They accomplished more than any team has since 1977 when the Trojans won the 2A State Championship. The Trojans finished the season with 8 wins, and 4 losses. They were District, Bi-District, and Regional Champions, and Sub-State runner Ups'. The Trojans seemed ready for their first game, but the final score of the game proved otherwise. The Trojans lost 17 to 14 in overtime. From that point on, they went on to beat Belleville while dropping their next game to Sacred Heart. At this point in the season the Trojans switched their offense from the veer to the T, wishbone combination. Clay Center came to Beloit next, and the Torjans showed no mercy, winning 35 to 6. Homecoming was next on the Trojans schedule, and the Smoky Valley Vikings were to be the next victim. The Trojans won their homecoming 28 to 0, and seemed to be on a roll, but the South East of Saline Trojans had everything on their minds, but defeat. They traveled to South East, and added another mark to their loss column. Even though the Trojans were 3-3 heading into District play they kept their heads up. The Ellsworth Bearcats came to Beloit next and were devastated by the Trojans with a score of 35 to 0. The Trojans went on to win their District by defeating a tough Abilene team 14 to 0, and their arch rival, the Concardia Panthers by the score of 21 to 0. The Bi-District contest was held at Chapman. The Trojans were nervous going into the game having only won one game on the road all season that being against the Abilene Cowboys in District play. Inspite of the nervousness, the Trojans pulled off another win 28 to 7, and advanced into Regional play against the 3rd ranked Augusta Orioles. The game was one to be proud of for the Trojans. They fell behind twice in the game, once at halftime, and the other at the beginning of the 4th quarter. The Trojans showed alot of poise, and determination by pulling off the 16 to 14 victory to advance into Sub-State play. There they would face the defending State Champions, the Norton Bluejays. The Trojans got off to a good start taking an early 7 to 0 lead, but from that point on the Trojan offense found that the Norton defense just got stronger and stronger throughout the game. Beloits defense played tough, but couldn’t keep the Bluejays from scoring. The Trojans lost the game 28 to 7, but can be proud of their season. They brought back three returning let-termen, Kristen Amerine, Jennifer Terry, and Denise Daugherty. The Trojans set many goals and made their team motto “Beat ’em and Smile,” which became a very popular motto! The highlight of the year was the win against Smokey Valley, 15-13, 15-6. The Vikings were ranked very high in the state. The Trojans split the matches against Lindsborg with one win for each. Beloit concluded the season with a loss to Concordia at the 4A Sub-state tourney. The Lady Trojans ended their season with a 4-18 record. 63 Lady Trojans Have VARSITY AND JR. The Trojans then participated in the Minneapolis Tournament where they beat Chapman 53-49, lost to Concordia 44-31, and lost a nail biter to Canton-Galva 47-43. The next week Concordia came to town. The Trojans played a terrific game and lost in the last seconds to the state ranked ream 42-40. The Trojans then took a Saturday to make up the game against Southeast that was snowed out. They were bound to win and came out on top 34-33. The Trojans turned right around and played Minneapolis to a close game, they came up short 49-47. The same week they traveled to Smoky Valley and played a great game. The Trojans came up short again in a 34-33 loss. They returned home the next week to play two home games. They lost the first one against Sacred Heart by a close margin 49-48. The second game however, found the ladies out for blood. They won that game against Southeast 53-45. One of the highlights of the year was that four wrestlers placed at state competition, one more than the year before. The Trojans have had a tough year, in which most of the team consists of underclassmen; they were also hampered by the loss of their heavyweight Matt Neiwald, who suffered a fractured elbow, and their 167 pounder, Cory Stelter with a shoulder injury, luckily they had two men to fill those spots after already giving up their 98 pound spot. The Trojans took fifth place in the Class 4A State Tournament, with four placers: Kevin Kadel, 105 lbs., and Paul Gastley, 185 lbs. — 2nd place. Matt Hotter, 145 lbs. and Lynn Kadel, 132 lbs. — 4th place. Two other wrestlers who qualified but did not place were Stephen Gastley and Shannon Peters. The wrestlers final season record was 8-8-1. The Trojans will continue to improve and grow with the younger ones coming up. Over all the wrestlers had a hard but successful year. Troy shows a sharp eye during golf practice. The golf team traveled and competed in eight tournaments plus Regionals this year. Tournament formats are different, ranging from 4 to 6 to 2 man, 4 man, and 6 man formats. The golfers were extremely competitive this year finishing first at Clay Center, Sacred Heart, Minneapolis, and Smith Center. Andy Boettcher was team leader averaging in the 70’s. Shawn Kimberly, Jamie Meier, and Trent Collins rounded out the 4 man team, and played very well throughout the year. Other let-termen who contributed were, Brian Gates, Rob Thummel, Doug Foster, Shane Lynch, and Paul Sheldon. The B-team won the Smith Center B-team meet this year, playing very conventional golf. Shane Lynch won the tournament with an 85. Coach Hiles was very pleased with the team’s performance this year. He said, The seniors worked hard and contributed a good attitude toward working hard, and helping the six younger golfers. He said, All the seniors worked hard and contributed to the team's success this year, and they will be missed.” He ended saying, Hopefully we will perform well at Regionals, and advance to State. It would be a fitting end to a fine year.” 71 Lady Trojans have i Back Row — K. Hilt, K. Baily, S. Donker, K. Brigden, M. Odle, J. Terry, B. Mitchel, A. Bunger, J. Carter. Front Row — K. Amerine, N. The lady Trojans were led by seniors Jaci Kelly, Kris Eilert, and Kristen Amerine. These seniors provided strong leadership for the ladies this season. The ladies were deep in almost all aspects of the team. Being deep is what helped the team in their winning season. 72 Superb Track Season Jennifer Terry reaches back for the baton in the 400m relay. Kristen finishes with agony in her eyes. Becky pulls through the finish line to win the race. Kris Eilert goes over the hurdles with great determination. The 1987 Beloit boys track team ground out a winning season by consistently placing in the top three places or above at every meet. The boys had to rebuild the sprinting aspect of the team due to the loss of strong competitive seniors last year. They were able to rebuild and came out stronger than ever. The five seniors on the team this year are Mike Maxwell, Doug Twaddell, Heath Kolman, Nathan Grabill, and Lance McCune. They provided strong leadership for a successful season. (At the time of this writing, the season was still in progress.) 74 Fought Track Season In the long jump Mike Maxwell completes his best jump of the year. In the discus Scott Boomer placed in the top three places in every meet. Lance McCune gives an extra grunt for some extra force. Doug Twaddell finishes the mile at the Beloit Relays in fine fashion. As a senior, Randy was allowed to participate in an independent study class. The Art and Photo Club members worked hard throughout the year, and projects in all areas of art were rewarded at the eleventh annual Beloit High Art Show in May. Medals, ribbons, certificates, and plaques were presented to Beloit art students for their achievements. In the spring, the group held a picnic to wind up the year. 81 Mr. Elder helps Brett Williams complete his stained glass project. 82 Paul Sheldon the U.S Marla Guirao Paul Sheldon lived at the Dick Stru-ble residence during the 1986-87 school year. Paul really liked Beloit. He said everything is much quieter and different than Cape Town. He said that we drink a lot more pop than they do and use a lot more ice. Like I mentioned before Paul is from Cape Town. South Africa. Cape Town is on the tip of Southern Africa, with temperature of 12 degrees in the winter and 80-85 degrees in the summer. Paul is a sports lover. In Cape Town he plays a lot of soccer, he plays the Goalie position. He also plays squash, a game which is similar to racquetball. Paul likes to golf, too. Paul also plays a lot of water sports, such as water polo. Maria Guirao spent the 1986-87 school year in Beloit with Jim and Margaret Moore as did her sister Carmen before her. Maria is 16 years old and comes from a well-educated family. Her father, Jesus, is a doctor, and her mother, Carmen, is his nurse, making his practice a family business. Maria likes English, literature, and biology. She enjoys dancing, particularly classical ballet. Reading, bicycling, and swimming are her favorite hobbies. Maria said that Beloit was a very nice place to live. She also said it was very different than her hometown which is a province in Southern Spain which houses some 400,000 people. Paul and Maria pose together for a beginning of the year newspaper picture, in Mrs. McDaniel’s room. The club has two main money making projects. They were working in the concession stand at the Beloit Invitational Wrestling Tournament, and the Beloit Relays. The money made went toward the annual athletic banquet. Overall, the B-Club had a great year. 92 The purpose of Future Medical Careers Organization is to build interest and receive experience in medical health professions. Qualifications for the club include an annual $2.00 dues and the students must be interested in a health related profession. Officers for the 1986-87 school year were: Jaci Kelley, president; Kris Eilert, vice-president; and Kurt Carrico, secretary-treasurer. In the fall, the club worked in the football concession stand to raise money for the year. One of the expenses for the year was a suitcase that was purchased for Karen Gormly to take to the International Special Olympics in the spring. Sponsor for the group was School Nurse Sherry Snyder. A casino atmosphere highlighted the evening with former B.H.S. graduates serving the refreshments. Sponsoring the event were parents, faculty, administration, and interested members of the community. Every graduate received a prize or had an opportunity to bid on a prize donated by the community or interested businesses. It is expected that this project will continue at B.H.S. Bonnie Wilson and Sharon Kadel show the souvenior shirt that all graduates received. Lorie Weber and Shonda Cox enjoy some conversation with their dates. Heath and Nathan sign in at the door. Stephanie and Paul look like they are having fun as they stop to pose for a picture. Terri Ackerman helps serve nonalcoholic drinks. Joe Witt, Corey Pohlman, and Marvin Weber, show smiles of enjoyment. Several juniors enjoy the game of blackjack. 124 Project Graduation Cory, Terrance and Mike enjoy playing blackjack. Vaughn. John, and Jill concentrate on their blackjack cards. Barb Meier and former graduate JaLynn Copp watch over the bank. Vaughn Studer a big winner shows us his new black and white television. 125 Index Abell. Kurtis 38. 78. 122 Adams. Laurie 37. 38. 56. 68. 78. 83. 84. 85. 89. 98. 99.122 Ahlvers.
