The 1985 86 Beloit Trojan football team compiled the best record in years: 9-1. The season kicked off with the Trojans defeating the Minneapolis Lions 31 19. After that game, the Trojans could tell that it was going to be a good season. They were strong and had a lot of depth, led by seventeen seniors and nineteen returning lettermen. In their second game, they played the Belleville Buff’s in a downpour and came out on top 7-6. Sacred Heart came to town the following week, to play a game in which Beloit came out on top 13-7. The high flying Trojans went to the home of the number four ranked team in the state, Clay Center, and shut them out 10-0. Battling in the mud against Lindsborg the Trojans came out with the win 34-14. Southeast came to town for the annual Homecoming game. It was a real grudge match in which the Trojans came out on top 32-22. The Trojans then went to Ellsworth to play what was supposed to be one of the hardest games all year. Beloit showed everybody just the opposite and won 42-7. In this game Beloit captured the League title with a record of 7-0. The following week Abilene came to town and played a tough game, but the Trojans came through again and won 28-6. The Trojans then went into Concordia for the final District game.lt looked like it was going to be a long game when Concordia scored early, but the Trojans did not give up. They came back strong and won 56-7. The Trojans then went into Bi-district play against Clay Center. The weather was terrible and the Trojans were haunted by fumbles which resulted in a 21-0 defeat. It was a disappointing loss for the Trojans considering how hard they worked all season long. 63 Eric Widrig turns on the speed. UOLLEYBALLERS GIVE IT THEIR ALL UB Squad First Row T Belden. C Lewis. The Minneapolis Lions ended tourney play for the Trojans with a 15-0, 15-6 box-score. The Trojans then hosted the Eagles of Clifton-Clyde and grasped a seemingly effortless 15-5, 15-7 victory. Beloit took to the road and were again corrupted by the Lions, 5-15, 6-15 and 3-15, 6-15. Concordia took top honors at state this season and Beloit discovered how tough they really were when the Panthers trampled the Lady Trojans to a 2-15, 0-15 defeat. The Bearcats of Ellsworth proved to be as dominating when they traveled to Beloit and stepped over the Trojans. 1-15 and 3-15. The season went from very promising to very disppointing as Lmdsborg and Southeast handed Beloit another pair of defeats with chalk scores of 9-15, 5-15 and 3-15, 8-15 and 16-14, 3-15 and 3-15. 7-15. Beloit finished up the season after taking a 10-15, 6-15 and 8-15, 15-10, 1-15 disadvantage from the Ellsworth team. Beloit ventured to Concordia to play in the toughest 4A sub-state tourney. In addition to the freshmen, the Lady Trojans added a new face to their team this year; coach Jay Rowh. Rowh was the assistant football coach and head track coach for the Beloit Trojans from 1969-1979 and out of those ten years was assistant boys basketball coach for seven years and head basketball coach for two years. Then in 1985 he returned to Beloit to coach the Lady Trojans basketball team. For the five returning seniors. Rowh was the sixth head basketball coach they had in six years, but he repeatedly told them they were the examples and foundation to build on for the coming years. The season opened with a pre-season tournament involving Concordia, Clay Center, Minneapolis and Beloit. The Lady Trojans finished with a fourth place in the tournament. As the season progressed, the Lady Trojans improved as they learned the new offenses and defenses and placed fourth in the Minneapolis tournament out of eight. But the lack of height and low shooting percentage led the Trojans to a 7-14 season record in which a lot of the losses were within two points. The Lady Trojans’ best ball games were against the Smith Center Redmen winning 53-39 and the state ranked Ellsworth Bearcats. Even though they lost to the Bearcats, the Lady Trojans played an excellent three quarters applying a lot of pressure on defense, having few turnovers and enormous hustle until the Bearcats height and 55% shooting from the field led them to a victory. The Trojans ended their season in first round substate play at Abilene against the Abilene Cowgirls. The Lady Trojans worked very hard and made a lot of strides for the future, stated Rowh, a lot was accomplished despite winning only seven games. Foote hustles to stop the dribbler. The Students Against Drunk Driving were once again the largest organization at Beloit Junior-Senior High School with 107 members. Under the leadership of president Kim Nelson, the club undertook the major project of sponsoring a New Years Eve Dance which proved to be highly successful. The club continued to publicize by encouraging students to not drink and drive by featuring guest speakers and showing filmstrips. Other projects taken on by SADD included dances, non-alcoholic parties and drivers for school events. S A D. Officers: Kim Nelson, President; Ronnie Pierce. We were blessed with the presence of Juliette Vroom from Amsterdam and Dennis Urquhart from Paraguay. The club worked several times in the concession stand and met once a month. If anyone is interested in sponsoring an AFS student see Mrs. Sharon Eilert. She also comments that spending time and or sponsoring an AFS student is a great experience. This year the club held a Christmas party for its members and helped Juliette and Dennis call home. Class rings were donated to Juliette and Dennis from Jostins and Griefs. 83 Dr. and Mrs Martin Klenda. Juliette. Kathy and Gretchen. Juliette Vroom is one of this year’s 1985-86 AFS Students. Juliette is from Amsterdam, Holland. Juliette came a family consisting of her mother, and two sisters. She arrived in America August 13th and then in Beloit the 17th. Some changes that Juliette talked about dealt with; big cities to little towns, and wide streets and lots of cars. Juliette made the statement that only a few people in Amsterdam drive, most of them walk or ride bikes. Another difference that Juliette spoke about was the schooling. She went to a 5 year High School. During the day they had two or three breaks. And Seniors only went until 2:00. Her school is only interested in academics. They have a few club meetings, and no extracurricular sports. Juliette is really enjoying her stay here in Beloit. She comments that school is going great. Juliette is rather athletic. She took part in volleyball, basketball, and really enjoys playing softball and sailing. She took a two day trip to Chicago and was fascinated by the tall buildings. The Klenda’s also showed her around Wichita and planned to go to Colorado in March. Juliette will be leaving Beloit the 19th of July. We will always remember her charming smile and the wonderful things she taught us about her country. 84 Juliette portrays the maid and undercover police officer in the fall play. ' Agatha Christie Made Me Do It.” Dennis Urquhart spent the 85 86 school year with the Peter Caldwell family. Dennis comes from Paraguay. His family consists of his parents and three brothers. Dennis said he has enjoyed the stay with the Caldwell family. He especially enjoyed the fishing trips and the basketball games. Some of his other interests include football and hunting. Dennis really has no preference between city or country life. He has experienced both and enjoys both. At his school in Paraguay, he attended school from 7 12 A M or 1 6 P.M. the teachers switched classes instead of the students. When Dennis returns to Paraguay he said he will finish studying, but he doesn’t know what kind of a career he will pursue. 85 Dennis enjoys American technology. 1st Row l-R Brett Williams. The Beloit Chapter has participated in many activities this past year which have helped to improve the chapter. Early in the year the freshmen participated in the Greenhand Conference in Clay Center. The chapter officers went to the State and National Conventions. The chapters money making projects this year were, selling popcorn at all the home football games and they served the annual soup supper at the Beloit Wrestling Invitational Tournament. All this money went to put on the Parent Member banquet at the end of the year. Every year there is an annual speech contest held out at the Vo-Tech, but the Beloit Chapter has never had any member participate in it. This year Annie Bunger took part in the contest and placed third out of twenty-eight. She represented the chapter very well. The club has spent the majority of the year getting organized and forming a constitution, but the clubs underlying goal implies that We can create an interest in the field of social studies and in doing so (students) would take a greater interest in America,” explained Mr. Williams. The History Club featured a local speaker as well as a speaker from Fort Hays State University, Mr. Ronald Fundis, who is an expert on Latin America. An exciting trip to Abilene to visit the Eisenhower Museum and Cowtown enhanced the History Clubs activities. The organization is also involved in the sponsorship of the Citizen Bee contest which is only presently active in five states and is under the direction of Jack Briar. Treas Students Together Are Reaching Success was chosen by the 1985-86 BHS Student Council as their theme. The enthusiasm of the council was headed by Mark Deets — President, Kelly Albert — Vice-President, and Gretchen Klenda — Sec. Treas. To start the year off right student council had their annual potluck supper. This year it was held at Gretchen Klenda’s. The council, after eating, held a meeting to organize the different committees and to gather and compare ideas for the up-coming school year. It was at this meeting that all the members agreed to amend the Student Council Constitution by placing a clause in it that dealt with the cheating situation in the school and to begin a cheating campaign. As the year went by Stuco encountered many ups and downs when they worked to enforce their newly sought campaign. They also came up with the idea of having a Morp Dance.” Since it was Prom spelled backwards, the dance was totally opposite than that of prom. For example: toilet paper decorations, Polaroid pictures, and crazy dress created the scene for the whole event. The first job the council accomplished was decorating the halls to welcome the students for the new school year. Other goals that Stuco achieved were: sponsoring a spirit week, and a homecoming dance after the game. Some other of the annual projects included sponsoring a Mitchell County Dance, having a Stuco exchange and sponsoring another Spirit Week before Belleville Crossroads Basketball Classic and the Beloit Wrestling Invitational. Money-making projects for the year included working in concession stands and selling carnations for Valentines Day. Overall, the year was successful for the members of Student Council. 110 Reaching Success. Mark. Gretchen and Mr Roll conduct the meeting What are you looking at. Mr Hdl?
