. The Knight swimmers did well in dual competition winning all but one of five matches. The loss came to the eventual conference champions, Madison Memorial. They also did fairly well in the triangular meets placing second in the Janesville Parker and in the meet with Madison East and West. Larger tournaments saw the Knights no higher than third fat the Racine Horlick Invitational and the State tourney sectionalsj. They placed fourth in the Janes- ville Bluebird tournament and the conference meet and a fifth in the Beloit Invitational. This year's state tourney saw many pleasant surprises for Beloit as three men placed in the finals. Tom Saecker, one of the top swimmers in the state, placed first in the 'l00 yard butterfly and third in the 400 yard freestyle. Carl Pantaleo, another top iunior swimmer, placed second in the 'l0O yard backstroke and fifth in the 200 yard freestyle. Tom Piazza also placed ninth in the 50 yard freestyle. Other members of the team were Steve Holcomb, Roger Clay, Steve Tomlin, Mike Swanson, Bob VanOss and Tom Piazza. i isa Carl Pantaleo, Tom Saecker, and Terry Red Healless got set for one of their practice runs. Campton, P. Wilson, J. Behling, C. Page, Row 2: N. Jeffers, S. Tomlin, C. Schroder, R. Zimmerman, Row 3: Coach Pelligrini, R. Stenberg, K. Davis, K. Wilson, T. Hamil. Competing in the toughest cross-country conference that the state has seen in many years was not easy for the Purple Knights. Coach Julius Pelligrini's har- riers faced some of the toughest competition in the country this season. With only one senior on the squad, Roy Straight, the squad was predominantly young. But the teams they faced weren't. All of the conference teams were senior-dominated. The season began on a hopeful note with the defeat of Rockford Harlem. This was followed by an even more satisfying win over Beloit Turner. Then came the intraconference meets and the end of the Knight's winning ways. First, the harriers suffered two disappointingly close defeats to their close rivals, Janesville Parker and Craig. Then, the bottom fell out so the Purple and White faced Madison Memorial, rated one of the top cross-country teams in the nation according to Coach Pelligrini. Leading this powerhouse of runners was Dan Cautley, who was rated number 2 in the na- tion for the mile-run. This devastating loss was followed by another loss to Madison West. The season was climaxed by the Knights' fifth consecutive loss at the hands of Madison East. In the conference meet, Madison Memorial proved strongest of the strong as Beloit finished ninth. Over 1500 people watched the finals of the meet, which is a record for attendence. This year's team was led by sophomore Norm Jeffers who is considered by his coach to be better than any sophomore in the conference. Roy Strait, Dick Zimmerman, Phil Bachelor, Kent Wilson and Phil Wilson made up the remainder of the varsity squad. Mr. Pelligrini looks for improvement next year, with the loss of only one senior. Because most of the other conference teams will lose their stars, Beloit should come up in the standings. T57 sf fi 'ga :Milli i YQ iifililil 1-,-J .
