SENIOR TIME There are occasions when time seems like an eternityg on other occasions time glides by so rapid- ly that we desire to brake it, as in a still picture. We know that all seconds, minutes and hours of time are of the same duration respectively. What is it then, that makes units of time seem longer or shorter? Perhaps it is because all our living time is a series of experiences directly related to the circum- stances encountered. Experiences which are pleasant, enjoyable and rewarding, literally speed time with the fleetest of wings, while experiences which are unpleasant, painful and unsatisfying, make time stand still. In an effort to weave strong fibres of happiness and worth into our short life span, it behooves us to develop that pattern of tastes, values and wholesomeness which will enable us to contribute richly to our fellow men. To live only for ourselves results in miserable selfishness: to live adequately for service to others results in wholesome happiness. We sincerely hope that each of you seniors will develop a sensitivity of discrimination which will enable your series of experiences to be most happy and wholesome. Hold your candle high so that it may light the path of time for those who follow you! C. E. Jones, Superintendent of Schools OLE KVITLE ROYAL B. EVERILL Assistant Principal Principal To the class of 1960: Congratulations to you upon your graduation from high school. The time allotted to you to secure your sec- ondary school education ls all too short to prepare yourselves well to assume adult responsibilities in business and industry, to establish homes, or to enter upon the arduous and demanding studies required ln the pursuit of higher education. Because not all people are able to organize their time and efforts effectively, very special commendatlon ls extended to the many young people in the class who have used these three short years to the fullest extent of which they are capable. They are the students who have carried the heaviest academic loads, earning as many as twenty-two units of credit before graduation. They are the ones who have found time to take advantage of every experience possible in music, the theater, forensics, debate, the student council, journalism, cheerlead- ing, athletics, club-participation, and other activities. They are the boys and girls who, in an already busy schedule, have found time to offer leadership in the many class and club activities, and thus have contributed immeasurably in making our high school an outstanding institution. They are the young men and women who have developed their imagination and their capacity to dream, to envision the many opportunities for service to their peers, to plan and organize their time and effort effectively, and to prepare themselves well for the future. The class of 1960 has many members who in the future will demonstrate these qualities of leadership and service. Royal B. Everlll Ole G. For a student with an eye on his future, there are many future clubsg aspirants in the fields of teachin S. farming, nursing, and commercial work will find congenial groups of like-minded students with whom to dis- cuss their hopes and dreams about the respective fields in which they fxexn might someday find themselves. 5-' 1.4: - In g To those struggling with the infinitives of a foreign tongue, inter- ns as L' 'S est may be stimulated by the joining of one of the four foreign language - C, , t ' . -f s':' q..,-2,551 I ' aai f 7 - , 'Z' clubs - French, German, Spanish, or Lating members of these clubs gain an added knowledge of the mores and customs of the peoples whose languages they are attempting to mas- ter. A Latin devotee may, for instance, don a toga and attend a Roman banquet right in Wisconsin! Many of our people believe in the philosophy that a person is happiest when he is in some way of service or help to others. A lance at o r l b g u c u roster reveals that those so inclined are of- fered variant opportunities to exercise that belief. Those wishing to serve fellow students may join forces with the office irls, l'b l b h g 1 rary c u , ome room bankers or hall monitorsg if they wish to extend their helping hands beyond the boundaries of the school, the Junior Red Cross awaits! Student Council, representing the entire student body, offers many services to the group and provides re- creation through its sponsorship of many dances throughout the year . , w lf? N 1 I 4 lf Q 1 REMARKS Two organizations - THE BELOITER and THE INCRESCENT - offer the 4 J' . . . . . -I , J: student a chance to act in both the areas of service and creativity. As these S-A., , y V f. groups give of their time and effort to produce literary items for their fellow ' 5- El students, they gain in the knowledge of creating and producing. Or, if a ,gn i ZX 1 student feels his creative urge may be better expressed through the medium -sf its 11 Nix 11 V of paint rather than ink, the Art Club extends him a hearty welcome. Girls eager to create via the needle and thread, or pots and pans, may join the Home Economics Club, and Bowling Club for girls offers the chance to learn and participate in a good wholesome sport. The sports-minded of both sexes have the opportunity to exhibit their particular F, as physical prowess in the two intramural organizations. qu . '. Toward the end of the school year, two honor clubs cast eyes about to elect ' V ' Q worthy candidates into their organizations. National Honor Society selects students 3 of high calibre in the areas of scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Quill and Scroll Society is more specifically interested in those who have labored with the pen, but the selectees must be good scholars and citi- zens, too. We hope with the preceding words we have given you a good picture of the clubs and activities offered with- in the walls of Memorial. We would recommend to the present juniors and sophomores that they add interest to their school life by becoming an active participant in some of our organizations f Z 'lfxv l 54,5 sh ss' waits Qazzg-531 1 .. . , I, x J . Mary was adopted by the Student Council through the Fosters Parent's Plan, Inc. , in May, 1959 and since then has been receiving aid from the group. B. Cuthbert has done truly outstanding work in the new system they are using. This year the band is divided into the wind ensemble and concert band. The wind ensemble is made up of the more experienced students so that more difficult and technical music may be played. The concert band is about the same size as the wind ensemble and also does a good job with their material For the concert this year each will play one third of the program and will be combined into a symphonic band to conclude the concert. In putting in a full year crowded with music, marching, leaming, and fun, the band has truly done an outstanding job. Although the Knights won only three ga mes this record was as good as any record in the last five years. The Knights opened the season by beating a very strong Rockford-East team. This broke a twelve game losing streak dating back to the 1957 season. The most satisfying game was the victory over Janesville in the last game ofthe season. The Knights had not defeated this old rival in four years, and the 26-O victory made the team, coaches and fans, very happy. The success of the season was due to a team effort. There were no individuals who were more important to the team effort than any other individual. The attitude and spirit were excellent, and the boys worked together as a unit. The coaching staff believes that with the continuing support of the students and fans and the proper attitude of the players, the Purple Knights will have many more successful seasons. The Knights just cou1dn't seem to get going as the calibre of play one game would be very good and then it would fall down the next game. The Knights, however, played good fourth quarter ball most of the season which just wasn't enough. Unfortunately, Beloit met Monroe, a contender for the State crown, and was defeated in the first. game of the tournament. The Knights bounced back to within a hair of the Sectional consolation honors before dropping a '72-'71 decision to Wisconsin High. Coach Barkin will lose three of his stalwart starters for the 60-61 season but will be looking to Chuch Everill, Art Rhodes, and Norm Johnson for his chief support. In 1959 he was the conference batting leader and the selection for Silver Sluggers. PLAY BALL! A REVIEW OF THE 1959 SEASON BY COACH HARRY POHLMAN . . . Playing with the best infield in the history of Beloit High School baseball, the Purple Knights came within an ace of winning the Big Eight Championship. Beloit spanked Madison Central, the conference winner, 9-3 in the only game in which they met. Schedule peculiarities because of travel and weather problems didn't permit some teams to meet on a home and home basis. In an overall record, Beloit won 11 and dropped 3 games, two games by a single run. Major League baseball scouts trailed Beloit at every game and as many as a half dozen were on hand when Beloit and Madison East played for the top spot. Four batsmen, Jim Merlet, Jim McCauley, Dee Garrett and Mike Pohlman hit over . 400 in the con- ference with Pohlman leading the way with . 452. Dee Garrett, elected M. V.P. , hit .468 in all games played. Mike Pohlman, for the second year, and Jim Merlet were elected co-captains. Pohlman, M. V. P. in 1958, was the Milwaukee Braves Silver Slugger selection to play with the Wisconsin-Michigan All -Stars in Milwaukee in August. Dee Garrett signed a bonus contract with the Chicago Cubs and played with Morristown, Tennessee, during the summer. Third baseman Jim Merlet chose Wisconsin for his future baseball. Mike Pohlman turned back a Milwaukee minor league offer and a Bradley baseball scholarship for an athletic scholarship at Rollins College in Florida. Jerry Taylor, the fourth member of the Knight infield, expects to enter college at the mid-year term. Starting the season by losing a pair of top flight ball players to our neighbors QDoug Grabow to Janes- ville, and Dan Hogan to Clintonj Beloit thrashed Rockford West on April 4, 15-6. Joe Chamberlain in his first high school baseball game drove in five important runs on three singles. Typical of winning teams Beloit turned in a 10 run third inning and clipped off three double plays down south of the border. I PLAY BALLI The next juncture brought in Ted Reimer and Bill Bowers spinning a two hit shut out over Clinton, 24-0. Jerry Taylor and Dee Garrett found the Leeson Park fences to their liking with each belting a three run homer. The conference opener went two extra innings before Mike Pohlman doubled home Dee Garrett with the winning run in a 3-2 cliffhanger, after two were out, to beat Racine Park. Park had scored in the first inning on a pair of errors and a base on balls. The second run came in the fourth on three singles that appeared ready to stand up until Joe Chamberlain delivered a two run tying single, chasing Jerry Taylor who had singled and Phil Plautz who was on second by a double, came home. Beloit handled Janesville easily the first time, in a 8-1 route. Jerry Taylor's two run homer put Be- loit out of reach to finish the scoring. Mike Pohlman with four hits in as many times to bat drove in the first four runs. On a muddy field, John Foster hurled a 7-0 shutout to post the Knights' second win at Racine Park. Mike Pohlman's triple with the walking Garrett aboard, followed by McCauley's single, set up Beloit's margin until a five run seventh inning. The splurge was spearheaded by four well placed bunts that came in for some mishandling. The Purple infield came up for a pair of timely double plays to snuff out Park Threats in the second and sixth innings. Madison West was Beloit's sixth straight victim as they fell 7-4 on another soggy field at Summit. Jim McCauley, having a perfect day at the plate with three hits, rammed home as many runs to lead the Purple. Jim Merlet unloaded a two run triple and was barely out in a home run attempt. Phil Plautz's sacrifice fly scored Joe Chamberlain after his lead off triple in the third. On May 2, Kenosha came to Beloit for their first win of the season to break the Knight's six game winning streak, 8-3. A three run first inning and a three run homer by Jerry Thomas in the second put the Red Devils in a commanding lead before Ted Reimer came in for his taste of Big Eight baseball pitching. Kenosha was helpless after Foster was driven to cover on the Thomas home run. MILWAUKEE COUNTY STADIUM - Scene of the annual Dee Garrett, season batting leader and most valuable All State Silver S1ugger's game where some of Beloit player, 1959. High School's baseball stars have participated. Gerald Menne, Joe Chamberlain, Jim McCauley and Art Palmer are demonstrating an indoor baserunning drill, in preparation for the 1960 Spring Season. PLAY BALLI Playing for first place in the league at Burr Jones Park before a houseful of Big League Scouts, Beloit blasted Madison East 12-4. Jim Merlet cracked out four hits in five times to bat. Jim McCauley and Joe Ch31T1bC1'13iY1 belted h0Tf16 IUHS, and triples were pounded out by Jerry Taylor, Ted Reimer and Dee Garrett. Mike Pohlman drove in four runs on a double and a pair of singles. Jerry Turnquist's three run homer, after Beloit had a 10-0 lead in the fifth, was East's only threat. John Foster struck out ten Purgolders Janesville put on a three run rally after one was out to upset Beloit 7-6 in the final inning. In spite of 12 lusty hits, Beloit failed to put enough of them together to cover up for some poor base running. Ted Reimer had 3 hits, Jim McCauley, Mike Pohlman delivered a lethal triple, scoring Dee Garrett, who had gotten a base on balls, with the winning run to edge Madison East 7-6. The win set up a first place bat- tle with Madison Central. Beloit got only five hits off big Pat Richter, but all were timely. Mike Pohlman and Dee Garrett, each having two hits, paced the Purple Knights. Beloit took over first place in the Big Eight with a showdown game sparked by a chilling nine run sixth inning to stagger Madison Central 9-3. Jerry Taylor's three run homer capped the deluge of runs. Beloit couldn't buy a run prior to the sixth inning blast in spite of eight solid hits up to that time. Central had 3 scattered hits all day off John Foster, but a pair of infield errors set up the Central runs. Jim McCauley had 3 hits off Grauvogl. Mike Pohlman's second double after two were out in the fifth, drove the singling Dee Garrett home with the winning run, in an uphill battle over Racine Horlick 4-3. Phil Plautz had singled home Pohlman and Jim McCauley in the fourth and scored himself as he circled the bases when the left fielder let his drive get between his legs to tie the score in the fourth. Deno Theo's two run homer had set up a 3-0 Horlick lead in the second inning. The Big Eight Championship escaped Beloit when a two um out pop fly was dropped in right field scoring a pair of B. 5 runs, giving Janesville a 2-1 win at Summit. Mike Pohl- f'J' '. x '7 man singled Garrett home with what appeared to be the 'N' winning run until the fifth. Ted Reimer hurled an out- , I standing game, giving up but a pair of outfield hits and . V 4 -ii . an infield hit to the Bluebi ds Q41-if B Q I 'Q 1 f ' .- s ' 1- 1' 7 9, --,f--gg, ' PLAY BA LL! In the final game of the season Dick Johnson got the only hit off Ted Reimer, who was backed up by a pair of double plays in a well played game in which Beloit tipped Racine Horlick 4-1. Jim Merlet smashed a lead off homerun well over the 322 foot mark at the I-lorlick field. A three run fifth inning set up by successive doubles from the bat of Dee Garrett and Mike Pohlman followed by singles by Jim McCauley and Jerry Taylor put Beloit out of reach for the home club. Back for the current season will be Jim McCauley and Phil Plautz who are two letter winners, and Ted Reimer who hurled good ball at the end of the 1959 season along with Joe Chamberlain. Frank Young and Mike Melaas, a pair of right hand pitchers, will be the pivot around possible success of this year's team. A complete new infield will need to be developed from last year's sophomores and juniors. Some ofthe leading candidates will be: Art Palmer, Jerry Menne, Norm Johnson, Bill Bolen, Emerson Creasey, David Hanewall, Dan Hollibush, Rod Jaquish, Bob Rasmussen, and Gary Schoonover. There is a possibil- ity of top flight sophomores diving into the line up if the upperclassmen fail to measure up to expected standards. Pitchers Mike Melaas, Frank Young, and Ted Reimer illustrate pitching grips as catcher Phil Plautz illus- trates the catcher's grip in a preliminary warm-up for the 1960 Season. Candidates for the 1960 tennis team: FIRST ROW: R. Ramsey, C. Everill, A. Hewes, J. Shinkay, P. Phillips. SECOND ROW: A. Rhodes, D. Brown, I. Carroll, S. Whiteford. T R A TENNIS SUMMARY C The racketeers of the 1959 season, coached by Seymour K Provus, ended one of Be1oit's finest seasons - perhaps the best. After a slow start, the team came on with a flashy finish, L copped the Sectionals, and finished fifth in the State meet, an E unprecedented feat for a Beloit High tennis team. T This year the boyant hopes of the tennis squad lie on the T fact that the entire team, with the exception of one player, E will return this year to form the nucleus of a slam-banging, R winning crew. It is the -least understood industry in America.. Yet it is a basic eco- nomic force. It helps the farmer sell his crops. It helps the manu- facturer sell his factory output. It helps the merchant sell his wares. It helps the technician sell his skill. It encourages giant corporations to tool up for mass production by speeding mass consumption. IT IS ES- SENTIAL TO OUR AMERICAN WAY OF LIFE. In short, America is a Better America-thanks to Advertising !
